Introduction
In this week's blog, I will be discussing two topics that connect with sustainability. The two topics will be cooking and education.
Cooking and Sustainability
Cooking is something that everyone does, and these tasks that everyone does have an impact on the environment too. It has been shown that at the household level in Europe, food waste is estimated to represent more than 50% of the total food waste (Stancu, Haugaard, Lahteenmaki). By changing how we cook, we can lower these numbers and contribute to the sustainable development goals.
Different ways of cooking brings up the topic of solar cooking systems. Solar cooking has been around since 1767, and today there are many classifications of solar cooking systems. These cooking systems can decrease the use of wood for rural communities that still use firewood, which cause health issues after prolonged use and negative environmental impacts. Another method that can help with these effects is composting. Composting generates significantly less methane than organic waste that ends up in landfills (Food Print). These methods can definitely help with the sustainable development goals and I think these articles and topics should be included in the regular Colloquium content. This specific topic of cooking should be incorporated into the food topic of the regular content.
Technology and Sustainability
Surprisingly, technology has an environmental impact as well. In fact, 2% of global emissions come from the electricity used by the internet (Greenwood, Kinsta). Unlike other industries that are working hard towards lowering the environmental impacts through carbon emissions, technology carbon emissions is projected to grow 3.5% in the next 10 years. Just to show some statistics, "The average website produces 6.8 grams of CO2 per page view. This might not sound like a lot but it adds up fast. An average website with 10,000 page views per month would produce 816kg of CO2 per year" (KINSTA). The website that gave me this statistic shows their own carbon emissions.
Of course, there are ways we can reduce the amount of carbon emissions that are released from websites. By writing code cleanly and efficiently, compressing files and images, and so much more, the websites can be decreased by 90%! There are many companies that are well known for switching to green its energy supplies, such as Google. On average, a Google data center uses 50% less energy than a typical data center (KINSTA). I believe that if people knew more about the effects that even the internet has on the environment, these types of solutions could be spread and implemented. I think this topic can be part of the regular colloquium content as well if the resources were a little more audience friendly. The resources for this topic are very heavy on the tech jargon and can be difficult to read. I do think it is important to talk about the effects of technology on sustainability though, as the internet has become a need in a lot of places, such as school and work.
