Hi, Jess! Uuuuggh the members of earthshot's council feel very... amateurish. I couldn't even be happy that a brazilian is among them. I really don't wanna sound elitist, but I was actually expecting high profile scientists, or, at least, "just" scientists. My country has AMAZING scientists, who are a reference in their respective areas. Miguel Nicolelis was featured on scientific american's top20 scientists in his area. Earthshop is not even in his domain, but I bet he'd be more qualified [1/2]
[2/2] than most. I really don't know if these famous people chosen to be part of the council will actually be able to understand the intricacies of the projects, all the complexities you've already discoursed. (Don't even get me started on rania...)Ā (Hi, I'm back haha) Also, I know this is way too ambitious, but there are also many world-famous native american leaders in brazil who've been fighting for the environment for MUCH longer than most people. Having them on the project would've been amazing (although I know sth like this would be incredibly unlikely to happen)
Hello my dear :) I know what you mean about not wanting to sound elitist but I agree. There are some people on there who are excellent choices but I feel like the celebrities are weird options. People have said itās ok because they will be advised by experts but in that case I donāt see why you donāt just have the experts on the council. I think they were chosen for their reach whichĀ I understand but if they really had to have celebrities I donāt see why they couldnāt have saved the council slots for celebrities who have a track record with the environment. I know sheās busy being pregnant but Bindi Irwin did narration for one of the documentaries and someone like her could have been perfect. Sheās Australian and she is beloved across the world but she is also well known for conservation work and is a young person. Thatās another thing, for all the talk of the youth quake and the youth leading the movement they arenāt represented on the Council (the youngest member is 36).Ā
Theyāve said there will be more additions later so Iām hopeful that they went with a set of people who could raise the profile first and then later down the line will include more people who are qualified. And I think you raise a great point about indigenous leaders in Brazil. Brazil should in many ways be the country at the forefront of the conversation given the importance of the Amazon and we know that indigenous communities are the most knowledgable about protecting it so to my mind someone who fits that brief should have been first on the list. They seem to know the importance of community leaders and activists from countries at the forefront of climate change - their choices for African representatives reflect that and William spoke very eloquently on it in the documentary - so I can only hope theyāll be chosen later down the lineĀ
