can i ask for writing tips? i wanna know how to write without cringing at myselfđ everything i write feels bad and i hate feeling every emotion secondhand just from writing itâŠ.is that something i just have to get over or is writing just not for me then
ahhh this is a phase, i can attest to this hahaha. i can provide you with some tips and reassurance!
writing tips for the cringe phase:
while in this phase, nothing sounds natural and everything feels cringey and forced
but to overcome that, ask yourself: why do you feel this way?
if your answer is "it just feels weird," then switch to another idea and start writing for it - maybe you just aren't ready for the current subject matter
if your answer is "the writing just feels bad," then this is when you head back to the research/learning phase. check out books, other fanfics, other sources of writing or video tips. what did you like about other writing? what types of phrasing or flow made you feel good while reading? try to go off those thoughts and try again on a new doc.
expanding on the above: do you prefer long sentences versus short? do you like long paragraphs or quicker line breaks? do you tell more than show ("Her saying that really hurt." or "Her words cut right through my lungs.") if you start to express yourself in a wider range of ways, that can help instead of literally writing every single emotion.
if your answer is "i hate it and it sucks," DO NOT DELETE. please please please just step away and then come back to it the next day. whenever i work on something and think "this is... not good." i still keep it, take a day, work on something else, and come back later. reading it over with fresh eyes makes you either realize "oh this actually wasn't bad and i was in my head" or "yeah we will move this to the scrap pile." either way, don't delete entire sections out of frustration. they could help later on, or even fit into another story.
you're writing from your heart. none of it should truly be cringe because it's how you feel, and you are the one creating it! not someone else, not a machine, but your brain and your two hands. that's saying something.
try to give yourself grace. write what makes you happy and write because you want to. and if it's cringe?
EMBRACE THE CRINGE! write that ridiculous idea, laugh at yourself for even thinking of it and writing it down, shake your head at how you even do these things. but remember that it's all art, and it's yours.
you're doing great, and the fact that you reached out for help means something. try again, and if it makes you feel icky and cringey even after all this, then at least you made multiple attempts.
