the ballad of a princess and a hatter pt. 6 | max hatter x fem oc
the inside of the white rabbitâs cottage was a cluttered, cozy haven of ticking clocks, teacups, and mismatched cushions. as the rest of the crew collapsed onto the furniture, instantly tearing into the baskets of wonderland pastries left on the table, max disappeared towards the kitchen for a brief moment.
when he walked back over to where i was standing, he held a massive, vibrant pink citrus fruit. it was one of the infamous pink lemonades, freshly picked with a hollow, built-in straw curling naturally through the vine.
âhere, princess,â max murmured, pressing the cool fruit into my hands. his dark eyes crinkled at the corners. âitâs sweet. just like you.â
my cheeks instantly heated up a tiny bit, i took a quick sip through the vine straw just to avoid his gaze, the tart, sugary liquid doing absolutely nothing to cool me down. max let out a low, satisfied chuckle, clearly enjoying the reaction, before he gave me some space to let everyone settle down.
later that evening, after everyone had eaten their fill and the cottage fell into a heavy, exhausted quiet, i slipped upstairs to the main bedroom. the weight of what i was about to do felt crushing. i sat right on the edge of an old frame bed, my back rigid, my hands clenched tightly in my lap.
a soft creak of the floorboards drew my attention. max stepped into the room, he looked even more tall in this miniature house, his eyes instantly taking in my stiff, nervous posture. he closed the small distance between us, sitting down on the mattress right next to me.
âyouâre completely wound up,â he whispered, his tone dropping softly.
âiâm sneaking off tonight, max,â i whispered back, looking at him with absolute urgency. âeveryone is going to sleep. this is my only chance to get to the vault. if i donât do it now, iâll never get the pocket watch.â
max didnât hesitate. he nodded firmly, âthen we go now. i told you, iâm not letting anything happen to you. if anyone catches us heading toward the door, weâll just tell them we needed some air after the long day we had. they wonât question it.â
we slipped back downstairs, moving quietly toward the wooden exit. a few of the kids tracked our movement out of the corners of their eyes. pink raised an eyebrow, nudging chloe with a knowing smirk, while the smee twins exchanged a quiet chuckle. because we had been acting weird and unusually close all day, nobody thought twice about us sneaking out togetherâto the rest of the crew, it just looked like the princess and the vk were sneaking off for a secret date. i wish that was happening.
the moment the crisp night air hit our faces, i took the lead, heading straight toward the towering, shifting hedges of the green labyrinth that led to the heart of the kingdom.
as we walked the dark, winding path, the tough exterior max usually wore seemed to entirely melt away. the quiet stillness of the night made him appear more vulnerable, and he leaned in closer to me, his voice carrying a heavy, unexpected angst.
âi just... i really hope this crazy plan of yours works, alyssa,â max murmured, staring straight ahead as he fiddled with his hands. âit would be so nice to finally have only happy memories with my dad. to have actually stayed in wonderland...â he stopped for a split second, his jaw clenching before he turned his dark eyes completely onto me, full of a deep, painful longing. âespecially being with you. i wish i never got separated from you, princess. i thought about it all the time.â
hearing the raw confession admit out loud broke something inside me. i stopped dead on the path. without a word, i felt the urge to throw my arms completely around his neck, pulling him into a desperate, tight embrace.
max froze for a split second before his arms wrapped securely around my waist, holding me so warmly and tightly it felt like he was trying to anchor his entire universe to mine. against my shoulder, his breathing turned shallow, and i felt a single, heavy tear dampen the fabric on my shoulder. he had finally broken.
âiâll make it happen for you, max. no matter what,â i whispered, pulling back just enough to gently wipe the tears from his cheeks with my thumbs.
maxâs eyes widened slightly, under the soft touch of my hands, his usual confident persona completely melted, leaving him looking submissive, as he let me care for him.
he cleared his throat, trying to regain his composure as he looked toward the dark horizon. âright. but... how are we even going to get inside the royal vault? didnât chloe said it was under high security.â
i offered a small, confident smile. âbecause iâm a princess here. the sensors will notice iâm there, itâll automatically open up pretty easily. and if the automatic sensor fails, i can just scan my hand.â
we entered the grand maze, and the difficulty immediately spiked. the heavy hedges were constantly shifting, the paths closing and opening at random, forcing us to keep running, turning, and backtracking. by the time we finally made it to the center, we were completely worn out, out of breath, and running on pure adrenaline.
