For all that the 1800s etiquette guides are--obviously--derangedly sexist from a modern perspective? They're also mindblowing in how casually they will assert things that MODERN DAY CONSERVATIVES would scream and cry and shit their pants about.
"People back then always married young it's natural!!!" Every single 1800s guide I've ever met casually mentions that, of course, you really shouldn't get married before you're at least 20, and waiting until 25 is usually better.
Or, like. Okay here's a long segment:
Just firmly going "it is crazy sexist to blame The Wife for overspending when thirty seconds of asking questions will immediately establish that her husband was outright lying to her about how much money they had. Talk to your wife like a normal person."
Or--okay, here. A section on being honest and not writing love letters in secret, because that's usually a good sign that there's something untoward going on....
....except that he then immediately acknowledges that sometimes, the reason you're hiding this from your parents is that your parents suck. That there are parents who frankly have not earned the right to approve or disapprove of your partner.
(I realize the phrasing there sounds a lot less strong than my summary, but--trust me on this. When you're familiar with the narrative voice of these kinds of books, this passage is downright radical. The mere acknowledgement that if you treat your kids badly, it's your own damn fault when they don't talk to you? I've genuinely never seen that before in this genre. Don't freak out over "properly trained", either. It's just a linguistic shift--at the time, "training" was used the way we would say "raising" a child today. )
"Delete all the nudes and sexts after a breakup or you're a piece of shit" has been the standard expectation since EIGHT. TEEN. EIGHTY. FIVE.
"Men and women being friends with each other is literally normal. Don't be a controlling freak."
Anyway I was wrong the publishing date is actually 1882 so like.
"If you have to abuse a child to keep order in your classroom then you're a bad teacher."
So like @ the modern Republican party, are the "traditional family values" in the fucking room with us right now--
"Women should absolutely work if the family economy requires it, that is only reasonable. Trying to keep your 'status' at any cost is foolish" and "Of course the wife should be open with her opinions and have full knowledge of the family economy and affairs" - Miss Hartley (The Ladies' Book of Etiquette, and Manual of Politeness, 1860) telling off every rightwing and tradwife grifter
instead of a buddie breakup at some point in the show I would very much like buddie amnesia arc tbh
when you tell people passports don't need to exist and people should be able to travel as they did throughout most of human history they think that's going too far because in their mind there exists a hoard of nameless faceless immigrants waiting to flood their country and "take over". without realising that there is nothing inherently superior about the imperial core countries - the culture, the food, the clothing, the architecture is not superior than that of the rest of the world. all you've got going for you are the benefits reaped from hundreds of years of historical colonisation and the continuing benefits of modern day imperialism. do you think if people's homes weren't subject to manufactured violence, artificial scarcity, and systematic disenfranchisement they'd all just wanna leave? can you not imagine a life where someone would be happier living in uganda than the usa?
Saw this on FB and tried to find the original, which I haven't, but the point is so solid.

Honestly, Eddie's reaction to Buck saying it would've been better for Chris if he was the one who got shot is actually crazier than it was for him to change his will and just not tell Buck. Because that's an objective truth. Of course it would've been better for the kid who already lost his mother if his dad didn't get shot. It just would be. Chris has a solid support system, but that doesn't replace his father. But Eddie takes personal offense to the implication. Because changing his will made Buck a parent in Eddie's brain, he just didn't inform Buck. So he realizes he needs to let Buck know that he is a parent in Eddie's brain. So that he wouldn't say things that imply he's not. And that's just a fascinating glimpse to the way Eddie himself doesn't realize just how tangled in his life he's making Buck be.

