The Last Man by Mary Shelley was first published in the UK on 23 January 1826 (bootlegged editions appeared in the US around 1833).
Shelley had stopped writing in 1822 after her miscarriage and death of her husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley (who drowned at the age of 29), but began working on The Last Man after seeing a stage production of her 1818 novel Frankenstein in August 1823.
The novel deals with society in the late 21st century, after humanity has nearly been wiped out by a plague. Now considered one of the first "dystopian" novels, The Last Man received harsh criticism when it was published, with critics calling it "sickening" and "diseased." It quickly went out of print and was not rediscovered until the 1960s and has been called Shelley's "second great work of science fiction."
