We’re watching the Return of the King right now, and got to the part where Denethor is introduced. My husband asks me for the context of why Denethor is Like That, since I just finished reading the book. So I explained how Denethor has been using a Palantir for years to get information, and how Sauron has been manipulating him by only letting him see events that give him a worst possible impression of reality.
So my husband replies “Oh! So Denethor is basically just like your grandpa after he starts getting all his news from Fox.” And honestly, yeah pretty much.
So this post has blown up over the past couple of days, and while I do feel that it holds up, it also merits some elaboration based on some of the responses to it. Like, you shouldn’t take away from this that “Sean Hannity is Sauron, lol”.
What does ring true is the fact that propaganda truly is a powerful and insidious tool that can be very effective.
In the books, it is made clear that Denethor is a very smart, competent and strong willed leader. Furthermore, there’s no reason to believe he was naturally inclined to be an evil man. And he ruled Gondor from a position of relative strength. For many years, Sauron avoided confronting Gondor directly, as he knew he would not be able to take them down. So he used a tactic that had served him well in the past - poisoning the mind of his opponent and weakening the country from within. The palantir didn’t even allow him to show untrue things to Denethor or commentate to him directly - all he could do was filter what Denethor was able to see. But that was enough.
A major theme of Lord of the Rings is how evil can triumph when good people give in to despair. And that’s exactly what happened to Denethor. Subtle manipulation through propaganda led him to believe that there was no hope for the future, that he couldn’t trust anyone from outside his city walls, that military might was the only strength that mattered, that scholarly pursuits were pretentious and an invitation to manipulation from outside forces, and that protecting his “legacy” was more important than trying to protect the very people whose well-being he was responsible for. Does that sound like anyone you know?
So, your only takeaway from this shouldn’t be “Fox News is evil”, (though you won’t get much argument from me). What’s even more important to remember is that none of us is immune to this, and that we should also strive not to give into despair when we are being told the world is an awful, decaying place. Keep hoping and working for a better future. And try to be mindful of the agenda your news sources may have.
I theorize the reason "bottoms" appear more prevalent than "tops" on these types of spaces is that it is simply easier to be funny about being a bottom than about being a top without sounding like a sex offender

all these retro style games that are like "NO tutorials NO handholding" apparently forgot about the little books that used to come with your game that detailed all the mechanics, controls, special moves, lore, maps, collectables, means of unlocking additional content, character bios, etc

Punk hasn’t always been about freedom, from the start it was being subversive, and what exactly punk was trying to subvert has always been extremely broad and open to interpretetion by different groups!
The Ramones were conservatives. The Sex Pistols had no intended political message beyond being offensive and their frontman supports Trump now. These initial groups were not acting to make a statement about freedom or kindness but to push against the increasing conformity, cleanliness, and smooth production of mainstream rock music. That did not necessarily entail standing up for freedom or left-wing causes. Of the initial “big three” old-school punk bands, The Clash were the only ones that were politically progressive!
Lots of punks in the 80s wore Nazi armbands for the express purpose of being shocking and offensive to mainstream sensibilities because that is what punk was about. And soon enough, the “ironically edgy” Nazi punks gave way to actual goddamned Nazis in punk. Fuck, have you even heard of Skrewdriver? Do you even know that Nazi punks were the reason that “skinhead” became modern shorthand for “neo-Nazi?”
It’s not possible to deny punk to fascists by is by playing “no true Scotsman.” All that does is make it easier to pretend they’re not there, and not a real problem. If you want to tell the Nazi punks to fuck off, you have to first acknowledge that they have a deep history in punk, and you have to face that reality and confront it! You can’t just bury your head in the sand and pretend the problem isn’t real.

We rly need to bring back the term “acquaintance” like into regular and frequent use. So many high drama community squabbles and feelings of betrayal could be avoided if people just admitted there’s a step between “stranger” and a full on friend whose friendship you have a commitment to continuing and fostering. Like sometimes you’re just aquatinted with someone and you might decide you don’t like them after getting to know them a bit better…that’s very normal
