imagine it’s the beach trip in book 3 and the weather is perfect. it isn’t as hot as it was back in june, and jeremy actually convinces jean to be his partner for beach volleyball. jean is quick to learn the rules and with his height and jeremy’s quick footwork, the pair absolutely dominate. each time jean makes a particularly impressive move, or just when jeremy is feeling extra giddy, he runs to jean and offers both his palms in a double high-five. the first time jean is a little hesitant, but he complies. the second and third times, he’s less awkward and almost manages a small smile. almost. their friends are hooting and hollering as they go thru pair after pair of their fellow trojans, jab barking excitedly and happy just to be there. then it’s derek and derrick’s turn and things get tougher but jerejean still manage to pull off a few risky moves and gain yet another triumphant win together and it’s derrick whose ass they just whipped, so naturally jean is feeling extra proud. he steps halfway to meet jeremy and puts his hands up first, keeping them a little lower so jeremy can reach them easier and jeremy can’t help but stare up at his french partner with curious brown eyes that shine in the sun and a slight gasp on his lips. jeremy takes note of the red skin on jean’s cheek bones and blames it on the lack of sunscreen, and he beams as he smacks jean’s hands and proudly asks “ready for the next suckers?” to which jean nods and says “yes” without hesitation. finally min ends up on xavier’s shoulders as a third ‘player’ because the team is determined to beat the dream-duo that is jeremy and jean, but even with a cheap loophole no one manages. the high fives continue and at one point jean even squeezes his hand down on jeremy’s shoulder and jeremy is radiating with a warmth that jean is so happy to see. the day ends with cat insisting on snapping a photo of the two dynamite exy and beach volleyball players together. jeremy and jean stand side-by-side, arms brushing as jeremy holds up jab and flashes his beautiful dimpled smile and jean holds up the ball they’d been using to cream their friends all afternoon, looking relaxed and at peace. the ocean makes a wonderful backdrop and as soon as she’s able, cat gets the photo printed and it becomes the first picture that jean frames and hangs on his wall. it is like the photo of rhemann and adi and the little fish on a boat at sea, but it is not; it is himself and jeremy, and their little dog, and they already look like a couple despite having yet to confess to each other. it is a promise of a beautiful future to come, though jean won’t know that quiet yet. but maybe he hopes.

It’s so funny to me that Jean uses his lack of English proficiency as an excuse but then his inner monologue is using words like malcontent and cretin. Like the only thing that man is fluent in is being a straight up hater.
