This had never happened before.

Wait, no. That was a lie. This had happened before but not for so long that he had kind of... forgotten it was a thing. So long in fact, he was having trouble tracking down why the little enchantment hadn’t worked. Had it been because he had moved on to such complicated ones that he just forgot how to do a basic enchanting spell? Was something else off?

Something weird had happened, for sure. And he didn’t get what he was aiming for, but at the very least the gem on his little project was actually glowing. pulsing even. Something had gone right but everything else had gone wrong. It wasn’t supposed to be glowing, this wasn’t anything connected to anyone’s life force.

Ethari was rather glad he had chosen to do this outside as well, instead of squirreled away in the workshop, because the spell itself had had some sort of odd reaction. It was far too reactive, considering he was only imbuing the charm with a little glitz and glamour, not anything special. Yet the energy had sparked and popped like dropping grease into a flame, and luckily it didn’t actually spark anything on fire.

Confusion written all over his face as he sat in the quiet of the trees and plants around him, turning the pendant over and over in his hands and trying to sort out what exactly had happened while simultaneously having absolutely no idea. Maybe he was just out of practice on using magic to make things look nice... After all he couldn’t consider it a failure until he knew what he did to it.
