Before and After
Before the divorce—Langdon took the cheap route on a lot of things. Instead out forking out $2,000 for movers for his parents, he threw his own back into it, which inevitably cost him more in attorney fees, rehab bills and a medical license he almost lost.
It's not that he doesn't love his family, but it felt good to cut corners and buck the system, something he couldn't do as an emergency doctor. Who doesn't want to save a dollar on movers who utilize shady practices to get you to pay more.
After the divorce—Langdon isn't half-assing anything anymore, especially when it comes to Mel. She doesn't ask for much because of how selfless she is, but when she wants something, Langdon will get it for her—no matter the cost. He'll move heaven and earth for her.
My HC for Frank is that he can pay more and will for the things he really wants, but refuses to because of principle or because there has to be a cheaper way to do it. For instance, he drives a nice car, but refuses to pay ridiculous parking lot prices or stick money in a meter. Instead, he'll find a nice residential street and park there, making sure to adhere to that neighbourhood's parking rules. If he has to walk a few blocks to get where he's going, so be it. He loves to save a buck here and there and why wouldn't he with all the medical school debt and child support payments.
