For Unwrittenmusingsā Rosvolio Wedding Challenge! I choseĀ āWe need to stop meeting at weddings that arenāt even oursā Thank you for this challenge! Ao3
Isabella and Helena
Rosaline would like the record to state that anyone still recovering from a breakup with the person you thought you were going to marry, and being flirted with by Benvolio Montague in a perfectly fitted suitĀ suit would end up in the same situation.Ā
Most people probably wouldnāt even need the breakup to end up in the same situation, but seeing as the entire thing happened because she was at the wedding of her exās sister, Rosaline thinks it should be added to the list of reasons sheās collecting to defend herself.Ā
Not that she has to defend herself to anyone.
Except maybe herself.Ā
Benvolioās lips move from hers and start making their way down her throat, his hand sliding dangerously along the zipper of her dress.Ā
And god, this might just be the most undignified thing sheās ever done. Sheās at a wedding, a black tie wedding at that, her very best friendās wedding, and sheās about to hook up with a man in the bathroom. A Montague of all people. But she does not want him to stop.Ā
Rosaline had been sitting at the bar, watching Isabella and Helena spinning each other around for their first dance, trying her damnedest to be happy. Isabella was happy. Helena was amazing. Ever since they were 13 and Isabella told her that she might like girls, this is what Rosaline had been hoping Isabella would find. A beautiful wife and happiness, and the most perfect wedding to probably ever grace Verona.
And two weeks ago, thatās what it was.Ā
And then Escalus broke up with her out of the blue, and Rosaline would not - could not - talk to Isabella about it, she couldnāt risk the possibility of messing up anything about this wedding, so she was at the bar, avoiding the brideās brother as best as she could, trying to not let her sour mood seep into the air, when he sat next to her.
Benvolio Montague.Ā
Family rival and Veronaās number one heartbreak three years running.Ā

Benvolio shakes his head.Ā āIām notĀ jealous.ā Crossing his arms over his chest, he studies the pot boiling behind his girlfriend.Ā āIām not.ā
He might be pouting.
āOkay,ā says Rosaline, stepping around Benvolio to grab a plate from the cabinet behind him.Ā āLetās say I believe you. Then you have no problem with Liv and Jules and I hanging out at the bar tonight.ā
Benvolio straightens.Ā āI have no problem with you hanging out at the bar.ā
āDuring Escalusā shift.ā
āEspeciallyĀ during Escalusā shift.ā
āAnd if Romeo and Mercutio happenĀ to be there too - ā
āNow thatās just not fair,ā whines Benvolio, throwing his arms up in the air. Rosaline probably laughs at him.Ā āIām stuck at a stupid training and you all get to - ā
Rosaline kisses him quiet, grinning.Ā āDonāt worry, we wouldnāt dream of leaving out the birthday boy in his own festivities. Weāll wait until youāre done.ā
Curling his arm around her waist, he pulls her closer. Burying his nose in her neck, he growls.Ā āYou better.ā

Thank god for callbacks, Rosaline thought. If Mercutio hadnāt gotten that callback for Strangers in Stone, sheād be in a much more depressing situation this Saturday night. Thankfully, Mercutio had felt in the mood to celebrate so instead of eating a tub of cookie-dough ice cream and ranting on the phone to poor Livia for hours, she was twirling in the middle of the dance floor with Merc right by her side.
Still Star Crossed anniversary, writing prompt for June 2nd: āHell is Empty and All the Devils Are Hereā:
Itās a story you havenāt seen on tv before: Girl meets Boy. Girl hates Boy. Girl and Boy infiltrate the most popular reality dating show on television to expose its unethical treatment of contestants⦠And suddenly, the lines begin to blur between the sparks flying on screen - and the real thing that grows when the cameras stop rolling.

He was not ashamed to dance like an idiot and Rosaline felt herself give in to that urge as well. Merc was especially a fan of spinning her around and dramatically dipping her-perhaps heād done it too many times, but Rosaline didnāt mind in the slightest.
āCapulet, keep up with me here!ā Mercutio joked when she stumbled after one especially ambitious dip. Ā
Rosaline opened her mouth to yell a smart response back but was cut off when she heard the intro to the greatest song of all time.
āSingle Ladies!ā her and Mercutio screamed simultaneously.
As Rosaline took a sip of her drink, she wondered where the Montague had wandered off to. She was aware he too was in desperate need of a distraction after losing his bartending job a few days ago. She genuinely felt bad for him. Benvolioās first few months of freedom from Damiano werenāt going as smoothly as he had so obviously hoped.