Many lgbt teenagers and young adults growing up on the internet today have socially conservative beliefs that they voice at all times that they got from their conservative parents which they’ve never challenged because they think the life experience of being gay or trans makes them politically progressive
This is why I hate it when people say something homophobic and then go “so you’re really accusing me, a whole ass lesbian, of being homophobic 🙄” like yeah
I still think the baby box is one of the most awful moments of the Buckley parents (that we see on screen).
I understand not having a baby box for Buck because when he was a baby, their other child was actively dying. I'm not thrilled about it. It's not great. But it's understandable, to an extent. They could have his later, though, but the point kinda stands. I kinda get it.
But showing it to Maddie as an adult while Buck was in the room ? Like, it wasn't going to be obvious Buck would ask about his ? And then just not answering him at all ? No apology? Nothing ? Chim had to be the one to say something, anything to make it a little less awful for Buck (and let's be real no one at this table believe they have a baby box for him).
Oof.
Having Joe ask Danny to ask Steve to stop looking for Doris is both utterly disgusting (more people trying to manipulate Steve for their own ends) and utterly hilarious (from an outsiders perspective Steve does whatever Danny says)
And we have definitely seen Steve and Danny completely change their initial course of action when the other asks (I’m thinking of the “I’m gonna go home and rest” scene from I think season 7 and then just a few episodes ago Danny told Steve it was insane to negotiate with terrorists to get Cath back and Steve said “but Danny this is reminding me of the time the terrorists killed my dad 🥺” AND THEN DANNY ROLLED WITH IT IMMEDIATELY ILLEGAL CRIMINAL ACTIVITY AND ALL) but having an outsider who is hardly ever in Hawaii to actually witness this behavior say “oh I’ll ask Danny to ask Steve the notoriously stubborn to change his mind that will totally work” is actually insane. We’re supposed to believe these two aren’t together? We’re supposed to believe they aren’t madly in love?
And I love that Danny said “um ☝️ no”
This is why Steve trusts him more than anyone else. Danny puts Steve’s best interest first every time. Danny also does not want Steve hung up on the Doris thing but what he isn’t gonna do is let someone else try and control Steve through him.

Person who allegedly doesn’t care about Taylor Swift but posts about how lame she is like seven times in one day. I’m sure you thinking badly of her hurts her feelings soooo bad. Keep posting about how she’s untalented while she breaks every musical record there is
Danny getting mad because Steve called Max his bff okay girl
The reaction Danny has to anyone but Steve giving him a hug needs to be studied like what
the other buzziest thing about buddie to me is how badly they want to take care of each other. buck is running through the hospital because eddie is hurt. he is making sure chris is taken care of because he knows that is what eddie would want. he is freaking out when he finds out eddie visited a cardiologist and didn't tell him about it. he is breaking down locked doors when chris calls to tell him something is wrong. he is rubbing eddie's shoulder during one of the worst moments of eddie's life. meanwhile, eddie keeps showing up at buck's door with food he doesn't even like that much because he is worried and he knows buck and chris love pineapple on pizza. he is sitting by buck's bedside, never straying far, giving buck medicine and water. he is reminding buck that ice goes on the eye and that he doesn't have to be anything for anyone. he knows when buck needs to come to him, and he gives him the space to do that. they want to take care of each other so badly. all the time. they are each other's safe spaces, the place they go when they are hurt or tired or scared. they choose each other and their family again and again and again. they are each other's person.

Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: 9-1-1 (TV) Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Evan "Buck" Buckley/Eddie Diaz (9-1-1 TV) Characters: Evan "Buck" Buckley, Eddie Diaz (9-1-1 TV) Additional Tags: POV Eddie Diaz (9-1-1 TV), Feelings Realization, Getting Together, First Kiss, Friends to Engaged, Love Confessions, Oblivious Eddie Diaz (9-1-1 TV), Eddie is just figuring it out, i meant to make eddie ambiguosly queer but he said nope so, Demisexual Eddie Diaz (9-1-1 TV), it's not really relevant. he just decided to go that way and i had to respect it, buck is having a crises about it, and eddie is ready to marry him about it, Buck's favorite word in this is Eddie, Post-Season/Series 09, Fluff Summary:
“Your family is adorable,” she says with a smile, before turning her attention to the drawer to get Eddie’s change. “Oh,” he breathes, blinking a couple of times, “thank you.” It’s the only reaction that feels correct. That is his family. Unconventional, maybe, but real in every way that matters. “How long have you been married?” She asks, finally handing him the change, and his brain comes to a screeching halt as he looks at her properly. Hailey, as per the name tag pinned next to a little rainbow flag, who can’t be more than a few months older than Chris, thinks he’s married to Buck. He doesn’t know exactly what to do. “We’re,” he tries, before clearing his throat, “we’re not married.” or Eddie just wanted to buy some ice cream.
UNPOPULAR OPINION: A lot of "mental health issues" disappear when bills are paid, rent is secure, and the fridge is full. Peace is expensive. And pretending money doesn't affect mental health is privilege.

