First Person Sentence Starters besides 'I'
Action and Movement â Running down the alley, breath burned my lungs. â Fingers tightened around the handle. â The door slammed behind me. â Blood soaked through my sleeve before I noticed.
Emotion and Internal State â Fear crept in slowly, unwelcome and familiar. â Guilt settled heavy in my chest. â Relief came too late. â Anger rose sharp and sudden.
Sensory Focus â The smell of smoke filled the room. â Cold air scraped my skin. â The floor vibrated beneath my feet. â A metallic taste coated my tongue.
Observation and Setting â The streetlights flickered like dying stars. â Shadows crowded the corners of the room. â Rain hammered the pavement outside. â Silence stretched between us.
Memory and Thought â Every mistake led back to this moment. â The memory refused to stay buried. â Doubt whispered its familiar warnings. â Hope felt dangerous now.
Dialogue Adjacent Openers â âDonât look back,â echoed in my head. â The last thing he said still hurt. â Words failed before they reached my mouth. â A lie waited on my tongue.
Body Reactions â Hands shook despite my effort to stay calm. â Breath caught halfway in. â Muscles locked in place. â Nausea rolled through me.
Time and Transition â By morning, everything had changed. â Moments later, the regret hit. â That night rewrote everything. â Too late, the truth became clear.

Saw this and wanted to try some more:

⢠nurturing â smothering
⢠intuitive â paranoid
⢠protective â controlling
⢠curious â intrusive
⢠driven â obsessive
⢠patient and lets you decide â passive

⢠generous â self-sacrificing
This is one of my favorite things when creating characters (having their core trait/s be something like devotion to the point of obsession)
Ways That Fear Can Show Up (Without Saying âFearâ)
When it creeps: ⢠Foreboding â the air feels wrong before anything actually happens. ⢠Ominousness â silence that feels almost... purposeful. ⢠Misgiving â your instincts tugging at your sleeve, whispering, "Don't."
When it hits fast: ⢠Shock â your brain blanks ⢠Startledâ your heart slams, you inhale ⢠Panic â thoughts fracture; your instincts beg for escape
When it lingers: ⢠Tension â jaw locked, shoulders up near your ears. ⢠Anxiety â background noise that lingers in every thought ⢠Dread â knowing something bad is coming and having to wait for it.
When it turns physical: ⢠Shivers â cold crawling up the spine. ⢠Sweat, dilated pupils, skin gone pale â your own body betrays you. ⢠Weakness â knees like jelly, grip unreliable.
When it overwhelms: ⢠Terror â too big to think around. ⢠Horror â something has gone wrong. ⢠Paralysis â body refusing orders.
When it distorts reality: ⢠Paranoia â patterns where there are none. ⢠Suspicion â every sound feels intentional. ⢠Unease â the sense of being watched without proof.
on âthe blond,â âthe older man,â and other crimes against third-person limited
You know that thing where a story is written in tight third person limited â weâre meant to be inside someoneâs head, seeing the world through their thoughts â and then suddenly the narration says âthe blond frownedâ or âthe shorter woman sighedâ about a person the POV character knows really well?
Thatâs called antonomasia â using a descriptive label instead of a name. And itâs fine when weâre talking about strangers: âthe cashier handed her the receipt,â âthe tall guy blocked the door.â The POV character doesnât know their names, and we just need a quick way to tell people apart.
But the moment itâs used for someone the POV character already knows, it breaks immersion. Because thatâs not how our minds work. We donât think âthe older man smiled at me.â We think âMark smiled.â Or maybe âmy bossâ if that relationship matters in the moment.
Third person limited means the narration sits inside someoneâs perception. Their inner monologue is the storyâs voice. So when you switch from âMark smiledâ to âthe blond smiled,â youâve pulled the camera away from their mind and turned it into an outside shot.
If you want to create distance or irritation, you can do it on purpose â
âThe idiot from accounting emailed again.â
Thatâs character voice. Thatâs judgment. That works.
But otherwise?
As soon as your POV character knows someoneâs name, use it. While we do tend to worry about repetitions, names rarely register as such to the readers.
If you need variety for rhythm, use relational or emotional identifiers that make sense in their head: her friend, his partner, their teacher, the person they loved.
Because inside someoneâs thoughts, there are no âblondsâ or âbrunettes.â
There are only people they know.
my high school english teacher would often critique our literature analysis work by pointing out: "you're treating these characters like they're real people. They're not. They're characters". And it took me a long time to understand what he meant by that. Because I always thought "isn't that the point? That writers want to write characters to be so three dimensional that they act and feel like real people?" but that's not it.
Characters are tools a writer uses in service of a story. Of course characters can be written with depth to the point they feel real to us, but they exist in service of their narrative. Something real people aren't beholden to at all. When discussing characters, I think it's easy to accidentally see these characters as "real people" and not extensions of the author's beliefs. Tools for a narrative. Means of storytelling.