Rosaline almost spilled her drink when she felt a rough hand on her shoulder. She tensed and fixed her mouth to tell whoever it was that she wasnāt interested, but she stopped when she recognized those stormy eyes.
Benvolioās white V-neck was now darkened with sweat and his damp hair was sticking to his forehead. He seemingly had lost his grumpy outlook from earlier and switched it out for being blissfully drunk if the slanted smile on his face was anything to go by. Rosaline had never seen the Montague smile so widely in her life. And if the sight of his goofy smile made her return an equally giddy one, then sheād blame the alcohol. Ā
āCapulet, I didnāt know you had moves like that!ā Benvolio yelled with unwarranted glee.
Heās definitely drunk, Rosaline concluded. She felt a surge of excitement run through her. Any opportunity to see Benvolio possibly embarrass himself was a welcome one indeed.
Benvolio nodded much too enthusiastically and then attempted to sit on the stool next to her-he barely managed it without falling over.
āAlways surprising me,ā he muttered under his breath as he finally got settled.
Rosaline rolled her eyes at the backhanded compliment. Before she could ask Benvolio where he had seen her dancing, she felt her phone buzz through her back pocket. Icy dread zipped through her at the sound. She proceeded to slowly pull the phone out, praying it wasnāt who she thought it was.
Rosalineās heart sank when she read the contact name. Escalus.
Escalus Princeton:
Ros please, letās talk about this.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Another buzz.
Escalus Princeton:
Iām not ashamed of you.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā And another.
Escalus Princeton:
Please call me back.
Rosaline almost slammed her phone down on the bar table top out of her frustration. She groaned and put her head in her hands.
She had told Escalus, to his face, that she needed a break from him. That she needed to clear her head. And does he respect her wishes? No. He does the exact opposite. Of course, that was always the problem with Escalus. He didnāt care too much about what she wanted.
Rosaline banged her head on the table in her anguish, eliciting an equally worried and confused sound from Benvolio.
āItās Escalus,ā she explained, lifting her head up to face Benvolio.
Benvolio squinted and then lazily swiped his hands through the air, as if the motion itself could get rid of her problems.
āCapulet, this is no time for dwelling on our issues,ā he said, leaning so close she could smell the tequila on him. āTonight, we donāt get sad because we canāt hold down a job! We donāt even pout because our shitty exes wonāt leave us the hell alone! Tonight, we only do one thing!ā
Usually Rosaline would be unamused by Benvolioās lectures, but right now he was painfully drunk which made it much more tolerable, if not outright hilarious, so she played along.
Rosaline raised her eyebrows, prompting his response.
āAnd what is that?ā
āWe celebrate the renowned career of Mercutio!ā
Rosaline laughed and rolled her eyes. Ben had a point. She had said she didnāt want to think about her and Escalus.
So, she wonāt. Sheāll celebrate her friendās accomplishment instead (even though she hadnāt seen Mercutio for almost the last hour and usually if you lose Merc for that long, you wonāt see him again till the morning.)
Rosaline gave Benvolio a pat on the back for his passionate-yet-plastered speech and called for the bartender.
ā2 Mind Eraser shots, please!ā she said.
Benvolio gave her an amused look, his eyes widening in surprise at the bold order.
āSeemed appropriate for tonight,ā she said with a shrug.
The bartender returned shortly with the drinks and Rosaline slid one over to Benvolio.
She raised her glass in the air and ignored Benvolioās scoff. āTo Mercutio!ā
Benvolio picked up his glass and knocked it against hers with a satisfying clink.
āThe greatest actor of our generation!ā Benvolio conceded with a proud grin.
Rosaline didnāt know much right now. She didnāt know where Mercutio had snuck off to during the party. She didnāt know what time it was. Or where sheād left her heels.
She did know that she had crossed the point of slightly tipsy and made it over to kinda drunk. And that she and Ben were one of the few people in attendance at a run-down karaoke joint called Beats and Eats. The whys and hows of this situation still escaped her.
Her and Benvolio sat at a small table near the sadly decorated stage. A few flimsy pink streamers were draped over it, with a dimly lit neon sign that read āGroovyā hanged on the back wall. The place was relatively quiet for a karaoke bar, and it looked like no one had any plans to sing anytime soon.
Rosaline tore her eyes from the drab appearance of the stage towards Ben who had an absent smile on his face.
āBenvolio Montague,ā Rosaline drawled out, with her head in her hands. She had barely finished saying his name before he began to break out into giggles, even though she wasnāt sure what was so funny.
