We have this interesting situation where we basically no longer have privacy nor the expectation of privacy, but we also don't have community or meaningful connection with others, so we're all simultaneously both completely exposed and absolutely alone, and please understand that when I say this situation is "interesting", what I in fact mean is that it's "nightmarish and I wish I could wake up"
today I learned that in 2008, the city council of florence overturned dante’s sentence of execution if he returned from exile. yes, dante’s inferno dante, who died in 1321.
but the funniest part of this is not that they were debating the exile of a man who has been dead for over 500 years.
the funniest part is that the vote was 19-5. five people voted to uphold dante’s exile.
The objectively funniest part of this is actually that the city that holds his remains, Ravenna, refused to give his remains back. This was a ploy from florence to have his remains moved back for the tourist money and its been ongoing for a long time. Florence had a fake tomb built in the city to trick people into visiting, and have tried to force the return of the remains.
His actual caretakers have been very steadfast in keeping them hidden, moved, or generally out of reach to respect his choice in life to never, ever, ever return to florence, even when he was first offered the chance to return. This is at this point an almost millenium long feud that florence is really, really mad about losing

the usa is absolutely on its way to a fully fascist state & whenever anyone says that, there's always a comment that says "america has always been fascist." imo you're willfully downplaying an authoritarian takeover in order to sound edgy. all it does is derail the conversation & diminish the significance of what's been happening over the last 8 months. nothing will distract from a useful conversation about resistance more than changing it to be about the last 250 years instead. it's insidious and honestly straight out of a handbook on how to disrupt organizing
People keep missing the point of this post, so let me spell it out: a fascist state is led by a dictator. Yes, the US has always been a white supremacist, colonialist and imperialist state, and has committed horrific crimes against its own people as well as people in many other countries, and we absolutely should criticize that and talk about how we got to this point. But don’t you fucking dare downplay what is happening now because you don’t know what fascism means. Fascism is a specific type of government/ideology, not just a word for “bad people doing bad things.” It absolutely overlaps with nationalism, racism, and militarism, all things that the US is known for, but the US has not actually been led by a dictator before. When you say “the US has always been fascist” you are naively ignoring how much worse things could get - and discouraging resistance to Trump.
Hey. If people aren't aware, Microsoft admitted they know who you and where you are at all times and will give your info to the police.
They have a Global Device Identifier (GDID) Tracker that functions as a fingerprint for your PC that can surpass VPNs, proxy servers and countries. Although it can't survive a clean reinstall of Windows (it can survive updates), because Microsoft forces you to go to the internet and log in into a Microsoft account, they will be able to get to you.
Microsoft kept it secret and it was only found out when the FBI tracked a hacker thanks to the information Microsoft gave them.
You should be paying attention to this, and possibly consider moving away from Windows. If a government, especially the US government, doesn't like you for some reason, this could be seriously concerning.

For journalism, activism, or domestic abuse situations, skip Windows and use Linux routed through Tor instead of a commercial VPN. A GDID doesn’t care which VPN you use, only that it’s still the same Windows installation.

What has researchers uneasy is everything else the case reveals. Costin Raiu, a well-known malware researcher, asked on the Three Buddy Problem podcast how much of this exists on other platforms, and whether it is linked more permanently to hardware. Two things back that up:
There’s no consent screen. A GDID gets assigned when you sign into a Microsoft Account. Apple’s advertising identifier needs an App Tracking Transparency prompt and a visible reset; Android’s works the same way. GDID has neither, and a Windows reinstall only gets you a new number Microsoft can still get back to the same account.
Then there’s activation. Massgrave, the group behind Microsoft Activation Scripts, notes that Windows setup sends hardware info to Microsoft and gets identifiers back, the same tokens later used for Store access and licensing: “It’s impossible to prevent Windows from getting a GDID without breaking activation and UWP app[s].” Anyone who lost a license after swapping a motherboard has already met a smaller version of this.
Here's the complaint filed to the court, the primary source for the case mentioned in the article. You can find mentions of GDID on page 30 of the document or 34 of the PDF.
You can get and use windows 11 without logging in with a microsoft account, as of five days ago. I am a local user on my computer. Don't ask me how to do it, because my computer repair guy did it when he reinstalled windows, but there are tutorials out there. Refuse to connect to internet until you're set up and can use the computer freely.
Refusing to connect to the internet doesn't help. You have to open a Command Prompt (Shift+F10) and typing start ms-cxh:localonly (and pressing enter) during installation when you get to the sign in/create stupid ms account screen

If you are interested in disability and theater or creative accomodations in general, I urge you to watch the Hadestown proshot
Not only is it perhaps the best proshot ever made, constructed with the visual language of a concert film in a way that perfectly suits the material, it was filmed while Patrick Page was recovering from an injury that necessitated putting him in a walking boot.
What they've done with it is so perfect for the character that, if you hadn't been told that it was a medical device, it would look like the costume had always had this sick-ass mech boot. I'm not familiar with the exact kind of boot, because it's not shaped like the ones that I've had to use before (having seriously injured the same leg three separate times). Whatever it is forces his heel not to contact the floor, and they've compensated somewhat with a very high heeled dress boot on the other leg.
As you can imagine, because knees exist, it forces him forward, making him move in almost a goat-like way, and it is sheer perfection. The boot is done up with a bunch of sparkly tubes and bullshit that absolutely nail the aesthetic, and it gives him a weird spindly kind of movement that is so incredibly on point for the character. It only underlines his alienation from everyone else, and were it not for the documented history of actors injuring themselves by portraying a disability, looking at you Dear Evan Hansen and basically every production of Richard III, I would say that we should put every Hades in a sick-ass mech boot
This is not the first time that Hadestown West End had injured or disabled cast members, and the way they handled it here it was masterful and really underlines that you can make accommodations and enhance the work

If you don't want your Mullvad fees going to fund neo-Nazis - or @mozilla VPN fees, which is rebranded Mullvad - cancel and get a refund immediately
that's whose "free speech" the official account is talking about here, and that's where your fees go to
EDIT: Mullvad has a 14 day refund policy. But the message below is a direct call to ask for a refund if you don't want to give money to Nazis.
If Mullvad refuse a refund, call your consumer protection agency. And reverse credit card charges on the basis of deceptive refund policy representations. It's not like you ever want to be a Mullvad customer again.

some people have reported being refused refunds that fall outside their 14-day refund window. my sub was 60 days past the payment date, but fwiw I emailed support with my account number and a screenshot of the above mastodon post and explicitly said "In line with your official account's statement, I'd like to request an immediate cancellation and refund on the grounds that I don't share the values of Mullvad or any other company that knowingly profits Nazis. If you're unwilling to issue this refund, please let me know and I'll be happy to escalate the matter to consumer protection." and they issued my refund without a fuss.
