to clarify first, i believe that both wasps and mosquitoes are needed. HOWEVER in the long run, wasps are actually waaay more helpful. despite being notoriously territorial (which makes a lot of people scared of them) it's really not much of an issue in the long run compared to how massively helpful they are to their native ecosystems. even hornets, which ARE WASPS, are super duper helpful (and actually less aggressive unless threatened!) to their ecosystem. anyway back to WHY wasps are helpful. wasps are like insect police which is like super awesome. they're hunters and kill tons of little pests like aphids and flies which can harm crops and or gardens which actually makes it so people don't need to use pesticides that hurt the environment more (hooray!) AND!!! while they're sadly not recognized for this as much as their cousins (honeybees, bumblebees etc etc) they do actually pollinate as well!! pollination, as we all know, is CRUCIAL for our environment's survival so they're so so incredibly helpful in that aspect! mosquitoes are primarily useful as food sources for other species. they pollinate too, but also have the massive downside of biting people for protein in blood (ouchie) and carrying diseases. a lot of people are allergic to bee stings which some could argue is really bad BUT again mosquitoes carry diseases which statistically kills WAY more people. literally according to the cdc wasp/hornet stings killed an average of 72 people yearly in the US while diseases carried by mosquitoes kill much more. there are >120 deaths from just west nile virus yearly in the us and were 597,000 deaths across 83 countries in 2023 which is bad bad baddddd. idk about yall but i would much rather be in the hospital for a bee sting than for malaria. eughh. in conclusion, despite wasps being a little intimidating and (unfortunately) widely disliked, they are objectively superior to mosquitoes. thank you for listening to my ted talk
