Mac's rejection from his dad is so fundamental to him that he created a god to fulfill Luther's position in Mac's life even when he's not there. Mac made his god in Luther's image: conditional love, demanding, unforgiving, mostly absent. Mac's worldview was shook when he met those christian gays on the boat because Mac's god is supposed to hate him for being gay just like Luther hates Mac for being gay. Mac wants to earn his father's love and yet he believes in a god who will not love him for who he is the same way Luther doesn't. Mac created a father figure to reject him again.

i like how in dennis & dee's mom is dead when the guys go out to look for dudes you can see what type of man they're attracted to. dennis goes for the younger, lean, fashionable blond guy. mac goes for the ripped guy by the gym equipment. charlie goes for the older, passionate, poetic man with the crossbow. but he also is the only one to successfully bring the guy home with them. and he sits in bed with the plushies and has the guy read a bedtime story to him

What do you mean he put off the chance of being together forever because he wanted him to live a mortal life the way he should and because he worried he would grow to hate him and he couldn't bear it. What do you mean he eventually saw his love dying and he couldn't bear it, so he turned him. What do you mean he was his first and only fledgling because he was just that special.
