Very long but interesting chapter : depressive and bipolar disorders
(Don’t you love when your notes end right at the bottom of the page? I do!)
I’m taking a subject called “Indoeuropean” this quarter.
other language learners: set fluency goals, have a rigid study schedule that they stick to, make notes on every new grammar point they learn, memorise 10 new words a day, regularly polish duolingo skills, skype twice a week with native speakers, planning a trip overseas
me: has no idea what the fuck they are doing, watches a lot of youtube, cries
I’m constantly stuck somewhere between “people aren’t using that word correctly” and “language is constantly evolving and if a significant portion of the population uses a word a certain way then that use is correct simply by virtue of being used as such in the vernacular.”

Hi! I'm also learning Chinese at the moment and struggle a bit with remembering characters. Have you got any tips on remembering and practising them? Thanks :)
Hi, sorry for the late reply! I haven’t been on Tumblr much lately.
I’m not an expert on this, but I’ll share some quick tips.
A key thing to remember is that Chinese characters are often composed of phonetic (sound) and semantic (meaning) parts.
For example, 歪 (crooked, slanting) is made up of 不 and 正, literally “not straight”.
CharacterPop is a very useful website that breaks down characters into their components. Often, I’ll use the breakdowns as a basis for creating mnemonic stories on Memrise. (On my profile you can see a bunch of examples under “Mems”)
Writing out characters by hand is essentially necessary to learn Chinese. Avoid just going through the motions; actively think about what you’re writing.
Repetition and especially encountering the word in context will really solidify what you learn.
I hope this was helpful! Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions :)
Upsetting grammar: “It is imperative that you use the indicative” is actually subjunctive

Language dates
Come over and learn the basic grammar of my conlang
Let’s create a Memrise course of the worst swear words in both our languages
We should make cookies in the shape of kanjis and see if we manage to make any that are recognisable after baking
Hey, let’s listen to a language we don’t know for 30mins to get a feel of how it sounds and then try and come up with words in that language and check if they exist on a dictionary: winner gets 1 kiss for every point of advantage they scored on the other
If I don’t understand your language, you tell me a sentence and I have to understand if it’s a compliment or an insult “your lips are really soft” vs “did your face get hit with something”

14 may, 4:15pm // today i wasted a perfectly good rainy day running around doing things. wish I could have curled up in bed with a book instead.
2.19.16 // working on an English assignment - it's going to be typed, but sometimes writing drafts by hand really helps! (as long as they're legible, unlike mine... oops.)