Still, Benvolio grinned happily back at her, as if his name was truly the funniest joke heād ever heard. It was endearing really. His shirt was rumpled, and his hair was curling up every which way. Usually, he was an irritable mess. Now he was just an adorable one.
āRosaline Capulet?ā Benvolio replied. He laughed, and the warm sound traveled straight down Rosalineās spine.
Man. She was really starting to feel those few shots.
āI dare you to go up there and sing me a song,ā she said, jutting her chin towards the stage. āIām tired of singing for you and Merc all the time. Your turn, Montague.ā
She expected a funny quip back but was instead given a slow nod.
āOkay,ā Ben said simply as he got out of his chair. āCapulet, I may end up giving you a run for your money. That 8 pm Music Monday slot at Sharaās Coffee might just be mine soon.ā
Well someoneās confident, Rosaline thought while Benvolio made his way to the stage.
Ben grabbed the mic too forcefully, causing a ringing sound to echo in the room. The sharp noise made Rosaline cringe and a few customers spewed some choice words.
He looked around meekly and whispered a sorry into the mic, making Rosaline chuckle.
She threw him a thumbs up for encouragement. He was off to a great start.
Ben smiled back at her, suddenly reassured, before heading over to the machine to select his song. He quickly picked one with the press of a button and turned back to face the small crowd.
āThis is a little throwback for you, Capulet,ā Benvolio said as he returned to the center of the stage. Ā He had a sly look on his face. A look Rosaline had seen many times in the past, usually right before pulling some elaborate prank with Romeo and Mercutio. That couldnāt be a good sign. Rosaline braced herself for the stupidity.
A few light notes began to play out of the speaker before Rosalineās face soured with recognition. Benvolio saw her realization and nodded his head slowly, his smile grew impossibly wider.
She flipped him off. Ben laughed. Then he put his mouth much too close to the mic and began to sing:
Beauty queen of only eighteen, she had some trouble with herself
He was always there to help her, she always belonged to someone else
He began passionately pointing his finger at her while he sang the bridge:
I drove for miles and miles and wound up at your door
I've had you so many times, but somehow, I want more!
āI hate you,ā she mouthed to Benvolio as he continued to sing horribly off key.
He lamely played the air-drums and spun around as he moved into the train wreck of a chorus that Rosaline knew was coming:
I donāt mind spending everyday
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Out on your corner in the pouring rain!
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Look for the girl with the broken smile
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ask her if she wants to stay awhile.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā And she will be loved!
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā And she will be loved!
Benvolio continued to sing without a care in the world (or any regard for hitting the notes). He danced off the stage to get closer to Rosaline. He was put to a stop though when the short cord to the microphone yanked him back, almost making him fall. Rosalineās annoyance subsided immediately, and she threw head back, laughing loudly at his failure.
Benvolio himself began cracking up, barely managing to get out the words anymore. He bent over with his hands on his knees trying to catch his breath and sing at the same time. The song was ending by the time Benvolio sobered up.
The 3 other people in the bar clapped hesitantly, most likely confused by what theyād just witnessed. Rosaline didnāt blame them. That didnāt stop her from clapping and cheering as loudly as possible though.
Benvolio took an exaggerated bow and put the mic back on the stand. He jumped down from the stage, holding his arms out to Rosaline, silently asking how heād done.
Rosaline answered him by getting up and walking towards the exit.
āThank you, Benvolio,ā she said. She looked at him over her shoulder as she headed out the door. āFor making it very clear that you never let anything go and that we need to find an Uber.ā
āSo, I was that bad, huh?ā he asked. His face showed no signs of shame though. His mouth was curled up in a bright smile, a playful look in his eyes. Rosalineās heart beat a little bit faster when she noticed a small dimple in his cheek form.
They made their way outside. Ben rested his head on Rosalineās shoulder as they waited on the curb. She didnāt bother pushing him off. It was cold. She needed the warmth.
The Uber arrived a few minutes later and they both crawled in the back. She found herself pressed up against his side, not an inch of space between them. Neither one of them made any move to scoot over.
Ben gave the driver their address and moved his head to look out the window at the city lights. Rosaline also found herself turning her head in that direction, but she wasnāt looking at the lights. Rather, she was looking at how the lights looked while they shined on Benās face. The angle of his jaw and purse of his lips in glowing pinks and oranges sent a shiver through her. The word beautiful sat on Rosalineās tongue but it felt wrong to say out loud. This was Benvolio Montague she was talking about.
