A/N: Request: so I was thinking what if he met a woman who was strong and sassy and also into *cough cough* gardening *cough* and he just melts for her but she’s a hard to get maybe cos they’re rivals and she has a reputation to uphold being a strong independent woman ??? Maybe some smut with them giving into the attraction ??

Why I Love It: Uh, ya'll already know THAT I AM DOWNBAD FOR RAFA.

When I first took notice of Tenoch Huerta, I had no idea his most famous role before Namor was portraying an infamous drug dealer in a Narcos TV spin-off. I never watched that show (still haven’t) but I am so hyper fixated on Tenoch, I did watch all of his scenes on YouTube and salivated over every gif I came across on Tumblr. I lamented here in a post one day that I hadn’t been able to find any fic for the character, and was pointed to this gem.

Rafa the character is fascinating to me – as problematic as I know people may find the distinction fans want to make to separate their regard from the real criminal depicted by Tenoch in the series. It’s something I still question. I don’t care too much for film, TV or media around drugs and crime. My family loves Scarface, I despise it. People will recommend the Godfather, I have never, nor will I ever watch it (some in the industry insist I study it if I want to write movies, but I still refuse). No different with Narcos. So why do I like the “character”? Why am I drawn to him; curious? Why am I attracted?

Tenoch, plain and simple. I have no other way to articulate that thought, as it is shallow: I like the way Tenoch looks and speaks and characterizes Rafa, no deeper than that.

This story, a one-shot, the first I’ve read featuring him, is a Reader and it’s the perfect way to edge into a full blown hyperfixation. It’s my first in the realm of Tenoch’s other roles outside of Namor. It’s well paced, well plotted, well characterized, not too long or bitter, but rather sweet. I find that of the handful of fics I’ve read featuring Rafa, they are mostly tragedies. This one is not. It’s an easy narrative to be swept away by. I am not Afro Latina, or Mexican, and I don’t smoke weed, but I had no trouble reading this as I would “watch” an episode of the TV show, despite it being a “Reader” fic. And since I will probably never actually watch that show, this is good for me.

This is the first fic I read from the author. If you are intrigued by Rafa, here is a way for you to feed your curiosity that doesn’t require payment in angst.

When he meets Shuri, he changes the terms to give Wakanda everything they want — in exchange for Shuri's hand in marriage. While Ramonda refuses to even consider, Shuri can't help but be as drawn to Namor as he is to her. And the choices she makes will shape both their kingdoms in the time to come . . .

Why I Love It: So, there are always going to be the Hades/Persephone fics with a pairing like this. It’s just par for the course. 

What I love about this is that Shuri not only has agency/autonomy, she is level headed and practices diplomacy, and she is full of wonder and joy. Her mother is still alive, so she is not bitter with hatred towards Namor. She is still the curious, nerdy, charming young woman that is eager to explore a new world. Namor does not push, this is not dubious consent. Nor does he manipulate. He is just as awed and curious and charmed by her as she is of him. And he is honest, as he is wont to be. The union is natural, though there are obstacles.

Ramonda, in conjunction, is not written as a mean-spirited villain here (as she has been in a few Nashuri’s I’ve attempted to read), just a concerned and still grieving mother. What would you do if a 500 year old blood thirsty God asked you for your only remaining and youngest child’s hand in marriage? Shuri patiently, and respectfully reasons with her mother, asking for her independence and gaining it on her own terms. Shuri does this while acknowledging her mother's grief and anxiety around losing yet another child. And to the depth of the sea no less. And because of this, Ramonda comes to recognize her daughter as a woman with her own right to choose as she pleases, though it pains her. Reluctantly, albeit. But it's there. A mutual understanding and respect for one another.

The story is ongoing, but the writer proves that the union between Namor and Shuri is a good one, and strong. That it was the right thing to do. It has its obstacles, of course, a good drama needs conflict, but they are not no-win scenarios. And if the characters miscommunicate at times, they always find their way to the truth and express it with love and trust (so far). I would call this writing a healthy depiction of what Nashuri could look like outside of canon.

Why I Love It: One of things I absolutely adore about Attoye fic writers is how inventive they are with the pairing. Alternate Universe fics are honestly, some of my favorite type of fiction because it usually relies more on the writer's own world building, outside of the foundation the original creators of the IP laid for the story and characters. 

