balancing school and mental health â¤
something that students know all too well is how difficult it is to find a healthy medium between our own health and working hard in school. as somebody who personally has dealt with multiple mental issues and is still in recovery, i completely understand that sometimes it seems impossible to do both. however!!! it IS possible to maintain good grades and good mental health- itâs just a matter of figuring out what works for you and making your health a priority. i thought iâd compile a list of some of the resources that help me with this, and i hope that they can help some of you!! remember that my messages are always open if you ever need anything, and i believe in you!!! you can do anything you set your mind to and so much more <3
general tips
- get enough sleep: ohmygosh this is so so important. iâve gotten a total of sixteen hours of sleep over the last three days- donât be like me, kiddos. try to get at least eight hours every night!! itâs so much better to sleep and recharge your brain than stay up all night trying to cram in exhaustion
- donât skip meals: no matter how busy you are. i know, it can get so hectic, and sometimes you can be just be too stressed to sit down and eat properly. but ur brain and ur body need food!! itâs gonna fuel you and make you have so much more energy, i promise. breakfast is the most important, but make sure to sit down and eat something nutritious when you get hungry!
- make your bed: honestly this just makes me feel like i have my shit together so much better. plus it stops me from turning into a ball of blankets and taking a 10 hour depression nap (but!!!! if you really need to sleep please do!!!!)
- write. down. everything: plan, plan, plan. itâs clichĂŠ but seriously, just do it. it can help you feel more pulled together, more in control, and give you a way to visualize what needs to get done. itâll also help you to remember everything you have to do! this is the other way i feel like my have my shit together
- stay hydrated: another clichĂŠ but!!!! essential!!!!!! itâs good for ur skin, good for ur brain, and can almost instantly make you feel better. keep a drink of water near you and sip on it from time to time!
- be gentle with yourself: things didnât go as planned??? thatâs perfectly okay youâre human and we all make mistakes sometimes. bad days happen. take a deep breath, take care of yourself, and trust that things will turn out okay. i believe in u friend!!!

~ FLAT MESS TO FAB FROÂ : How I take care of my hair
                04/07/2014 ⺠07/30/2015
Finallyyyyy ! A post about -almost- everything about my hair ! In this post, youâll be able to know the phases Iâve been through to get my hair all healthy, then my hair routine/hair regimen.
1 â Going Natural
I used to hate my curly hair, like most of curly girls I would say. My cousin offered me a straightener for my 14th birthday and made me swear to use it for special events only. It was the case, though. Iâve used it for my birthday, it was my first time ever seeing my hair all straight and flat like pastas. But, people at school were complimenting me on my long straight dark hair, saying how much I look better. These same people used to bully me because of my natural curly hair, and the fact that I was half Black (it was a catholic school where I was the only ÂŤÂ person of colour ), but thatâs another story. I was so happy to receive COMPLIMENTS from people who were hating on me since day one, to see these White boys trying to approach me in a seducing way and all, asking me to hang outâŚyou know, that I began to straighten my hair once to twice a week.
Weâve moved to another city, a bigger city in fact where there were much more diversity. But, every Black or Mixed girl was straightening/relaxing their hair, wearing straight weave.
I graduated to High School. Unfortunetely, it was a little High School -but its reputation was really good-. One more time, I was one of the rare coloured person. During my first year, I realised that my hair was damaged. But I wouldnât let my curls take a rest. Iâve cut my hair -not that much comparing to my big chop-, it was my first time ever cutting my hair. My hair was wayyyy more healthier, but I couldnât let my curls appear.