I feel like I was the blue and green girl, and then the blue and yellow got more explicit, and I stopped focusing on the blue and green since it seemed like the actual getting together arc is going to be blue and yellow. But I was making that post from yesterday, and I remembered a blue and green aspect that proves to me that, yes, buddie is coming, and how I keep meaning to talk about it, but I don't, so here it is. More in-depth explanation of the blue and green can be found here, it was written during season 7, but the pattern has not changed, if anything, we got more examples.
The blue and green was established with madney, being present in their first scene and being continuously used with most couples we see on the show, from main couples, to temporary li, to people in calls. And while this was happening, the show was very careful not to put Buck and Eddie with blue and green tops in the same scene, which is interesting when you consider the way Eddie wears green a lot, and Buck wears blue a lot. Until 613.
613 we had the poker date and everything that gave us, but more importantly, we had buddies first blue and green scene while madney and bathena got blue and green scenes.
Something we talked about a lot at the time this aired was the colors show the stage of development of the relationship. Buddie is lighter because they're still figuring it out, madney is a bit darker because they just got a house together and were moving toward marriage, and bathena had been married for years, so they are darker.
But then the next blue and green scene starts a pattern. Natalia never got a blue and green scene, but buddie got a blue and green scene during the episode with their first official date episode. It's also the episode Eddie meets Marisol again, who also doesn't get a blue and green scene. So in 617, when we see Buck and Eddie start to put effort into these random women, we get a scene where Buck and Eddie are in the romantic intention color combo. While not getting those with the women.
Welcome to the use of blue and green with 911 couples is not confined to clothing and how I believe this applies to buddie since season 2, a masterpost. (this does contain an explanation of the use of blue and green in the more obvious way, the clothes, so even if you don't believe the other elements of the scene part, this could still bring some clarity on the way blue and green is important)
Okay, so, after 706 a lot of people said they thought about me with the buddie/bathena blue and green scene, and I LOVE THAT, but a few people also came to ask me to explain more about the blue and green in general and why that is important and I realized my blue and green thoughts are scattered into multiple posts because I did figure out more stuff since I wrote the first one and season 7 is giving me more things to support the 2 main color theory theories I have when it comes to buddie/Buck, so I decided I need to write one long post about it all, including thoughts on 706 specifically.
Okay, so easy pattern to spot first, the blue and green thing is used with a lot of couples throughout the show, core couples, adjacent couples, random people in calls, the blue and green is used in a major piece of clothing in a couple, a shirt, a jacket, a dress, after s6 the use of pants was introduced more explicitly, and that has transferred to s7, but it is something heavily used since s2 (I can't find a conclusive example in s1 and the first obvious example is madney's first scene in 206) (this will have a bunch of tiny images because I'm trying to stay within the image limit, but if you click on them you can zoom in if tumblr doesn't decide to hellsite, I made them high quality enough)
And it is not just about meant-to-be couples, it's literally just a way to exemplify romantic connection. And while it is used a lot with most of the couples we see, the easiest couple to track is madney, since they have a lot of blue and green scenes, tracking back all the way down to their first scene, but bathena also have quite a few scenes. I love the scene at the station in 308 (last column, 3rd row down) because the cutout of kid Bobby makes it so there's a double blue Bobby there.
So the clothes element is very easy to track. It is a very real aspect of the show. And that is interesting when you consider the actual color theory aspect of it, because blue and green are analogous colors, which means they are right next to each other in the color wheel, and that's a color scheme used to create a harmonious look, it's about cohesion, creating visual unity, and it is what this accomplishes, the couples look balanced even if we don't fully register why, they just naturally work well together and that translates even if you don't know color theory.
This is the part we know exists in the show, but the thing is, I don't believe the show only uses that with the clothes, and again, madney is the easiest way to track that.
I noticed this while making a 512 set for the hiatus rewatch since I was focusing on the scenery to pick the shots I wanted because something about that episode is that it is green in nature since it is a Saint Patrick's Day episode. But everything about madney that episode is blue and green even when madney isn't dressed in blue and green. Pretty much everything about it has blue or green elements.