Itās not that Rosaline wasnāt aware Ben was good looking. She had seen him charm too many girls for her to be that obtuse. Sheād even caught herself admiring him herself in high school in those fleeting moments they were alone. But that was so long ago. And this feltā¦different. Ā
Rosaline wouldāve blamed it all on the alcohol if she wasnāt so sure that she was sobering up right now. And she also couldnāt deny that tonight had been fun- and it was mainly because Benvolio was there with her.
Benvolio let the driver know they were coming up on their apartment. Rosaline tried to get control of her wandering thoughts. It was late, and she was tired. She just needed to get to bed.
They thanked the driver and entered the building. Rosaline climbed the steps in silence, unsure of what would happen if she let herself speak.
Finally, they reached their floor. Rosaline walked to her door and made to grab her keys but stopped when she felt Benvolioās hand on hers.
āRosaline,ā he said. His voice was the quietest it had been all night. āThank you. For tonight. I know Iām not your first choice for someone to hang out with, butā¦ā
He shook his head and didnāt finish his sentence. He scratched the back of his neck and licked his lips. She desperately tried to keep her eyes on his.
āThank you for being my friend tonight,ā he finally said. His eyes were full of sincerity that made her chest ache.
āThank you for being mine,ā she whispered back. She suddenly realized how close they had gotten. So close she could feel him exhale as her eyes betrayed her and fluttered to his lips.
A surge of pure want ran through Rosaline as she surged forward and pressed her lips to his. For a small, terrifying second, Ben froze but he quickly recovered. His lips swiftly melted against hers, warm and soft. His hands came up to cup her face and sparks shot up and down her body. She hummed with content as she pressed her hands against his solid chest.
Then all too soon, the kiss ended, and they pulled back from each other. She was breathing hard, her heart beating against her chest.
She considered Ben at that moment, under the dim hallway lights. Benvolio, the man who had his own problems and couldāve gone anywhere else tonight to forget them, but instead spent it cheering her up. The man who had become her closest friend again in a matter of months, after almost 2 bitter years apart.
āCome inside,ā Rosaline said as she pressed her lips against his again.
Benvolio pressed his forehead against hers and breathed in. āOkay.ā
Thereās some music for this one, and since I couldnāt get the link to work on ao3, here it is again: My official āBenvolioās feelingsā-song.
By the time they make it to the hotel, there seems to be nothing left of the nervous, insecure woman who burst into tears on his balcony last night. If ever there was a ārealā Rosaline Capulet, he knows it has to be the woman with him today: Who opens up about her insecurities rather than letting them bubble up with no warning only to act like nothing happened the next moment. Who eats āEverything Ice-creamā like itās a challenge, and not just some dumb line he made up on the spot (and which sounded a lot better in his head). Who takes time out of a trip intended to distract her from her responsibilities to visit her old nanny, because she may have a sharp tongue but she also has a big heart, and he likes both of those things about her.
Someone who deserves to be treated with honesty and respect, not used as a means to an end.
Which means only one thing: He has to come clean. Tell her about the bet and hope it wonāt ruin all the trust theyāve so carefully built today. Maybe sheāll understand, he thinks with wild hope, maybe after he told her how bad things are with his uncle and how badly he needed that one shot at success, she can forgive him for making her the price of his shot.
It doesnāt sound very convincing even in his own mind.
When he kisses her later outside the hotel and thinks that it feels special, like their first kiss as something real, he canāt help but fear that it will turn out to be their last kiss ever.
Because as soon as heās pulled away, Benvolio gathers all his courage and begins:
Any tips on actually plan a fanfic? I've always wrote my fics without planning beforehand but it isn't working very well for me (as I end up with big plot holes and fanfics that have no plot whatsoever), which makes me really sad because I end up wasting hours of work on something I will never post online. Thank you for your time and have a nice day/night! šāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØšāØš
Hmmm, planning is indeed a tricky thing. I for one am not a well-organised planner. Usually, from the moment I first have an idea I begin thinking of how it could play out, and then I write all those thoughts down into one big blob of text at the top of the document Iām writing the fic in, and I just add to that whenever I think of something new. (Alternatively, I excitedly yell about it to someone in private messages on here, at which point I later copy that stuff out of the conversation and put it in the document as well, to remember it. If that includes ideas suggested by the other person, remember to a) ask if you can use them and b) give them a shout-out in the authorās notes.)
I used to not plan at all, but now I find that planning out some semblance of a plot does help, especially with longer multi-chapter fics - at least then I know what I want to have happening, even though by the time I finally get to those parts, they might no longer work, and the story might be somewhere else entirely. (At which point, it is definitely allowed to abandon or change an intended plot point, even if it seemed like a good idea when you first started planning. Kill your darlings, as the saying goes.)