Finally, I was 16, I began to be more curious about things that were surrounding me. I began to be curious about my African side, that Iâve always wanted to deny. Iâve fallen in love with my own culture, and since that moment I started to embrace my Black features more than ever. I decided to stop using my straightener during Summer 2013. But it was too late, my hair was fried to the max. My hair was kind of straight, but in a really mysterious way ⌠my curls were non-existent, my hair was flat, wavish, my ends were horrible. I realised the impact of 2 years of trying to hide my beautiful curls. I didnât know what to do! I didnât know how to take care of that mess that was on my head ! Then, back to school, I wanted to get a pixie haircut in order to start all over again. I couldnât trust the hairdressers of my city; they were White, and didnât know anything about Afro Hair. Everytime I would visit one of them, I could see their faces looking at my hair like âhow am I supposed to style that shit ?â, literally. Nobody in my family wanted to cut my hair, saying how I will regret it after. I started to transition SERIOUSLY; I was doing homemade protein masks once a week, then I was using the Hair Mayonnaise which was awesome on my poor curls who were struggling to pop. I was using a really special technique to curl my hair while transitionning. I was using a handband, placing it on my head, and I would just wrap my hair arround it. If you want to try it, you should be able to find loads of tutorials on YouTube. The results went quickly, I was really happy. But not as quickly as I wanted. In February 2014, I decided to pass the step of the big chop, finally ! I just took my pair of scissors and cut my hair quite randomly to be honest, hopefully the shape was pretty nice ! I went to my bathroom to wash my hair⌠right after, my curls were popping like ⌠damn ! I was so surprised, I didnât even know my âreal curlsâ were looking like that, even though they were a little weak and not as tight as now. At this point, I was altering between protein and moisture. But my hair was so short, I was too ⌠âshyâ⌠to appear with my hair down in public. It was still pretty flat, but my curls were alive and almost healthy ! I was always wearing various protective styles, except the week-end. Until July, my hair has grown and was easier to âassumeâ, if you want to. Plus, my curls were tighter. In August, my hair was completely healthy, and beautifuuuul. I was so happy. Since August, Iâm just letting my hair grow. But, as you can see, I donât have that much tips for my ladies who are transitionning. I was just waiting mostly, using some proteine and moisture, but thatâs all.
By the way, I really advise you to take pictures every month to really see your evolution. It helps a lot because sometimes we have the impression that there is no evolution but when you look at your pictures you see how far youâve come !
The story of my hair in some pictures here.
2 â Taking Care Of My Hair
I donât know where to start so Iâll follow my instinct⌠sorry if itâs a little messy. Lol.
⢠What I do monthly :
â Masks targetting protein or moisture : I make my masks. I donât buy them. Except for the Hair Mayonnaise that I was using while transitionning but I donât use it anymore. I just use 2 eggs or Avocado with Olive Oil to do my protein mask. When it comes to the moisture, I use Yogurt, Olive Oil and drops of Lemon Juice to make my hair shines. I put a plastic bag on my head, with 2 beanies (LOL yeah I look really ridiculous when doing that) to assures some heat and make my hair infuse all the good nutriments. When itâs time to wash my hair, I do it with cold water. When there is nothing left on my hair, I rince my hair using Mineral Water with 1 or 2 tablespoon of Vinegar Cidar. Your hair may smell a little, but when youâll use your products after the smell will be gone.
â Trimming my hair : Well, I donât do it monthly. I do it between 2 to 4 months. When I feel the need to, to be honest. Iâm so lazy when it comes to do that. Personally, I love to twist my hair with some Coconut Oil on my hands and cut the end, which should be âthinerâ.
â Cleaning my scalp : At the end of the month, I like to massage my scalp with Coconut Oil, to remove all the dirt on my scalp (and itâs also soooo relaxing). After that, I shampoo my hair using the Shampoing Sunshine Clean Citron Grenade by Les Secrets De Loly, I stay a long time massaging my scalp again before focusing on my hair to remove all the products that it could have accumulate during the month. After that, your hair and your scalp is all pure and ready for another month !
⢠What I do weekly :
â Co-washing : I co-wash once to twice a week. Iâve just remarked that I tend to wash my hair more on Sunday and Wednesday. But, sometimes I do it another day, depending on the circumstances. I usually do it the evening, so I can let my hair airdry and pineapple it to stretch it, and be ready the next morning. Thatâs the best option for me, personally. I donât wash my hair and my body at the same time. I start with my hair. I just bend over my bathtub, so my head is âreversedâ (I do the same thing when I wash my mask, by the way). I do this because I want to avoid having spots on my back, because the products you use stay on your skin and the back is the space I tend to forget sometimes while taking a shower. I donât touch my hair, I donât try to detangle them before applying the Too Shea! Conditionner from Jessicurl. I let the products on my hair for few minutes before detangling my hair using my fingers, simply, or a wide tooth comb when I find it, lol. I rince with cold water. Then, I crunch my hair and put a t-shirt as a turban on my head. I let my hair dry a little in it, so during that time I can wash my body, wash my face, do my make up, put my clothes⌠After that, I can apply my Lait Capillaire âLitchi-MĂťreâ by Les Secrets De Loly, a little bit of Confident Coils blended with Rockin Ringlets, both from Jessicurl, and seal everything with some Oil (Almond, Olive, Jojoba or Argan, it depends of my mood, lol). Then, I let it airdry. When my hair is like 90% I like to use a blowdryer (not hot) while shaking my head, to not have my roots âstuckâ to my scalp, and encourage the volume of my hair. After that, I can use a pick and comb through my roots to maximise the volume. Et voilĂ !
