I have so much to do and no amount of coffee can help me now. Will I stop procrastinating? Of course not.

16.10.17 // 5/100 Days of productivity - I had a wonderful morning today, Iâve studied already half of the topics of my first midterm this Friday and Iâm going to the college library this afternoon to keep studying, Iâm feeling great!
Currently conducting a worldwide search for grad school programs and am feeling inexplicably drawn to studying Astrophysics in Chile, even though I neither study physics nor know Spanish. God help me.

Octopus filmed changing colours while sleeping.
i wonder what they are dreaming about
Changing colors duh
Whatâs really cool about this is that cephalopod (octopus, squid, etc.) intelligence evolved completely separately from intelligence in tetrapods (which includes primates, dolphins, crows⌠basically any other intelligent animals you can think of). Cephalopods are very, very far away from us on the tree of life. For context, you and a starfish are more closely related than you and an octopus. The last common ancestor of humans and cephalopods was the so-called Urbilaterian, the hypothetical first animal with a left-right symmetric body. This animal almost certainly had, at most, an extremely simple nervous system, without anything resembling a brain.
All this is to say that the fact that this octopus appears to be dreaming means one of two things. Either
a) dreaming is a very, very old thing indeed, going directly back to the Urbilaterian. This would mean that almost every animal, from insects to starfish to sea slugs to newts, is likely to have the ability to dream in some capacity or another (unless they have specifically lost it by evolutionary simplification).
or
b) dreaming evolved entirely independently in cephalopods when they developed greater intelligence. This would suggest, at least, that thereâs something very fundamental about dreaming related to intelligence itself, which causes it to emerge independently when sufficient intelligence arises.
Needless to say, either of these outcomes would be really very cool.

friends who are thinking about grad school:
be sure youâre passionate about what you want to study, because youâll need a deep love to carry you through an intense program (that can range from 1 year to 7+, depending on what youâre studying) where you will sometimes have some bitter lows
related, donât go to grad school just because the job market blows and youâre not sure what to do. youâre better off taking a couple years to gain experience and skills at a job that you can then transfer to postgrad academic work later
talk to a lot of people before you decide to go somewhere. talk to professors and potential advisors, talk to administrative staff, and try to talk to current or recent students. youâll have a better idea of what itâs like, professional connections for when you start, and possibly new friends
continuing from the above point, donât go to or apply to somewhere where itâs hard to get information about the program or that people arenât responsive. if theyâre not trying to reach out when youâre a potential student, theyâre unlikely to support you once youâre there
be willing to communicate! talk to your advisor and professors if youâre having a hard time or are finding things challenging. if theyâre worth their salt, theyâll help you out and provide solid suggestions.Â
communication is key in classes as well. far more than in undergrad, participation counts. you have to speak up. a large part of grad school is to prepare you for your profession, so you need to be able to contribute to discussions.Â
every minute spent on planning saves you ten minutes spent on execution. short essays probably don't require that much preparation beforehand, but if you're writing something longer you should probably spend some time planning first. this is the process i go through when planning my essays, and i find it works really well!
