Not You, Not Me

What kind of beautiful sky do you want? At least more beautiful than this. How? Explain it to me. An orange sky, I guess. And the round shape of the Sun in the middle. Pretty clouds all around it. It would be great to have a rainbow too. I'm seeing it. As beautiful as you describe. Day, all I'm seeing now is gray clouds. Look again more closely. See? The sky is a gradient from red to orange to yellow. And there's the Sun hiding at the skyline, shining through the edge of the clouds. Looks just like ocean waves. I'm seeing it now. As beautiful as what you just described. . So, you've seen everything you want to see? Not yet. There's still one last image. Are you smiling? Mhm. Don't lie to me. . This is it. The last image I want to see. . . (In the end, Mee became a statue and gazed joyfully at the last light, forever.)

I’ve been in such a weird headspace post-Moonlight Chicken, post-Utsukushii Kare, and currently with my historical watch of SOTUS – in that, watching shows not only with a slow pace, but with seemingly one singular storyline (which I know isn’t exactly correct for Jo’F, but roll with me here) is a touch of a shock to my system.

That being said: I really like how the ultimate reveal between Fumiya and Ritsu that they used to date has been drawn out to at least five episodes, which we see in the preview for next week. I like how quiet this show is, literally – I like that Fumiya was talking to Ritsu while Ritsu was wearing headphones. I like the silence in which Ritsu saw an empty living room before discovering the box of their shared memories. I love the silence, the music-less-ness of the flashbacks. It gives me the sense that Fumiya is recalling his memories with such desperate intensity, wanting to relive them as a means of trying to save their relationship. It’s lovely to me. Even Fumiya’s cluelessness about how inherently unfair his position is vis à vis Ritsu – there’s something a little sympathetic, naive, and cute about it, even though I have a feeling that it’ll come back to bite him as Ritsu uncovers the truth.

I love this show – I really need a slowwwww burn, à la The Promise, to recover from the recent drama endings. Jo’F is firing on all cylinders in a sweet, paced way.
