French prosecutors escalate probe of Elon Musk and X to criminal investigation
PUBLISHED THU, MAY 7 2026 4:54 PM EDT
French cybercrime authorities have escalated an investigation of Elon Musk and his social network X to a criminal probe.
The investigation began in 2025 and focuses on alleged algorithmic manipulation by X to interfere in French politics, and the spread of AI deepfake content on the social network.
The U.S. Justice Department and Musk previously accused French authorities of a sham probe that interferes with an American business.
France is investigating whether Elon Musk and his social media app X were complicit in spreading harmful AI deepfakes.

It's true, at companies they put all the best liars in a room together and have them come up with new and interesting ways to lie about things, new terminology to make it sound less like the old lies; whoever can say the most words while conveying the least meaning will eventually become their new leader.

god israel's destruction of tyre is like especially depressing tbh like thats one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. people have lived there since the bronze age. there is so, so so much history and world heritage there that's being blown up and destroyed forever because its existence doesn't fit israel's nationalist vision of history.
lots to say about israel's politicized and propagandized use of history and archaeology to further their narrative tbh. here's a good article about it.
Weaponizing antiquities is part of Israel's colonial legacy, says Rafi Greenberg, whose colleagues have largely remained silent about Gaza's
The "Biblical Prophecy" said that Tyre would be destroyed forever, and it still hasn't happened in over 2000 years, so we have to keep bombing people until the world matches some folks favorite book... But the book is chock full of ancient propaganda from ancient Kings, so history keeps echoing.

At the risk of sounding anti-intellectual, I think that college should be free and also not a requirement for employment outside of highly specialized career fields
At the risk of sounding like an effete intellectual, I do actually think you should be allowed to just take college courses indefinitely
technically you can, if you don't care about degrees.
Free Harvard courses. Free Courses from Stanford. Free Courses from MIT. Free courses from Yale. Free courses from Princeton.
Free courses on Coursera.
Free Courses on EDx Free Courses on Alison
For paid, there's The Great Courses+/Wonderium. 20$ a month for unlimited courses.
When searching, the phrases you're looking for are Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), or you can do a general search of say, "free online college courses." Oh, and so you don't get surprised like I did, have an avoid: Hillsdale College is a conservative Christian site and not a valid MOOC place. Sign up with them and you will get things like THIS IS WHY THE LEFT IS TURNING YOUR KIDS TRANS AND GAY in your inbox.
@yourunderwaterskies I wanted to say thank you so much for adding these links, seriously, they've been life-changingly helpful to me-

GOP lawmaker sees photo of colleague’s baby, brings up her abortion
After Democratic state Rep. Anna Abeytia brought her newborn to the legislature, GOP state Rep. Nick Kupper weighed in.

A bit of workplace advice: When a colleague brings her newborn child into work for the first time, perhaps don’t bring up her previous abortion.
After Democratic state Rep. Anna Abeytia brought her newborn to the legislature, GOP state Rep. Nick Kupper weighed in.
No, this was on purpose.
Calculated even.
And he will not only do it again but he's looking for his next misogynistic call out that is even more reprehensible than this is. It's all about pushing the boundaries of polite society until they demolish all norms.
This. Was. On. Purpose.
If you haven’t heard, today PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome has been renamed to Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome. This change reflects that this is not a reproductive “problem” but a whole body disease.
For reference, from the WHO website:
(Text: PCOS affects an estimated 10-13% of reproductive-aged women. It is estimated that up to 70% of women with PCOS worldwide do not know they have this condition.)
The Lancet link about shift to PMOS. Spread this to everyone who works in health care now. People with uteruses and ovaries are in agony - yes, the whole body suffers a crisis every fkn month - and health care should help
An abandoned theater in Rochester, New York. Formerly a pornographic theater, then just a facade after the Walgreens next door gutted it to use as a warehouse. The Walgreens with it's shampoo and baby formula and half of the store locked in cages; the contradictions stare into you. You go because it is the nearest pharmacy, close in walking distance for you and your disabled loved ones.
The Walgreens shuts down and it too, is now just a vacant facade, next to a vacant facade. You stare into the large windows meant to advertise it's contents, now only showcasing absence. A wide open space with torn up floors. You think about how perfect the location could be for low income housing, for squatting, for anything other than standing as a constant reminder of the city's failures to her people. The parking lot is empty, save for the occasional cop car, to ensure no one uses the lot or the building for anything at all. The cop ensures the space will stay as useless as himself.
They add letters to the theater's marquee; a reminder and encouragement of surveillance. "If you see something, say something. In progress call 911, over and done call 311." They board up the doors, ensuring that the space will stay in it's intended form: empty, useless, an eyesore that reminds everyone of their place. The freshly boarded up door has been emblazoned with a message from those who lack.
"A man would shelter, if he could / in the nook behind this new plywood / the building, abandoned / the man is too / how I wish you'd imagine / that it were you."

