Do You Like This Character's Visual Design?

A polling blog focused on whether or not you (specifically) like the VISUAL design of a character.

Polls will be posted five times a day between 18:00 and 18:12 BST (UTC+1) (subject to change & barring extenuating circumstances), and will last one week. Results happen when they happen, usually somewhat weekly (I'm a busy woman).

Submissions open on the first of every month, with 150/155 slots being available. These will be posted from the 1st to the end of the following month. A link to the google form to submit designs will be posted when submissions open.

That's all extremely sweet of you to say, thank you. For the time being, I'd like to keep anon asks on. I know how daunting it can be to ask even the simplest of questions at times, especially when you're young or neurodiverse, and I'd rather leave them on to alleviate some of that stress for people. I love interacting with this little community, and I want to make it as easy as possible for that to happen. If it becomes too much of a problem though, the option to turn them off is always there. I really appreciate your concern about my wellbeing, I'm very, very lucky to have people like you looking out for me :-]

I have little pet theories here and there about why I get sent such lovely things as these fairly frequently (archived from being sent to my friends out of bewilderment).

and the main one is that I have the audacity to be vocally against fatphobia, orientalism, racism (and whatever else I've talked about on this blog) while having she/her pronouns. A lot of what gets sent my way tends to be very misogynistic in nature, and I don't think it's much of a coincidence.

All of this accounts for two of my big personal rules for running the blog, I don't talk about designs I dislike unprompted, and I try my best to remain neutral on topics unless they are brought directly to my attention as not to provoke the kinds of people who seem to dislike me on principle. It's the internet, it's going to happen if you have any kind of audience, I'm honestly surprised it doesn't happen more (though that could just be me being cynical, I've been on tumblr since the early 2010s and remember just how vile the website can and has been.

The vast, vast majority of my interactions as the admin of this blog are wonderful, sincerely delightful, and I truly value the opinions of everyone who engages with the blog in any way - I just worry sometimes that all of this is taking a bit of a toll on me. I've had thoughts about ending the blog before due to how strong some people's parasocial hatred of me seems to be, I really don't want to lose the love I have for this silly little project of mine but it really does get to a point.

I try my best to answer every ask I get in a somewhat timely manner, hence why the earlier one about sexualisation got published despite my issues with it, because I try my best to assume good intentions, but I don't like publicising this kind of harassment -it's just not fair to all of you to have to see that. I'm reluctant to even talk about it like this, I know this kind of attention is what they'd want and the admission that all of this gets to me isn't exactly a good one to be making, but I'd rather be upfront than dance around it like I have been for the past few months.

This is all a little long winded, but if the person or persons responsible for this are reading; please do something better with your time than this.

the sexualization includes problematic elements (common in orientalist designs but even outside of them...)

or C. i dislike thigh windows. I don't think i've seen an appealing version of it. (ig the closest would be some of the zzz designs?). i just find them really dumb.

there's also D. where the sexualization makes the design over complicated in a hard to read way (but usually those hit one of the other 3 anyways)

Hi anon, as much as I enjoy hearing people's thoughts, I think a reminder that you do not know me and this is a little weird to send to a stranger would be beneficial here. I agree somewhat with the sentiment at play, I've spoken in the past about how arousal is a morally neutral act and how finding a design attractive does not mean that it is wrong or lesser, or that you are wrong or lesser for enjoying it, but I don't quite appreciate how you are delivering that message.

I take umbrage with a few things here -- framing straight men as inherently perverse does a disservice both to yourself when using them to put yourself down, and to members of the LGBT+ community (such as transgender, heterosexual men for instance) or racialised men (who have their sexuality weaponised against them in ways that do not often happen to white men). It also reinforces some fairly nasty bioessentialist ideas, namely that there's an inherent trait to men that leads to them being unable to control themselves or their morals when aroused. Additionally, although I'm glad you're aware of your sexuality and preferences, I think there were better ways to say 'I find these designs sexually appealing' without telling me, directly, that you really like boobs. Boundaries, please.

