#1989 analysis

(don’t mind me i’m rebuilding some posts to organize the best proofs section of the blog 😘)

so it’s very interesting that about a year after dianna and taylor are last seen together taylor releases an album full of songs the reference the tragic end to a love story including a lover with green eyes

but even more interesting is the song wonderland

a song that claims taylor and her lover were too in love to think straight

a song that warns of curiosity

and a song that views the rocky end to a relationship that ended due to outside forces and people’s gossip about them viewed through the lens of alice in wonderland

so i have a little joke i like to make… for a while dianna agron didn’t have a personality she just had alice in wonderland…

from my swiftgron masterpost: Dianna’s favorite book of all time is Alice in Wonderland.  She brought it up in interviews all the time, tweeted about it, auctioned off a signed copy of it for charity, her private Tumblr and instagram account are called whosirmesir which is a reference to it, her private Tumblr is filled with reblogs about Alice, and her public Tumblr was called fell down the rabbit hole.

furthermore aside from the lines about green eyes, curiosity, not being straight there are other lyrics that parallel to swiftgron

“didn’t they tell us don’t rush into things” is a common swiftgron theme and matches with the original lyrics of 22 “sometimes it hits me we’re moving quickly” and we know dianna was the muse for that song

“didn’t it all seem new and exciting” matches the note dianna wrote for taylor right after they hung out for the first time about her open heart:

Also Dianna went to Morocco right after swiftgron ended (we think) so that matches the “you searched the world” lyric.

Dianna got her Alice in Wonderland (among other things) tattoo removed (starting sometime in 2015 or 2016 perhaps) and acted like a complete freak about it bringing up the removal unprompted in 2019

143 is a code taken from mister rogers that means I (1) Love (4) You (3).  Mister Rogers thought this was such a lovely sentiment that he even kept his weight at 143 pounds for much of his life.

143/Mister Rogers is a Taylor Thing.  She made the Lover track 3:41 in length just because it’s a code that means “I love you.”

But I think 143 is a Swiftgron Thing as well (no I don’t think Lover is about Dianna that’s why it’s also just a Taylor Thing.)  The day after the infamous Kaylor Vogue Spread came out, you know the one:

Taylor added 5-6 seconds of silence to the end of Clean to make it 4:31 in length.  

I have checked youtube, apple, and spotify.  It’s not a glitch it’s across all platforms and here’s a receipt:

I checked with a friend who’s familiar with the music industry and typically songs have a standard 2-3 second pause between tracks to allow the listener to realize a new song is starting.  If it’s any longer than that it’s either an amateur mixer working on the album (so we know it’s not due to this because Taylor only works with the best of the business when it comes to working on her albums) OR it’s done intentionally.  It can be intentional to allow the listener to sit with the music a bit longer before starting the next track but in the case of Clean it’s the last track on the album.

Taylor intentionally made the timestamp on Clean a secret 143.  And if she wanted to easter egg in the timestamps she could have made the song 4:30 in length, which is Dianna’s birthday.

She didn’t.

On their final break up song, the one where she declared herself Clean, on an entire album dedicated to their break up, she had the last thing she said to her be “I love you.”

Yeah yeah I know Kimby Kloss liked a tweet that said it was a Kaylor song but Kimby Kloss is dumb.  She likes just about everything that is @ed to her including this Alice in Wonderland tweet which proves she is actually a Swiftgron shipper:

so i think we can all conclude that Kimby is just a dumbass with a social media account(much like the person that runs this tumblr) and not some brilliant social media mastermind hiding secret truths in her social media posts.  she just likes stuff that people tag her in, it’s not that deep, and if we read TOO far into her social media activity then we can conclude she’s fucking besties with ivanka trump.

Let’s set all that aside.

I know I know places was recorded in january 2014 but i think there’s a very good chance she had written it well before the recording session.  Here’s what she said on the voice memo for the song:

“I sent this voice memo to Ryan Tedder because I'd always wanted to work with him, and finally we scheduled some studio time. So I always wanna be prepared. I wanted to send him the idea that I was working on before we went into the studio just in case he wrote back and said "I can't stand that, I wanna work on something else, think of something else". “

So we know she had the first draft of this song before January 22nd when she recorded the final version of the song.