Rights you have from birth are slowly stripped away by conservative politicians.
Constructs are created to control. Medical debt? Student debt? Remove these constructs and you have instant freedom.
Universal healthcare would remove the employer's control of your health insurance and allow you to move from job to job, or if you lose your job, and still have health care.
Example of Tumblr's aging userbase: people complain about prices rising and how things were better in the past and are getting worse all the time (often in spite of contrary evidence!), have often developed a sharp technophobia based on misunderstandings of how technologies work and moral panics about dangers that are not supported by research, and hold strong opinions about the problem being due to moral failings that can be fixed by simply destroying the unvirtuous and showing personal virtue, and also are convinced that the past was both better and also harder, and that kids these days have it too easy (but they feel sorry for them because everything sucks now)
The past is a vast country with a quite varied terrain.
I'm going to say it: I think things *were* better here in the US, on almost any possible metric, during the Obama presidency, than they are now.
Something that continuously bugs me is that, even beyond the basic issue of "Trump and his Supreme Court are making specific things worse" is that, well, lots of times and places in the past just *were* "better and also harder" that's just a correct assessment, not a mistake from aging.
And the sort of rejection of that idea bothers me because it makes it impossible to assert any *specific* value, and instead insists on a kind of utilitarian totality.
You can't talk about, say, the inscreasing "Bowling Alone" isolation of the US population, or for that matter the Republican dominated Supreme Court gutting the voting rights act because along that same timeline we also invented a lot of really important vaccines so that means that ultimately things *in their totality* are better and so "It's actually sad and dangerous that we're becoming so isolated and there's genuine evidence that we were less isolated in the past" is made synonymous with "I'm nostalgic for when things were worse."
I actually have way less patience for old person bitching about how everything sucks and is ruined now than you'd think from what I wrote above but there's a sense where...
I don't know, it somehow becomes the only possible defense against the argument made above, something something ressentiment.
You retreat into nostalgia because the structure of the world doesn't let you express any specific value, just a kind of broad generalization.
It never ceases to amaze me that the ground can just sit there doing nothing and increase in value/price forever, because it's an investment vehicle for some reason?
Don't donate to World Central Kitchen because even after their members were murdered by Israel, the founder Jose Andreas still collaborated with Israel and recently they served displaced Israeli settlers bombed by Iran and Hezbollah

Hot take: I don't care if someone "contributes to society" or not. They are a person and still deserve human rights, food, and shelter.
and when people say “contributes to society” they really mean “contributes to capitalism/the economy” because there are plenty of ways people can contribute without working or generating revenue for corporations and billionaires
[ID: To the people who say Ocasio-Cortez's proposed 70% top marginal tax rate on Americans making over $10 million a year is too radical, remind them of this: under Republican President Eisenhower the top marginal tax rate was 91% on Americans making over $200,000 a year which is $1.7 million in today's dollars.