The mechanisms behind why these designs get created are interesting to explore, and I'm happy to hear that you're willing to engage with those issues when making your choice on how to vote, I do sincerely think that the discussion surrounding sexualisation in character design and what that says about creator, consumer, and culture at large is an important one to have. Likewise, I think it's important to remind ourselves that sexuality is something that the majority of people experience (not all of us, of course, my love and acknowledgement to those upon the asexual spectrum) and the shame that surrounds it is not good for our wellbeing nor our relationships with our bodies and our desires. The sanitisation of the internet and media in general is something that ought to be pushed back against, I've said this before and I do stand by it.

There’s also a slight difference it seems, simple male designs sometimes get mostly no but simple female designs almost always get mostly yes (which, you know what I can get that, we’ve had enough popular plain men in media let’s get some plain women!)

This sounds hatery. It isn’t meant that way. I just think it’s interesting to see how my opinion differs from the majority on this stuff

I admit, I'm not the most informed on this topic but there is a video I recall watching a few years ago that really outlined some of the issues with his design work from a technical level. I haven't rewatched it in a while so forgive me if it isn't 100% perfect, but I've linked it below if you're interested in hearing more on the topic :-]

"You know what's worse than giving no information with a character design? Giving INCORRECT information. Fire Emblem games have a lot of royals. This one has ~8, even more if we count the non-playable ones…guess who's not one of them? Yeah. This girl, who has the most princess-coded design I've ever seen with a freakin tiara to boot, is not a princess. She's a retainer, for Alfred instead of Celine, so she doesn't even match her lord's outfit."

"I really really like how they did her hair. Cookie run designs can get really far from their supposed food influences but I like that she's really readable as those long gummy candies"

Elise von Klagen from XBlaze: Code Embryo

"Elise is certainly quite a gal. Aside being Kuon's best friend, Elise also has a one sided and obsessive love toward Kuon (which is unfortunate for her as Kuon doesn't swing that way), yet despite her small creen time in Code Embryo, she works as another comic relief and even when she leaves, proves to be of great help to the heroes thanks to her hacking abilities and her gifted silver tongue. Thankfully, the sequel Lost Memories gives Elise more screen time, even having her participate in battles thanks to her Ward and Defense magic. === An observer sent by the Magic Guild. She is, at first glance, very earnest, and a hard worker. Kuon's roommate back in Ishana, Elise has very strong feelings for Kuon and will stop at nothing to be with her. She is also the one person that truly understands Kuon and what she's going through."

Impressive indeed! It's very easy to offend people's sensibilities, to be provocative through stereotype or through caricature, but it's far harder to make something that's inoffensive and bad, that makes it to the production stage of something like a fully animated show.

This is going to be a huge tangent but I'm taking this opportunity to talk about Butch Hartman as a character designer. I find it important to point out that the level of terrible that Becky's design achieves is hardly unique in its awfulness within Butch Hartman's portfolio of character designs. One thing that has become a lot more well known in art circles (to the point that I, who has never watched a single episode of anything he has been involved in, am aware of it) is that the design work on Danny Phantom (a show that is typically praised for its striking visuals and character design) was largely the brainchild of Stephen Silver - if you're interested in seeing what the designs would look like had he been allowed more creative control, I would point you towards a video he made in 2016, linked below.

Yes, these examples are a little old now, and I admit that I haven't checked in on him at all in the last few years (no reason to, to be frank, outside of all of this he's a thoroughly unpleasant, vocal bigot who deserves to be ignored), but you would think that someone as large within the industry as him would be embarrassed to put designs this over-designed, messy and poorly conceived into the public eye. His work on Danny Phantom and Fairly OddParents, regardless of how much of it was actually his, gave him the influence to get a design like Becky's onto air (though how much of it was him and how much was Ernie Gilbert's work, I can't say without doing more research into this).