thank u my beloved @sarcasmandships for dedicating me in ur most recent fic u r amazing and so so talented i had to sketch a scene from it immediately
the fic the drawing is based off of
Protective prompts
âŠâË.ââž shielding the other with their body in danger
âŠâË.ââž glaring at anyone who looks at them wrong
âŠâË.ââž tending wounds with shaking hands
âŠâË.ââž offering their coat when the otherâs cold
âŠâË.ââž âstay behind meâ whispered like a vow
âŠâË.ââž carrying them when theyâre too weak to walk

âŠâË.ââž wrapping an arm around them in crowded places
âŠâË.ââž standing guard while the other sleeps
âŠâË.ââž âno one touches you but meâ
Villain motivations & justifications
x revenge wrapped in righteousness: âIâm not cruel, Iâm fair.â (translation: they absolutely are cruel, but theyâve convinced themselves itâs fine.)
x grief that demands the world suffer the same loss. Because healing is for people with healthier coping mechanisms.
x obsession with order, born from a childhood of chaos. Aka: âI color-coded my trauma and now everyone else has to follow the chart.â
x the hunger for freedom, even if it costs others theirs. Nothing says irony like a villain screaming âliberation!â while taking hostages.
x âI will make the world better, even if I have to break it first.â Better for who though? (just them.)
x love twisted into possession: if I canât have you, no one will. Honestly the motto of every toxic ex.
x humiliation turned into fuel: never again the one who bows. Character arc powered entirely by petty grudges.
x the belief that power is the only true protection. Therapy? Never heard of her.
x âsomeone has to make the hard choices, and Iâm strong enough.âÂ
x betrayal so deep that destroying everything feels like justice. I mean, who needs closure when you can have mass destruction.
x desperation disguised as ambition. âI totally meant to do thatâ but villain edition.
x loneliness hardened into cruelty. Because friends are hard to make but enemies? Instant.
x the refusal to be forgotten: âif not loved, then feared.â Peak main-character energy, unfortunately on the wrong side.
x a broken idealist who still thinks theyâre saving the world. Someone please tell them theyâre not the chosen one.
x âpain should be sharedâ... spreading suffering to make it universal.
x craving recognition in a world that overlooked them. Half villain arcs are just ânotice me, senpaiâ but make it violent.
x reshaping reality so it mirrors their own fracture.
x envy sharpened until it looks like destiny. They donât actually want the throne, they just canât stand whoâs sitting on it.
x protecting one person so fiercely it destroys everyone else. We call this âromance but make it everyoneâs problem.â
x the wound of never being chosen, never being enough. Honestly? Relatable. Terrifying, but relatable.
x fear of irrelevance disguised as ambition.
x obsession with someone elseâs light ... âif I canât shine, Iâll burn it out.â Just pure Jealousy.
x ego so fragile it needs the world to bend around it. Like glass, but louder.
Prompts for writing Eyes like that
⧠Looking at her felt like leaning too close to a dying fire, the heat muted, the flames gone, but the coals glowing red, alive in silence.
⧠Her eyes looked carved from autumn itself, every shade of red-brown leaf pressed together until you couldn't tell where the warmth ended and the shadow began.
⧠His stare was the color of brick still warm from the sun, solid, grounded, yet glowing faintly with stored heat.
⧠Brown, yes, but the kind that catches light and breaks into red, like whiskey swirling in a glass, sharp, sweet, dangerous all at once.
⧠There was iron in her gaze, iron laced with flame, the red inside it glinting like sparks buried in metal.
⧠His eyes were the shade of chestnuts roasted too long: dark on the surface, but split them open and the heart is burning, reddish, soft, alive.
⧠When she looked at you, it was less like being seen and more like being seared, her eyes branding every secret into memory with their copper-red heat.

