Reasons to vote Blue this November, part two:
If a unified Democratic government had the rare, unrestricted power to legislate past standard minority roadblocks, the secondary wave of bills would likely focus on overhauling structural economic rules, rewriting the immigration framework, passing strict gun safety measures, and locking in baseline social and consumer protections.
Here are the other major pieces of legislation that would top that wishlist:
Immigration and Border Reform
The U.S. Citizenship Act:
A massive overhaul that would provide a structured pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants already living in the country (including Dreamers, individuals under Temporary Protected Status, and agricultural workers). It would also completely restructure the asylum processing system at the southern border to fast-track backlogs.
The Dream and Promise Act:
Specifically targets young undocumented immigrants who arrived as children, instantly giving them conditional permanent resident status and a clear route to full legal citizenship without fear of deportation.
Gun Safety and Criminal Justice
The Bipartisan Background Checks Act:
This would close the "gun show loophole" by requiring universal background checks for *all* gun sales, including private transfers, online sales, and secondary markets.
The Federal Assault Weapons Ban:
A revival of the 1994 ban, this legislation would prohibit the sale, manufacture, and transfer of specific semi-automatic firearms classified as assault weapons, alongside high-capacity magazines.
The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act:
A broad police accountability bill aimed at restricting the use of certain force tactics (like chokeholds), banning no-knock warrants in federal drug cases, and altering "qualified immunity" to make it easier to hold law enforcement officers civilly liable for constitutional violations.
Economic Equity and Consumer Rights
A bill to gradually lift the federal minimum wage to $15 or higher (and tie future increases to median wage growth), while phasing out the lower subminimum wage for tipped workers.
The Consumer Financial Protection Restoration Act:
Following conservative judicial shifts that have limited the teeth of regulatory watchdogs, this would codify and insulated the funding structure of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and expand its power to crack down on predatory lending, overdraft fees, and corporate "junk fees."
Legislation aimed at rolling back major portions of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act by raising the corporate tax rate and establishing higher tax brackets or minimum alternative taxes for billionaires and high-net-worth individuals.
Civil Rights and Family Infrastructure
This would explicitly amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to add sexual orientation and gender identity as protected characteristics, establishing explicit, nationwide anti-discrimination protections in housing, employment, public education, and credit.
The Family Medical Leave Modernization Act:
A bill establishing a federally guaranteed, permanent paid family and medical leave program, allowing workers to take time off for a new child or serious illness without losing their income.
The American Civics and Media Literacy Act:
A push to fund civic education and counter the rise of algorithmic disinformation by establishing federal grants for media literacy programs in public schools.
