YOU yourself (if you considering yourself as a good person, someone who wants a better society, one that treats everyone equally) YOU must be the person that do the research, educate & unlearn what you thought you know. I, myself included, I was ignorant of how fucked up America is when it comes to the treatment of black folks. One of the best ways to do this is by reading books. Not books that reinforce old ideas about who we think we are, what we think America is, what we think racism is. Instead, we need to read books that are difficult or unorthodox, that don’t go down easily. Books that force us to confront our self-serving beliefs and make us aware that “I’m not racist” is a slogan of denial. Book like: “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarnation in the Age of Colorblindness” by Michelle Alexander, or “The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Geeat Migration” by Isabel Wilkerson both CHANGED MY LIFE & how I see my own self denial when it comes to racism in America. By not running from the books that pain us, we can allow them to transform us. I ran from antiracist books most of young life. Her name was Gerri Santoro & she was killed from a botched self ILLEGAL abortion in America 1964 by her lover who, when she started to hemorrhage, left her bleeding to death, alone, on a motel floor.
