Y’know, there’s always been this thing I’ve had about the part in the series when they bring up that students can’t use magic in the muggle world in order to protect the secrecy of the wizarding one. And that was; what, if muggle-borns aren’t expected to use magic in those cases, is preventing Hogwarts from having a muggle defense class?A.K.A. Martial Arts? They already have Defense Against The Dark Arts, so clearly the wizarding community isn’t against self defense in the general sense. Now obviously, before the events of the actual series proper there are some pretty obvious roadblocks to having such a class in the school, such as pure blood resistance and bureaucracy on the Hogwarts school board. (I hardly think that Lucius Malfoy would allow his son to be anywhere near such influences.) (Course that just makes you wonder what the fight for the muggle studies budget to stay in place looked like every year.) But after The Battle of Hogwarts? Who honestly can’t see a group of muggle-borns coming in with the older sibling of a witch or wizard. A royal marine instructor. Someone who can teach the students how to take care of themselves without resorting to .magic, except as a last resort. Class is entirely voluntary, except perhaps for first years as a form of introduction and exercise,(something a surprisingly large number of wizards appear to ignore unless they play quidditch, ) and thus students no longer have to worry about being attacked by muggles nearly as much. And then just imagine this. The first year that the muggle defense teacher comes to Hogwarts. Everyone staring as he/she comes through the door, tall, military in stance, tough and without pretense. And then a few of the pure bloods start muttering about the standards of the school going to the dogs, and for the first few days the teacher gets pranked in various ways by students until he gets to the actual day of the first class. And is challenged to a duel by an upstart pure blood second year with a chip on his shoulder. And so the instructor calmly, and efficiently disarms and knocks the kid down on his butt. Afterwards everyone wants to take the class. Slytherins see the defense as yet another way to attain glory, suddenly there are some pretty jacked students running around. Every once in a while someone takes a strength increasing potion, thinking it will help them win against the professor, but skill outdoes brawn any day. Even when one 6th year gets ahold of the Felix felicis potion they lose. Again because skill will always trump luck. The teacher becomes a legend. And eventually, a favorite among the entire student body.
