The office’s most striking feature was the big, round window above its desk. During the day, it looked out over the road that ran up into the Upper City, so Jenevelle could watch people coming and going. On a night like tonight, it was mostly a pitch black circle, the darkness only broken by the smaller pale circle of the moon. That’s where I saw her, a silhouette, barely outlined against the inky blackness of the night sky with the moon above her. Jen looked younger than she was – she always had. And she’d always had style. But when she worked for me, she dressed the part of a practical, down-to-earth secretary slash investigator – never mousey, but not a vamp either. Now, she looked every inch the glamorous, successful, and possibly slightly dangerous businesswoman. The kind you’d love to buy a drink for, only you probably couldn’t afford what she drank.  Like I said, Jenevelle wasn’t that ex for me. Not the big one. Still, when I saw her looking like that, it made me momentarily at a loss for words. I wanted to say something about how much I’d missed her, which was a pain I hadn’t fully realized was still there until this moment. I wanted to ask her to leave this ignominious but profitable place and come back with me to an honest detective agency that was on life support. I wanted to suggest maybe we should give things another try, and take it more seriously this time. Instead, I said: “You changed your hair again.”