in the dead center of the clearing stood the magnificent royal vault, completely surrounded by silence. no guards. no chloe. no red.
i stepped up to the stand-out, heart symbol made of grass. instantly, a soft light glowed over me, recognizing my royal lineage. the heavy mechanisms groaned, and the vault opened up slowly, revealing rows of shiny royal treasures, ancient crowns, and glittering artifacts. right in the center, resting on a velvet pedestal, was the pocket watch.
we were both so ecstatic that we instantly threw our arms around each other again. but this time, the embrace shifted. the initial relief completely vanished, replaced by an intense, dizzying wave of intimacy. wrapped in each otherâs arms in the quiet vault, the space between us disappeared. i could feel the heavy rhythm of his chest, the warmth of his skin, and a deep, unspoken need radiating from him. for a breathless second, our lips were only inches apart.
pulled back by the gravity of the mission, we forced ourselves to ignore the sudden tension, letting go to grab the pocket watch from the pedestal.
i quickly double-checked over my shoulder to make sure the coast was entirely clear.
max gave me a firm nodâthe signal to wind the clock.
he looked down, noticing my hands were shaking slightly against the coldness of the watch. i gripped the intricate knob and gave it a sharp, deliberate twist.
but instead of the world spinning backward, instead of the portal opening to the past, the pocket watch began to violently glitch. the glass face illuminated, throwing a projection into the air above us. it wasnât a time-travel portal. it was a memory. his memory.
the projection showed the dark, gritty interior of a dungeon on the isle of the lost, probably dated only just a few months ago. max was sitting on a broken crate, stressed, and intensely focused as he sketched furiously inside a dark brown leather journal.
the projection zoomed in on the page. it was a drawing of me.
but i wasnât wearing my proper, boring princess wardrobe. he had drawn me in these incredibly stylish, edgy, modern outfitsâexactly the kind of clothes i secretly hoped to wear instead of the bland royal fashion required of me. he had drawn me so beautiful, so radiantly pretty, that tears pricked the edges of my eyes. even with no colors added to the sketch, the way he looked at me through his art made me look completely radiant.
the projected memory shifted as the past max turned the page. the title at the top read: the ballad of a princess and a hatter.
it was a song. the pages were covered in raw, aching lyrics written in his messy handwriting, all about how much he yearned for me, how much he missed his princess, and how bitterly he regretted taking our childhood time together for granted. in the projection, you could see a tear welling in his eyes as his pen traced the words i love you. but the second a loud voice yelled his name from the other room, the past max panicked. he quickly erased the confession, wiped his face, aggressively fixed his hair in a broken mirror, and slammed the journal shut, shoving it deep under a pile of clothes.
the projection snapped off, leaving the vault in sudden, agonizing silence.
max looked absolutely mortified. his secrets laid bare in front of me. he had turned his entire body completely away from me, his head hanging low, his arms crossed tightly over his chest as if trying to shrink away from me.
i stepped around him, my heart aching with an overwhelming wave of affection. âmax... hey. why are you upset?â my voice was incredibly soft. âi love the way you drew me. and... you made a song? whatâs it about?â
max swallowed hard, his jaw clenching as he slowly looked at me, his defense mechanisms completely failing. âitâs about... i-itâs about how my world was completely dark, alyssa. but every time i tried to write something, it just kept turning into you. i spent so many years terrified that you had forgotten me, and i justââ
he was rambling, his voice trembling with a sweet, frantic honesty. i couldnât take the distance anymore.
stepping directly into his space, i cut him off completely by placing my hand on his chest and kissing him softly on the lips.
max let out a tiny, surprised whine against my mouth, his body freezing for a fraction of a second before he completely melted into the kiss. his arms instantly found my waist, pulling me flush against him as his hand slid up to catch the back of my hair, deepening the kiss with a desperate, heavy passion that had been building for all these years.
we finally broke the kiss, breathless and spinning, to see red and chloe standing right in the doorway of the vault, their jaws completely dropped in absolute shock.