Recently, for a fic where the story is set over a specific period of days and one where the two main charactersā storylines diverged and reunited, I did make a spreadsheet to figure out what happens to which character on what day, so I knew how to make their timelines match. For stories with alternating points of view, that might be a helpful approach too, to prevent plot holes and non-matching character arcs and to make it less overwhelming to keep track of what needs to happen.
As for the problem of fic with āno plot whatsoeverā: I think thereās no such thing. Some fics have less intricate plots (not everything is like, a government conspiracy AU), but even the simplest of coffee shop AUs has a basic plot: Characters A and B meet. Characters A and B interact. Characters A and B fall in love. Thatās a plot. But if you feel like some of your fics donāt have a plot (Iām guessing because the reason you started writing it is because you could think of a few particular scenes you wanted to write and then just wrote those and didnāt know what else to write around them?), a useful question might be to ask yourself: Whatās the point of this story, what do I want it to show? And then you work from that. If youāve thought of one perfect scene between characters A and B, work from there and ask yourself: In what kind of situation could that scene happen? What could have happened before to prompt it? The character who initiates what happens in the scene: Why did they do so? What are they hoping to achieve by it? How does the other character react? What happens to the characters (internally or externally) during the scene, where does it leave them afterwards and what might it cause them (or other characters around them) to do? And just like that, you have a tiny little plot: You have a beginning, something to set the story in motion. You have a journey in the middle. And you have a point at the end where something has changed for the characters, no matter how tiny, and that might even trigger another action, and thus further your plot. Even a scene you wrote only for fun, just some pointless fluffy banter without plot twists or big gestures, can still have a purpose within the story, and that purpose can be as small asĀ āgive the characters a breakā or as big asĀ āmake them see each other in a whole new lightā.
And just like you can apply this process to individual scenes, you can and should do it for the entire story, just by asking yourself:
1) Where are the characters at the beginning of the fic, and where do I want them to be at the end of it? Again, that could be as simple as getting them from āstrangersā toĀ āpeople who speak to each otherā.
and
2) What could, and what has to happen to bring them to this point? This is where your random plot ideas come in, and should be connected to question 1. If for example you thought āat one point I want character A to have a cup of coffee and absolutely hate itā then you now have to figure out how to make it happen, what drinking that coffee will do to character A, and how it will further their relationship with character B. Will having bad coffee be the last straw after a long, shitty day? Will they loudly say they hate it, thus prompting a fight with the barista who, oops, it turns out is actually really cute? Or will the barista perhaps commiserate once theyāve found out that this cup of coffee was supposed to be the one good thing of the day for character A, thus starting a beautiful new friendship? (See? Plot is already happening.)
So question 1 is the purpose of your fic, and question 2 is where you go absolutely crazy with your ideas, test them out, and see what works and helps bring you closer to your goal. This will also help you prioritise: Which plot points absolutely need to happen for your story to reach its goal, and which ones are just an added bonus but can, if necessary, be hand-waved away? (And readers tend to have a fairly high tolerance for hand-waving plot contrivances if the character development remains consistent, Iāve found.) That said, I absolutely think itās possible to finish a long fic even when you donāt have all the plot figured out yet, so donāt get discouraged. If youāre not the type to meticulously plan everything beforehand, just start writing. I think the more important thing is that you love your idea and want to keep working on it. Sometimes that doesnāt work out and it will take you a long time to update, or you might have to abandon a work entirely, and thatās okay too. Youāre not being paid to write. Thereās no pressure for you to deliver. But if, in such cases, you feel like youāve wasted the work you did before, Iād say: Try and get back in. Kill as many darling as you have to to make your plot work, but keep the things that made you want to write the story in the first place.
And, most importantly: Ask for help. What helped me the most whenever I felt that I was stuck on plot or had a plot hole that could not be fixed was to turn to fellow writers or tumblr friends who ship the same ship or who I know are reading one of my work-in-progress fics and ask them to help me talk over plot, ask for their opinion on this or that problem Iām having. Most of the time, that works like a charm - sometimes just typing out what exactly I feel the problem is makes me see it clearer, sometimes my friends can provide a solution I hadnāt thought of, or theyāll tell me the problem isnāt actually as bad as I thought it was.
So, I guess thatās my advice on plotting, which got a little longer than intended.
And since my most important tip seems to be āyell about your plot problems to someoneā: Thank you, shipper friends, for letting me whine at you. You rock!Ā