Soft little character quirks
⎠always carries tissues and ends up mothering the whole friend group
⎠has a playlist for everything (rainy mornings, making pasta, folding laundry)
⎠says âbless youâ to sneezes on TV
⎠talks to plants like theyâre roommates
⎠gets excited over new stationery like itâs treasure
⎠keeps their tea/coffee at the âperfect sipâ temperature and brags about it
⎠collects postcards but never mails them
⎠always has candy in their bag âjust in caseâ
⎠buys socks with silly patterns and treats them like rare finds
⎠hums while doing chores without realizing
⎠insists on stopping to pet every cat, even the ones that clearly donât want it
⎠folds receipts into tiny squares and hides them in random pockets
⎠bakes way too much and then panics, handing leftovers to everyone they know
⎠gets emotional over sunsets like itâs the first one theyâve ever seen
⎠has one old stuffed animal they cannot sleep without
⎠keeps saying âone more chapterâ and suddenly itâs 3 a.m.
⎠hoards jars for âfuture useâ but never actually uses them
⎠sends friends pictures of clouds because âthis one looks like a dragonâ
⎠keeps mismatched mugs because âthey each have a personalityâ
On writing internal conflict
the juiciest, most painful, most deliciously human conflict isnât when your characters fight dragons, or armies, or even each other. Itâs when they fight THEMSELVES. And I donât mean a cute little âoh no, should I go left or right on the mapâ problem. I mean the kind of fight that leaves them contradicting themselves, making stupid choices, hurting the people they love because they canât get their shit together.
People are contradictions. You want closeness but also space. You want revenge but also forgiveness. You want freedom but also safety. And you CAN'T âwinâ both. Which means no matter what choice your character makes, theyâre always losing something...
⢠Your character should want two opposite things at once. Not âthey want cake but theyâre on a dietâ... deeper than that. Like: they want to forgive but also punish. They want to be loved but also fear intimacy. They want to belong but also canât stop running.
â˘Â âI know what I should do, but I donât want to.â Honestly? This one carries me. Characters who know the ârightâ choice and still go left are instantly interesting. Theyâre self-sabotaging, theyâre human. Nobody likes a character whoâs perfect at moral math. Give me the disaster who says âscrew itâ and pays the price.
â˘Â Comfort vs. growth. This one is everywhere if you pay attention. Do they stay small, safe, predictable? Or do they risk it all for the terrifying possibility of becoming more? Coming-of-age, romance, even horror lives here. âStay in the cocoon or rip yourself out and bleed on the floor for a chance at wings.â
â˘Â Self-image vs. reality. Oof. This one hurts. Who they think they are vs. what their actions prove them to be. A âgood manâ who does something cruel. A âcowardâ who throws themselves into danger. Nothing breaks a character like realizing theyâve been lying to themselves about WHO THEY REALLY ARE.
â˘Â Fear disguised as logic. Internal conflict loves this mask. They donât say âIâm scared.â They say âitâs not practical.â They pile excuses on top of excuses until even they believe the lie. Fear is sneaky. It makes âreasonableâ decisions feel rational, when really itâs just cowardice in a nicer outfit.
â˘Â The loop... Internal conflict doesnât solve itself in chapter 12 and vanish forever. Real people relapse. They learn their lesson and then do the same dumb thing again in chapter 15, because habits and wounds donât disappear just because a monologue happened.
â˘Â Desire vs. morality. Classic for a reason. âI shouldnât want this thing. But god, I want it anyway.â You can wring a whole trilogy out of this one sentence.
â˘Â The body vs. the brain. Maybe they say âI donât love youâ while their hands are shaking. Or they tell themselves theyâre brave while their stomach knots. That disconnect between what they say/think and what their body does? Pure GOLD, use it.
The point is: internal conflict isnât neat. Itâs not a âoh they overcame their fear, check.â Itâs fucking ugly, and our characters are allowed to contradict themselves, relapse, screw up, hurt people, learn too late, or never learn at all.