⢠What I do everyday :
â Peanappling my hair before sleeping : This is my technique to sleep while not crunching my poor curls against my pillows, since I move a lot when I sleep. I just take a satin scarf that I wrap arround my head and I tie it on the front. I helps stretching my hair, and the next morning my hair is longer and even bigger !
â Refreshing my fro : After the night, comes the morning, when your fro has been enduring all your movements during the night. To refresh my fro, all I do is putting some cold water on my hands, then I -kind of- massage my scalp. After that, my hands still a little wet so I take advantage of that to reshape quickly my fro and the wild curls. Finally, I put some moisture back on my hair, but not too much because I donât want the products to weight down on my hair. I spray my hair with cold water lightly, I put my Lait Capillaire âLitchi-MĂťreâ by Les Secrets De Loly and my favourite oil in my fro, especially the âouterâ curls which tends to be drier than the rest.
Hope I didnât forget anything ⌠I hope it was clear too !
Bisous ! :-*

Hoe Tips: School and Studying
Iâm currently in PA school with close to a 4.0 GPA, and with college and back to school starting up, Iâm dropping some tips for y'all. A hoe gotta get bomb ass grades if ya want a bomb ass career and to be successful af. So letâs get itâ¨
1. Write out your notes. Have two notebooks: one for when youâre in class (this one can be messy) and one for at home (this one is the neater one, for color coding, formatting, and all that organizational jazz). Writing things out is proven to enhance memorization 7X more than just reading is.
2. Have a go-to format for your notes. Numbering, bullet points, whatever floats your boat.
3. Type out your notes. I use Google Drive, because it automatically saves all your shit, and you can access your notes via your Google account literally anywhere. Typing out your notes does the same thing writing them out does, as far as helping you review the material.
4. Use Quizlet. Quizlet is a free flashcard website/app that allows you to type in all of your flashcards and definitions, and gives you review options like matching, testing, flashcard mode, and more. This shit made me my high schools valedictorian, no lie.
5. Keep your old quizzes and tests. Often times, teachers will ask similar questions on finals.
6. For math-based subjects, always always always show your work in your notes. I try to explain each step for a math problem in the margins of my notes, and generalize how to do each problem at the end.
7. Do practice problems consistently.
8. For my college hoes: never take an 8 am class. You think you can do it because you did it for high school, but I promise you will regret it. If thereâs no avoiding the 8 am lecture, bring coffee and skip any makeup/hair that day. Sleep is too important.
9. Make flashcards. The night before my exams, I like to try and fit everything I need to know for a specific chapter/topic onto one flashcard, in order to weed out main ideas.
10. For essays, easybib.com is amazing with free citations to avoid any plaigiarism or incorrect bibliographies.
11. Rentđyourđtextbooksđ. Unless your teacher specifically requires you BUY it, you likely wonât need the actual textbook. Buying access codes for the book online is hundreds of dollars cheaper.
12. If you do get your textbooks, a lot of them have chapter summaries at the end of each chapter. Be sure to write out/type out/review those summaries.
13. For science labs, if you are allowed, take pictures of any models or slides you need to know for your exams. Pretty much all labs wonât let you take pictures of cadavers or animal dissections, but plastic models and microscope slides should be fine.
14. If you have a question, ASK YOUR TEACHER. It is better to look stupid in class and get your clarification, than to look stupid when you get your exam back and actually have it count against your grade.
15. Do study groups. I have two nursing friends in some of the same classes as me, and weâd always meet up before exams to go over the material. We would bring dry erase markers and map out shit in empty classrooms, taking turns explaining shit to each other until we nailed it.
16. Try to teach the material. Like I said in #15, study groups are great for this. By teaching the material out loud, you are subconsciously reviewing it yourself. This is a HUGE help.
