Character who regularly exercises/has to do a lot of physical activity waking up feeling stiff and sore, assuming that yesterday was just a little tougher than usual on their body. They roll right into their usual daily routine and push past it, as they have obviously needed to do in the past.
The whole day they feel worse and worse slowly, and by the time they realize they’re sick and feverish, they’re really feeling sick.
Thinking now about a whumpee who neglects to tell Caretaker about certain (preferably more serious) details of their condition -- not because they're deliberately trying to make themselves seem like they aren't as bad off as they are, but because they're so out of it they literally just forgot:
"Wait, you have the flu and your heat has been out this whole time?" "...didn't I mention that part earlier?" "You most certainly did not."
"Sorry 'm lagging. It's hard with my leg..." "...what about your leg???"
Whumpee who is found Incredibly feverish by their friends and in their delirious state just assumes they'll realize or else somehow know their ailment stems from an infected wound, only for their friends to be horrified when they learn this detail way too late having very much not put two and two together
Etc.
Sick Whumpee Prompts (Cold/Flu)
Stumbling because they’re lightheaded
Shivering/wrapped in a blanket/hugging a heat pack
Burning up/sweating/taking a cold shower
Drinking tea/hot chocolate
Eating soup
Curling up on the bathroom floor
Drinking ginger ale/eating soda crackers to calm their stomach
Panting because their chest/nose is congested
Puffy red eyes
Painful and persistent cough
Throbbing headache
Swigging cough syrup out of the bottle to get through the day
Stomach cramps
General confusion/inability to focus
Fever dreams/floating in and out of restless sleep
They’re relatively compliant cause they have very little energy
They’re 100% exhausted constantly
Aches and pains throughout the body
Pale, clammy skin
I don't think I've seen anyone mention this but, when you sleep a total of fifteen hours with a fever then you sort of lose your balance after such a long time. Imagine Whumpee is finally out of their fever but when they try to get up, their knees just buckle.
More waking up prompts
(based on this post)
Chilly and uncomfortable in a hospital bed, gown and sheets scratchy against sensitive skin, somewhat overwhelmed by the amount of tubes in their arms
After being sure they would bleed to death, wracked with pain and groggy, continuing to slip in and out as they struggle to pull themselves to safety, hands slipping in their own blood
To a damp washcloth being pressed to their forehead, trying in vain to blink away a haziness that won't relent
In the snow, shivering harder than they ever have before and unsure of how they got there
Somewhere warm and soft, too tired to fully open their eyes but dimly aware that they're safe now
In their own bed far later than when they usually wake up, mouth dry and head aching, remembering feeling unwell the day before but unable to put together how they ended up in bed

Waking Up Scenarios
Concrete Cold — eyes open to the sting of gravel pressed into their cheek, dried blood sticking their skin to the ground. Every muscle aches when they try to move.
Fogged and Bound — awareness trickles back with a burning neck, wrists cinched tight, fighting for vision as they realise they can’t move.
Hands First — they wake to someone slapping lightly at their face, murmuring “hey, come on, stay with me” — blurred voices and panic before the world comes back into play.
Public Humiliation — wake flat on their back in the middle of a crowd, strangers staring down, some filming, none helping fast enough.
Too Bright — harsh light floods in the second they pry their eyes open, head pounding, body strapped to a metal table.
Caretaker’s Lap — they stir to the feeling of a shirt under their cheek, arms around them, someone whispering: “easy, you’re safe, I’ve got you.”
Alone and Exposed — waking in an alley, shirt damp, ribs aching, with no memory of how they got there or why their hands won’t stop shaking.
Dragged Back — half-conscious, they wake only enough to realize they’re being carried, boots scraping the floor, head limp against a stranger’s chest.
Fever-Slick — waking mid-sickness, drenched in sweat, mumbling nonsense, too weak to push the blanket away.
Interrupted Nightmare — they jolt awake with a cry, not realizing the screams were theirs, throat raw, body fighting before hands pin them gently down.
Pinned by Weight — stirring only to feel a boot or a knee across their chest, air still cut off, the fight not finished after all.
Labored Return — they come to gasping, chest heavy, heartbeat wrong, every inhale clawing its way through cracked ribs or bruised lungs.
Disoriented — first thought: where am I? Second: why can’t I move? Third: oh fuck, someone’s watching me.
you are never alone in your pain because there is always The Character
Whumpee leant against the train wall, eyes closed and back curved in a weak hunch as he struggled to stay upright. Each jolt and turn along the tracks took another breath of strength from their legs, inching them nearer and nearer to the floor. Their clammy hand struggled against the smooth metal of the stanchion. If a seat didn't become available soon, they were going to end up face to face with the evening commuters' boots.
"Hey," Caretaker said, squeezing through the aisle to Whumpee's corner. Whumpee blinked slowly. Caretaker's face blurred and distorted in their vision. The train swam. They closed their eyes again and tried to focus on breathing, but could only find nausea and a tight pit in their chest.