This took me by surprise. People tend to have an aversion for things they may deem to be “out of character” for incarnations that already exist within an established canon. This for me, is simply another fantasy. The point of fanfiction (IMO) is ultimately to pull apart, examine and experiment with what’s already there, then create something else entirely, if you’re that bold.

This is bold, brash, sexy, and entertaining! It’s an experiment, it’s a new mold and shape for these beloved characters. I enjoyed this very much.

This is the first fic I read from the author. Do yourself a favor and read it. Get out of your comfort zone!

Why I Love It: I often discover things like this late at night when I can’t sleep and I can’t stop fantasizing. This was a welcome relief to pass the time I spent in insomnia some nights ago.

I ate the whole thing up in a couple of hours read time. It’s one of the most mature explorations of this dynamic between film canon Shuri and Namor as they exist after the events of BPWF. While everyone can reasonably acknowledge that in real life, the idea of falling in love with the person who took the life of your mother is not rationally justifiable, those of us who can see a way for fictional characters to come around to it do appreciate the sensible approach.

You can ignore the un-sensible and suspend disbelief in most cases, but when you are presented with something that comes close to making sense in the world of fiction, it leaves room for unburdened enjoyment. This story does that. It unburdens the reader the same way it unburdens Shuri. Nothing is gone. Grief, sadness, anger, disgust – it’s all there. But as a human tends to do with lesser stakes in real life, so does a well-written character do with more dramatic stakes in a narrative. So does Shuri here. She connects, she learns, she grows. Namor is a calculating God, who gives Shuri what she wants under the guise of manipulation, but if you read between the lines drawn here, the author is actually telegraphing the nature of his true feelings and motivations for yielding to Shuri in more ways than just in the ways of war and diplomacy. He loves her, and will make himself weak in the eyes of his people for her, understanding that together they will be stronger. I would classify this as a slow burn, not in the traditional way you may think.

It’s calm, it’s introspective, it’s thorough, it takes itself seriously in how it handles the subject, but it knows what it is: fictional, hypothetical, fantastical. The characters have arcs you can track. Give it a chance, go on the journey. Follow the author’s updates here on Tumblr.

Why I Love It: One of things I absolutely adore about Attoye fic writers is how inventive they are with the pairing. "Normal" Alternate Universe fics are honestly, some of my favorite type of fiction because it usually relies more on the writer's own world building, outside of the foundation the original creators of the IP laid for the story and characters. One of my favorite types of OTP AUs is “stripper fantasy”. I am a “Player’s Club” type chic, deep down (though I believe this was actually inspired by the P-Valley series). And while we don’t get into any real toxicity here (as you will find in that particular film), what you do get is the flavor of hood girl making money, and her man chasing after her and protecting her from fuckboys, bad customers, and the Madame’s (Ramonda) wrath.

This is the first set of fics I’ve read from the author. It’s sexy, sweet, domestic, funny and there are already three parts to the series. Hopefully there will be more, but do yourself a favor and read these.

LOL. i finally fleshed it out and decided it would be a fic. am i publishing this while i have one pending fic that is not even halfway finished? yes. definitely. will i be able to update both? yes, duh. it might take long though. but anyway, i hope you like this! it's been in my mind ever since i wrote that thread, and it's making me go crazy LOL. i hope you like it!

Why I Love It: It’s Quantum Leap in a Nashuri fic! No, but seriously I know people have issues with the prominence of multiverse-centric storytelling in major media right now, the argument can be made that there is an oversaturation, and the execution has been somewhat clumsy. But this is fanfiction. And when fic writers get a hold of endless possibilities, that is where they have the most fun IMO. Multiverse exploration is ripe for that.

So when we have a character as stalwart and immoveable as Namor, finding himself thrown into the unknown time and again, being confronted with the many dispirate yet marginally familiar versions of his (yes his) Princess Shuri that the original version encompasses as a whole, why it’s enough to drive a God King mad.

As it is, this is whimsical, fun, amusing, and thrilling. It keeps you leaned in and on the edge of it, but not in a way that makes you want to tear your hair out. It’s a fish out of water story. A somewhat irreverent comedy, with highkey romantic undertones. Well balanced. A few non-BP characters appear – America Chavez and Doctor Strange – but they aren’t annoying and serve critical purpose to the plot.

I highly recommend for its dark rom-com tone and multiversal hijenx. Plus a disoriented, sulky, broody, lovesick Namor is always a treat.

Dean's girl is a handful and he wouldn't have it any other way.
