broken boy

it isn’t as if he meant to be nosy and rude — he really didn’t! he had every intention of asking if he could watch her draw first, but.. as he glanced down at her sketchbook, he was greeted with the sight of some awfully familiar people. did she know them too? it couldn’t be him she was drawing, not when he didn’t —

the girl looked up at him and ventus immediately stood up straight and looked off to the side.

‘Things could not get weirder.’ Well that thought would only cross Sora’s mind a few minutes into the future. 

Right now, he was just interested in the many different people this city manage to bring in. That’s always something exciting! Meeting up with new faces and even becoming friends with them. It’s in Sora’s nature to do so. Another part of Sora’s nature was to follow his heart, and his heart was taking him somewhere inside one section of this place. There was no need to question where he was going, it’s clear that the answer would appear soon. And boy was it soon! There was no way he would not recognize the blonde spikes! Despite wearing something different, he knew exactly who that was.

“Roxas!” Sora called out towards the boy to get his attention, and yet it didn’t seem to work. ‘Maybe he didn’t hear me.’ “Helloooooo.” Sora ran towards the other before continuing. 

“Roxas, are you okay? I was actually feeling really happy to see someone I recognize. You’re not mad about something are you?”

This place was pretty exciting! There was so much to do, and so much to see. So many people to meet and befriend, and while those who hes met so far have.... caught him a little off guard, he’s so, so very excited to meet all of these new people and put names to all of these new faces.

And the exploring — there was so much to see here.It’s not really like anything he’s ever seen before, and oh man, is Ventus ready to take it all in. Something — someone’s voice — catches his attention, before he can decide where he’s going to go next.

He hears Roxas’ name and pauses for a moment — he was around? Or maybe, wait.. actually. Oh. He knew what was going on here. Ventus turned around to see just who it was and explain, but —

“ Oh! Woah. “ Ventus blinked — he looks so much like Vanitas, it was uncanny. A little unnerving, but Vanitas’ eyes weren’t that warm, and well. His hair wasn’t brown either? Yeah. Not Vanitas.

When Roxas had heard there was a beach in this sorry excuse of a city, he was curious. Naturally, of course he’d be– when he found out the beach he was about to go to wasn’t even real, the yearning in the hole where his heart would be had grown, until even a simple mention of the sandy expanse makes his chest ache in a sensation unfamiliar.

(That, he thinks, should be the actual joke here, but the digital city is still too sore of a memory to be a punchline.)

So the fact that every step he takes towards the shore is met with zero resistance is a little… peculiar. It almost feels like a joke, and getting socked in the face right as he sees the sand is the (really bad) punchline. No one’s yelling at him to do something, no one’s threatening his life. If finally seeing a normal beach means having to get over this restless calm, then damn it, he’ll do it.

– Or, he would have done it until he sees the reflection staring back at him. Roxas almost loses his footing from suddenly halting on the sand.

“I’m Roxas,” he says defensively, a hand sweeping to motion to himself. The waves are still calling out to him, and the sand still crunches under his shoes– shame that he barely gets to taste the salty air before the wind gets knocked out of him.

Quickly, the boy’s eyes dart for the skies, then he’s yelling. “This is another one of your sick jokes, isn’t it?! I don’t know how you got inside Sora’s heart to do this, but it’s still not funny!” 

roxas — the name almost sounds familiar, but he’s certain he would of remembered meeting someone that looked like that. you can’t forget your own face, after all.

ventus takes a single step backwards, away from roxas and towards the shoreline. he’s nervous, uneasy — confused. the air is way too tense, and he's beginning to get far too overwhelmed. the waves start to lap at his ankles and carry the broken bits of seashell away. the beginnings of a headache start to settle in, and his heart aches for something.

“ .. I’m Ventus. “ a hand touches his chest, his voice carefully cautious. he watches as roxas looks to the skies and starts yelling to some unseen force. ventus cannot help but to wonder — is he okay? 

Ventus (or Ven? He’s not if having the same face means being on that level yet) has been gracious fielding every question that’s been thrown his way, whether it’s been about the city or about who the hell he is. Roxas even thinks that it could have been a pretty nice conversation, given that the odd situation was taking place on a pretty nice beach.

He’s just about to raise another question to the boy when a loud noise erupts from the city. If he strains to listen, Roxas can hear the crowd roaring in the distance– and if they’re still this loud however far away they are, then his first instincts tell him something’s wrong.

“Hey… You said you’ve been here longer than me, right? Is that noise normal around here or what?”

he’s taking this pretty well, he thinks.

it’s not like he ever expected to meet what could very well be his doppelganger — well, no. roxas isn’t that. they may have the same face, but that was where the similarities end. it was weird, but judging from roxas’ reaction.. he might be taking this a little worse than he is.

so, he smiles gently and answers every question thrown at him. he’s only been here a week, but he thinks he’s got a pretty decent grasp on everything so far. a loud noise interrupts their game of 20 questions, tearing ventus’ attention away completely. a crowd roars, so loud despite being so far away.

“ .. Not really? It’s been pretty quiet since I got here. “ a frown crossed his features, unease and nervousness settling heavily in his gut. “ Something’s up.. I’m gonna go check it out. Come with me if you want, um, I’ll be back here later if you don’t — “ he’s rambling as he rushes off, towards the epicenter of the rising chaos. what could it be?

ventus has never really been to the beach before. he’s seen destiny islands before, for a brief second, but there was truly no time to actually experience it. not with his world falling down around him. this one is small, almost decimated in a way. it’s sad to see something that should be beautiful reduced to such a sad state.

anyhow —

he’s been here for a while, long enough for him to gather a rather impressive collection of various seashells. most of them are either cracked or broken, but he’s sure aqua would appreciate them nonetheless. it’s quiet here, a peaceful reprieve from the city ruins, even if some of the rubble spills over onto the sand. the only sound are the waves lapping onto the shores.

it’s kinda easy to hear when someone else steps onto the sand. it’s not really noisy, but it’s a break in the repetitive waves. he’s always been one for making new friends, so he smiles and turns to say hi to the stranger —

he drops his seashells when he sees them. some of them break when they hit the metal bits of his shoes. tragic.

“ Woah! “ was that his face? “ What — “ 

Exploring the ruins of what once must of been a sprawling city was pretty exciting, as it turned out. He’s never seen such a city before, only read about them in faded books in the Master’s vast library. It seems almost familiar, in a way — like a fading dream. He assumes it’s a dream, for even Radiant Garden could not compare to what lies at his feet in ruins. He’s never been to any other cities before.

He’s taken plenty tumbles since he’s gotten here, has plenty of scrapes and the bruises to prove it. His clothes are a little torn here and there from where they’ve gotten caught on pieces of rebar, and there’s even a few cuts on his arms from those too. This particular tumble isn’t much different than the others he’s taken. The ground is unstable and unsteady, and even though he’s tiny, Terra says he barely weighs anything at all, it gives in under his weight.

Ventus yelps as he falls through the broken floor of a decimated apartment, nearly crashes into someone else, but blessedly, lands at their feet instead. It wasn’t too far of a drop, but geez, it still hurt.

“ I’m sorry! “ he laughs nervously, picking himself up with a wince and dusting off his pants, “ That was pretty clumsy of me, I didn’t mean to — “ Rubbing the back of his head as if he were embarrassed over interrupting a stranger’s day, he looks up and — that wasn’t a stranger.

does it breathe? he’s going to befriend it, somehow (even if it’s mean)

he’s everywhere all at once. never in one place for more than 10 minutes
