From what I've found Luis, one of Maximo's idols in racing, recognized Maximo's talent very early in his career and began training with him.

Although I'm not sure if it's on purpose or not, I've also noticed that Maximo's racing colors match Luis', especially with the pink that he uses even before joining aspar. Maximo's number is also a digit lower in each place than Luis' 39 -> 28.
