STAN THE MAN!

he feels weird staring at this stranger. he’s just moved into the city and he’s at a bakery to see if their coffee is even remotely decent and there’s this curly haired man in front of him and he just looks so familiar. he hears the other give his name as he orders his coffee and ryan is still staring. STAN ? did he know a stan ?

after ordering his own coffee, ryan moves to stand next to the other who is waiting for his coffee. “ i’m so sorry to bother you, “ he finally says, looking over at stan. “ i just —-  i feel like i know you from somewhere ? “ usually he’s the one who hears that, with his career and all, but this man and his curls and ryan is just looking for an answer.

          his  head  is  turned  politely  downward,  stan  knows  he’s  a  regular  here,  as  he  makes  casual  conversation  with  the  barista  who  normally  serves  him.   they  laugh  together  over  a  shared  joke,  but  she  nods  in  such  a  way  that  she’s  saying  ‘  someone’s  checking  you  out.  ’   which  she  always  does,  and  stan  never  believes  her.   he  also  never  approaches  whatever  poor  soul  is  or  isn’t  checking  him  out,  which  always  disappoints  her,  but  what  else  can  he  do?

the  heart  monitor  is  slow  but  functioning  and  beverly  thinks  she  can  feel  her  fingers  moving  against  the softness  of  blanket,  the  smell  of  lemon  hits  her  and  her  hazle  eyes  slowly  open  now,  remembering  what  her  mother’s  hospital  room  smelled  like  many  years  ago. as  her  body  slowly  arouses  from  the  sleepy  state  her  green  eyes  travel  the  room  until  she  sees  familiar  brown  curls  resting at  her  bedside  and  she  realizes  stan  is  in  the  chair  next  to  her. beverly  just  doesn’t  know  how  to  feel  right  now,  she  is  slightly  embarrassed  she  has  been  taken  to  the  hospital,  still  upset  by  her  father’s  abuse,  her  head  is  burning  with  an  oncoming  migraine  and  she  realizes  how  sore  and  hurt  she  is  when  she  tries  to  move,  both  physical  and  mental  state  could  be  described  as  exhausted.  she  notes  how  her   cheek  feels  numb  and  she  swears  she  still  tastes  the  blood  from  last  night  but  she  knows  it  can’t  be  there,  the  doctor  patched  her  up. the  doctor  must  have  really  patched  her  up,  stitches  and  all,  and  she  suddenly  feels  a  rush  of  shame  go  through  her,  all  she  wished  to  forget  is  coming  back  in  waves  in  her  mind  and  she  stares  blankly  at  the  floor.  “  stanley?.  “  beverly  whispers,  tires  to  hold  onto  the  present,  and  it  hurt  to  even  talk,  was  she  imagining  things  or  was  he  actually  there,  the  sun  made  the  room  ten  times  brighter  and  she  weakly  covers  her  injured  face,   did  she  have  stitches  in  her  mouth? “  you  ungrateful  bitch!  “  her  mind  screams  at  her  in  her  father’s  shrill  voice  and  the  rest  goes  black,  slammed  headfirst  into  the  wall,  her  ears  ringing,  he  usually  stopped  after  one  hit,  there  was  no  stopping  right  now,  each  hit  sent  a  mark  of  pain  down  her  spine  and  she  can  taste  the  blood  so  clearly  in  her  mouth. this  isn’t  a  place  she  wants  to  go  to  right  now  though,  green  eyes  furiously  blink  to  get  out  that  image  of  her  dad’s  face  and  alcoholic  breath   above  her. his  slimy  hands  on  her  skin,  beating  it  to  a  pulp,  she  tried  to  fight  back,  she  tried.  now  she  ended  up  here  in  the  hospital  and  stanely  waiting  by  her  bedside,  tears  form  in  her  eyes  and  she  is  rather  relieved  to  see  him  even  if  it  was  in  such  a  vulnerable  state.

          he’s  sleepy,  easily  evidenced  by  his  head  gently  resting  beside  her  hand  on  the  best.   the  second  he’d  heard  about  beverly  being  put  in  the  hospital,  he’d  picked  up  his  bag,  gotten  on  his  bike,  and  cycled  up.   he’d  been  told  to  wait  outside  ‘til  she’d  gotten  out  of  surgery,  but  once  that  had  finished  up,  he  was  allowed  to  slip  in.   he  doesn’t  know  how  much  time  has  gone  by,  but  every  second  of  looking  at  her  beaten  face,  the  bruises  that  marked  her-  well,  stan  could  feel  the  worry  well  up  within  him,  but  what  could  he  do?