In for four, hold for seven, out for eight.
In for four, hold for seven, out for eight.
You're okay, just stay upright. In for four—
"Whumpee? Can you hear me?" Caretaker asked. Whumpee wanted to answer, but the words got stuck like bile in their throat. Their jaw felt too heavy to open, their lips too heavy to part. The best they could manage was a dizzying flicker of eye contact. Thankfully, Caretaker recognised it.
"Come on, you need to sit down."
Whumpee shook their head, then regretted it instantly when the world fell apart around them. All the seats on the train were occupied. Getting one would require weaving through the blockade of people in the aisle, finding someone willing to sacrifice their comfort, and overall being a nuisance. The other commuters were already looking at Whumpee a little warily, flashing glances and raising eyebrows at their corner before turning away again. The last thing Whumpee wanted was more attention. Besides, the seats were quite far away. One, two, three steps... Whumpee couldn't count anymore.
The train turned another corner, tipping Whumpee into Caretaker's arms.
"Whumpee, you're boiling," Caretaker exclaimed as Whumpee's skin met theirs.
"I'm fine," Whumpee said. Or at least, they tried to. Instead of words, all they managed was a short, muffled groan that sounded every bit as fragile as they felt. "I just feel kind of..."
Weak.
Tired.
Sick.
Nothing at all...
The last of Whumpee's strength faded.
The world tipped sideways, and everything disappeared.
Tips for Writing Injuries
✧ Broken ribs suck. You don’t just “walk it off.” Breathing hurts. Laughing hurts. Existing hurts. Characters with rib injuries won’t be doing heroic sprints.
✧ Concussions aren’t instant naps. Dazed vision, nausea, dizziness, maybe even personality changes, but they’re not going to collapse neatly like in the movies.
✧ Blood loss is sneaky. It’s not just about dramatic pools of blood. It’s dizziness, confusion, and the body getting cold as circulation tanks.
✧ Adrenaline lies. Someone can take a serious injury and not feel it until the fight’s over. That “I didn’t realize I was bleeding until later” trope? Very real.
✧ Twisted ankles are brutal. One bad step and suddenly running is off the table. Even walking hurts like hell. Perfect way to ground a chase scene.
✧ Burns linger. Even small burns hurt more than most people expect. Blisters, infection risk, constant pain, it’s not just a cool scar later.
✧ Dislocated shoulders = useless arm. Characters can’t keep swinging a sword or firing a gun. They’re basically fighting one-armed until it’s fixed.
✧ Shock is a thing. Pale skin, trembling, rapid heartbeat, and eventually disorientation. A character might not even realize how bad their wound is.
✧ Stitches aren’t magic. Getting sewn up is painful and recovery takes time. They’re not instantly battle-ready after a needle and thread.
✧ Scars tell stories. Some fade, some don’t. Some stay sensitive forever. Don’t forget the aftermath when the wound becomes part of the character.
Someone who’s been stressed for an extended period of time and is barely holding it together feeling a wave of relief when they start to feel a sore throat and fever coming on because *finally* they have an excuse to fall apart.

based on the drabble prompt “i didn’t know it was this bad”
“Hey,” A groans, head pounding and muscles throbbing. “Can you grab me another blanket?”
B makes their way toward the couch where A is already nestled beneath a throw blanket and the comforter from their bed and presses a hand to their forehead. They wince, sympathetically sucking air in through their teeth.
“i don’t think so, honey,” B says apologetically. their eyes are sad as they push a stray lock of hair from A’s face. “You’re even hotter now than you were this morning. I want to take your temperature again, okay?”
A sighs but sits up, the room spinning a bit as they hear B gather supplies from the other room. They return with a damp washcloth, a small pill bottle, and a digital thermometer. They press a hand to A’s chest, gently ushering them to lean back against the cushions.
Taking A’s face in their hand, B gently pries their jaw open and slips the thermometer beneath their tongue. “Good job,” they murmur, placing the cloth against A’s sweaty forehead. They shudder violently, but don’t resist.
“I know, I know,” B reassures them. “I know it feels like you’re freezing, but it’ll help.”
A shudders again. The wet cloth is agonizing against their skin and the thermometer in their mouth is making them nauseous. It feels like it’s taking forever to read as the probe slowly heats up beneath A’s tongue.
B’s eyes are locked on the numbers as they slowly ascend.
As if on cue, the thermometer sounds in loud, angry trills that pierce through A’s throbbing skull. Though they’ve closed their eyes, flashes of red still infiltrate their field of vision with every beep.
B takes in a sharp breath as they pull the thermometer from A’s lips, rapidly feeling their face, neck and chest in succession.
“Fuck,” they mutter, tossing the thermometer to the side. A wills their eyes to focus on the reading, and it takes a moment for their body to cooperate, but eventually they see the reading glaring back at them.
104.2.
“Shit,” B curses again, planting a kiss on A’s boiling temple. “I didn’t know it was this bad.”