Furthermore we know Taylor was still processing her relationship with Dianna through all of early 2014.  She wrote Style and Clean about Dianna in February 2014 and we know she was trolling the Glee set sometime in early 2014 still looking for her.

I don’t think anything serious happened with Karlie until March 2014 (”something happened for the first time in the darkest little paradise...trip of my life!...now i’m your daisy”) on the Big Sur trip.

When Taylor explains the song she likens it to Out Of The Woods which we know is about Dianna:

Furthermore Taylor easter egged the “they are the hunters we are the foxes” lyric when she went out with Harry in late 2012 with her fox shirt.  I think she had already written that line and wanted it to be tied back to him (the same way she had “your necklace hanging from my neck” tied back to him, along with dozens of other eggs Taylor is infamous for planting):

If that line was conceived in 2012 then the song is undoubtedly about Dianna (or you know, Harry, if you’re an insane hetlor that still enjoys this blog.)

In the Taylor Swift Cinematic Universe, Dianna canonically has Green eyes.  They are mentioned in Everything Has Changed, and of course the most Dianna song in the history of all music, Wonderland.  

I don’t know what eye color Karlie is supposed to have but if you think Gorgeous and Delicate are about her then Taylor sees them as blue.  

I Know Places is actually very similar, thematically to Wonderland.  They’re both songs that make heavy mention of other people’s take on a relationship.  

i think these songs are about the same person (duh) - cbbh wishing someone would come back at the dawn of a relationship and iwyw being about wanting someone to come back in the dusk of a relationship.  we all already think that but i’m just trying to explore the two songs and maybe we’ll see something we didn’t before.

the crux of this analysis is simply that “come back be here” is the same sentiment as “i wish you would come back”.  the same thing is requested in both songs.

the opening lines of the songs mentin an early time in the AM:

You said it in a simple way 4 AM, the second day

vs.

It's 2 AM in your car

there’s mentions of modes of transportation that the object of affection is in - cbbh has a plane, iwyw has a car, i don’t think it’s necessarily intentional but it makes a nice metaphor for the soaring emotions you feel at the beginning of a relationship plus we know they rushed into things thanks to previous explorations of themes, and then we know for the LA Lover/1989 muse cars were always a big thing they were driving together everywhere (which it doesn’t exactly seem like she’d be doing with Harry since he was visiting LA every time he went - he likely didn’t have his own car there)

while come back... be here seems to be more about the anxiety of being seperated from a new love interest, iwyw seems to be about the depression of being seperated from an old love interest - cbbh mentions the second day, the delicate beginning rush, and falling in love and i wish you would mentions memories and the past.

we talked about it on the bonus pod but essentially to me (and cara who really pioneered this theory) there’s a slew of references to other 1989 songs but it seems like she’s imagining the what a relationship with the 1989 muse (dianna) might be like if they could be in public

here’s some parallels and supporting evidence:

Small talk, he drives Coffee at midnight, the light reflects

i don’t think it’s any mistake she is singing to a “you” and a “he” because i think she knew the one thing that made it so she and dianna couldn’t be public together and in the end couldn’t work out, so the song isn’t about dianna but i think it’s taylor reflecting on a public relationship, less complicated than the one she had with dianna, due to picturing it as a het pairing

which makes it seem like some accident did happen and it wasn’t just a het plant reference to the harry snowmobile accident… tbh this reads a bit like the tone of the reputation prologue to me, where she’s saying that the media won’t know about it and will speculate about the wrong things…

  plus, the question leading into this addresses her clear anxiety in the relationship with the 1989 muse:

and taylor saying that people won’t know about “major and traumatic” events in her life makes me think of 1989’s “silent screams” and “screamed so loud but no one heard a thing” themes and how she has to mourn this relationship quietly since no one knows about it :(
