Why did John lie about the secret of Lyctorhood? I think Augustine says that Alecto had yellow eyes from the first time he saw her - John knew how to do it perfectly before any of the others ascended. John doesn’t have the best grasp on morality and remorse, but he does seem to care about people in at least a superficial way - why would he intentionally let people he supposedly called friends die, knowing the whole time that the sacrifice was unnecessary? If he‘d cracked the secret to perfect Lyctorhood after the first saints ascended, it would still be terrible, but it would make a bit more sense as a guilty secret that he didn’t want to share out of some misplaced fear of making the new Lyctors’ grief worse. But he knew the whole time. Why? Just to have people he could more easily control?