17. Take breaks. You cannot exhaust yourself and expect to still recall anything you learned.
18. I know everyone does this and thereâs no avoiding it sometimes, but DO NOT CRAM. Gradual learning is most effective.
19. Have one day every week where you donât do any schoolwork. You need time to reboot.
20. Use your phoneâs calendar/task checklist app for all major assignments, due dates, exam dates, study plans, appointments, etc. Set reminders as needed.
21. Charge your phone in another room while studying. No distractions.
22. Rainymood.com is a free website that plays a 30 minute loop of rain sounds. It helps me focus like nothing else, especially in my loud ass household, and every time the loop stops and replays, I know to take a break between 30 minute study sessions.
23. Feel distracted at home when studying? Try studying in a library, cafe, or even at school. I find that going somewhere else to study actually forces me to pay attention to what Iâm doing, for some reason.
24. Reward yourself for good grades. Buy yourself a slice of pizza or a new highlight, have a netflix marathon, go to a party, or take a nap. Whatever conveys a job well done, do it. Itâll make all that studying feel that much greater when itâs over, and youâll have a goal to work towards.
25. Sit in the front of the classroom as often as possible. Youâll be forced to pay attention, be able to actually see the board, hear the instructor better, and youâre more likely to have your questions answered quickly because your teacher will actually see your hand go up.
26. Caffeinate. I prefer tea because itâs healthier, but coffee works too. Ya girl is NOT a morning person, but my morning tea at least helps me pay attention during earlier classes.
27. Keep all of your school shit organized, together, and labelled.
28. Do NOT skip a class just because youâre lazy or donât feel like going. The temptation is real sometimes, but a hoes gonna be pissed when ya see your participation average decline.
29. This may just be a psychological thing, but I love to use the same colored/brand of pen for all of my notes/assignments/tests. It just makes everything seem more uniform, and Iâm able to recall information better.
30. Trouble taking tests? For any multiple choice question, read the question and try to answer it first without reading any of the options. If your answer doesnât match the options, then use process of elimination to find the best answer. For true/false questions, write out justifications for each answer (you can also do this for multiple choice). Youâll be acing your exams in no time.
31. Chewing gum during class/studying, and chewing that same flavor gum during the exam, has been scientifically proven to boost your memory recall.
32. Literally any time you have the opportunity to do extra credit, DO IT. Cherish that shit.
33. If you arenât doing so hot in a particular class (literally any math class for me lol), schedule a private meeting with your professor and go over test questions you missed, or topics you didnât get. If you know your professor is a flop, or canât get an appointment, meet with a tutor or another professor of that same subject. Sometimes another voice can shed new light on a difficult topic.
34. For essays, readable.io critiques your writing for free based on readability, grade level, formality, tone, grammatical errors, etc. Seriously a life saver.
35. Also thesaurus.com is ya bff for fancier words/phrases to make your writing more eloquent
36. Always make an outline for every essay or project to organize what you want to say. This will keep you on track, and help you work around any quotes or sources in you writing to make sure your writing is hella organized.
Thatâs all I can think of for now, please please please feel free to add and share. Enjoy those 4.0âs, hoesđ
Weâre already halfway the first semester, I canât believe how fast everything is going⌠I really need some more time! These pictures are from my instagram elienstudies

hey, guys! so itâs thanksgiving break, and i have loads of work to do, but iâve been feeling super unmotivated, so i thought iâd make this masterpost for personal reference and to help you guys out!
// TIPS TO GET MOTIVATED //
have a list of people and/or goals that motivate you
this can be famous people, role models, family members, things youâre working for, where you want to be in five years, a job/grade you want, etc.
listen to uplifting music while you work
i really love listening to rap music, especially drake
however, if music with lyrics is distracting to you, look up some fast-paced instrumentals
study in chunks of time, and make sure to take frequent breaks
one way to do this is to use the pomodoro method (see this masterpost on the pomodoro method + a printable for using it by @educatier)
this helps to prevent burnout, and it keeps you fresh and feeling motivated to continue!!!
have a snack with you while working/studying!!!
this helps me so much
need i explain more??? food makes everything better
have a reward system
come up with a reward system for every goal you accomplish, or for an assignment you complete, or for a certain amount of time youâve been working for
some ideas for rewards are watching an episode of your favorite show on netflix, getting more food, buying something for yourself, taking a quick nap, etc.
