On Simon's bad days Ryland puts all of the red clothes into the closet so he doesn't have to see them and think of being soaked in blood again.
On Ryland's bad days Simon opens all the windows so he can hear the artificial ocean, and takes away the risk of the house smelling sterile in any way.
They watch shitty slasher movies because they don't have any chance of bringing flashbacks.
When Simon finally got comfortable enough for touch after God knows how long, they both just sat on the floor holding eachother, staring off blankly into space with tears flowing (Rocky and Adrian were very concerned that they might have missed an important detail about humans melding together).
Ryland teaches Simon how to swim. He dragged Simon out of the water once because his foot touched a rock shaped too much like the teeth on the Eel. Ryland didn't question him, just dragged Simon out of the water, wrapped him in the beach towel, and held him while his nails dug into his skin.
Simon teaches Ryland how to properly sew. He shows Ryland how to embroider little designs, and how to make it so the stitching doesn't dig into his side. When he successfully made a short for the first time he cried, and Simon held him while he slurred thanks and apologies.
They start a small garden inside the biodome so they have more variety in their diet, Ryland can study Eridian plant cells to his hearts content, and Simon can watch plants grow from anything other than blood.
Ryland wakes up in the middle of the night terrified he's back in space, unable to see anything because it's so dark. Simon takes him to sit outside so he knows he's on a planet, even if he hates being too close to the ocean.
Simon wakes up screaming sometimes, fighting and hitting, thinking the walls are the lung again. Ryland turns on the lights and sits on the couch with him while Simon fixes whatever damage he did, even if Ryland already forgave him, because that's what helps.
Sometimes they help with weird things that snap them out of their spiralling.
Simon gets wrapped in a heated blanket until he's sweating because he's still used to the cold of space stations with failing energy sources, and Ryland sits on the floor and just rambles.
Ryland sometimes lies face down on the ground, or under weighted everything. Sometimes he asks Simon to lay on top of him until he starts having trouble breathing, and Simon will do it, talking about whatever comes to mind.
And at the end of the day whenever Rocky or any other Eridian asks "Simon Grace mates, question?" They both make uncomfortable faces and start laughing.
