Fall in Maine had been something worth missing. No matter where the threads of fate had placed her across the country, there was something about the crisp scent of air enveloping her, leaves on the trees melting into shades of red and gold, chill cutting through her leggings and coat that made it feel like fall: it made it feel like home. Andie had spent the afternoon out on a hike around one of the easier trails, getting Heath properly tired with a walk โ the thought process was tire him out, pour a glass of wine once comfortably on her couch and put on old reruns of TV while sifting through wholesale catalogues for new holiday finds to order for the Shoppe's inventory. The sun was bleeding out in the sky, golden hour befalling them about the time Andie made it back through to the parking lot, shuffling with Heath past the main ranger's station on their way to the car. Movement stopped her in her tracks, and curiosity got the better of her when she saw a flash of dirty blonde hair and a familiar gate. There wasn't any way. And yet, there absolutely was, because being home meant everything was back on the table.
"Holy shit," she muttered under her breath, one hand holding onto Heath's leash and the other shading her eyes as if it'd give her a better look. "Jason Browning, that you?" Andie called out. Worst case scenario, she'd swallow the embarrassment of a misunderstanding and scurry off in her Jeep.
the theme for andie's halloween this year is comfort โ with purchasing & taking over the holiday shoppe, the majority of her energy has gone into making sure other people's halloweens are nothing short of top tier. this means she hasn't had a whole lot of time to hunt down or craft up an elaborate costume, so she's mostly going with either things she's got around the house or could easily buy on amazon, lmao.
andie's attending the vibrations halloween party as holly golightly's iconic around-the-brownstone look from breakfast at tiffany's. for halloween day, catch andie down at the holiday shoppe out front with apple cider & little debbie cakes, handing them out to anyone who comes by. bonus points for those in costume or if you come in for an early start on those halloween decor discounts! once she's done for the night, she's changing into her rachel green football costume for trick-or-treating, in case anyone comes by on the prowl for candy. again, she'll also have the crockpot on deck, keeping her hot cocoa going in case anyone gets chilly. hit her up if you need a ride home! she hopes you have a safe & happy halloween โกฬ

Taryn chuckled before tipping her witch hat at Andie. "You think? I just love Halloween. It's my favorite holiday which I know is odd to some people because they love Christmas or Thanksgiving, but Halloween is really it for me." she smiled, looking at everything around the cafe. It looked very witchy and wizardry and that was exactly how Taryn wanted it to be. "I would take all of the commemorative stamps and display them in the cafe." she winked.
She looked down at herself as Andie complimented her dress. "Thank you! I found it online and ordered it. I knew it could go either good or bad, but I lucked out and it turned out really well." She took a few breaths before shrugging. "Honestly, not many seconds to yourself when you're the host and owner and part maker of all this. Beau's done a lot too though so I didn't have to do it all by myself and it helped. I know he's gonna pull me away from the ovens or table at some point so I can enjoy it though. He's a great employee." Taryn really didn't know what she would do without Beau. He was a great addition to the cafe. Taryn chuckled happily at Andie's joke before. "I put a little spell on everything before I brought it out so..." she teased back. "How have you been though? How is your lovely shop? I'll be in there to spend plenty of money for sure in a couple of weeks for Christmas. I gave your tent a lot of my money at Creek Fest with Halloween decorations." she chuckled softly.
"Know," she confirmed with a grin, the soft slip of her eye in a wink. "Halloween's just... fun, y'know? No real pressure like the other two โ your family won't judge you for messing up the Halloween candy bowl the same way they would if you ruined the pie on Thanksgiving."
"You don't give yourself nearly enough credit, Tar; firstly, you could've decided to dress up as a garbage bag and you would've made it look like it just came off the runway, and second, you and Beau are both fantastic. If you weren't, I'd frequent Starbucks every day instead." The words spilled from her earnestly as she tore off a small bite of her donut, the steam pouring out in lazy tendrils. She popped it in her mouth, letting the flavor explode across her tastebuds before giving a firm nod. "Your spell succeeded. Ten outta ten. Gonna put this on the menu permanently? Or at least for fall?" Andie shifted out of the way as a few other patrons made their way up to the buffet tables, eager for their seconds or to sample something new.
"Things have been... good," Andie replied, lungs releasing an exhale that ruffled the tendrils of hair framing her face. "Busy. Between a new house and hitting peak holiday season, owning a holiday shop kinda puts me in high demand." Truthfully, it was unlike anything she'd ever experienced โ everything she'd done since coming back home had happened on a whim, leaving her to figure it out as she went. It was her first time on this particular journey, but for every moment of not knowing what to do other than take the next step or glittery chaos that consumed her, she felt more and more vindicated in her decisions. "But hey, glad we could help 'ya out. Christmas inventory goes out as soon as Halloween packs its bags, so I'm gearing up for an overnight. Which means you'll be seeing plenty of me around these parts for my caffeine fix."
I won't say that I work in a holiday-dependent business but I often have couples who love to get married right around those holidays for added special feelings, that I understand that feeling of going, going, going. I've got two weddings that will be the weekend before Christmas, one the Saturday after Christmas and a massive wedding the Friday after New Years... it seems like everyone wants to do these around those holidays and it just hits a point where I feel like I'm running on full speed. Well the snacks and company sounds like a wonderful thing but my research project -- as much as I love a good project board and all details tucked perfectly inside, may end up being half-assed due to you know, weddings. I do love me some good snack though.
That sweet spot between November and New Year's is the coveted winter wedding time. Like you said, the special feelings, that extra something that seems like it's in the air... it's irresistible. I get it, though, the running on full speed with no real reliability from the brakes (or, in my particular case, glitter) is amplified when your job is, in some way, impacted by the holiday season. In your case, it just makes it all the more appealing. Would you say this is your busiest time of year or do you have more couples coming to you in droves during another season? I'll waive whatever half-assery, so long as you bring a story or two that sounds like it could've aired on TLC. Snacks are guaranteed. Wine, too, if that's your thing.
Hibernating sounds amazing, actually. Howโs that been going so far? Iโve found myself much more busy this year, maybe the kids are just giving me more to work with? Thatโs not at all me complaining, though! Itโs been a pretty good fall, lots of big things happening. Honestly I used to just go with the flow of things, at least it was like that three years ago. And things just kind of came and went and weโd just roll with it. This year feels different. I did decorate for the fall and Halloween, which is something I wasnโt able to do last year! So this year Iโm looking forward to the holidays.
They've been going! It's a weird change of pace, honestly? I've never owned a business or been the seasonal magic manufacturer, but it's been a fun time. Never a dull moment, which, when it comes to the workplace, I've had enough to last me an absolute lifetime. Hey, the kids meeting you somewhere in the middle just means job security. Oh? Any good big things happening that you wanna share with the class? No pressure if not. That's good, though, all the big and exciting things rolling through and sweeping you along for the ride. Oh wow, look at you moving on up in the world! Tell me how the decorating went! Subtle? Overboard? Just right? I feel like the decor is really what gets you in the mood for the season, it makes the ambiance. Not to pitch myself or anything, but when it comes mid-November and you're looking to get the ball rolling, I've got 'ya. We'll turn your home into the holiday wonderland of your dreams.
Don't you worry Andie, we will let you sleep all of January away. February, however, I will need all of the pink and red heart wall decor for the health office, ready to go. Snacks and your company, you say? What a lucky gal, I am. Now just what does participation in this research study require of me? Beside explaining that the holidays for me are filled with praying that I don't catch a bug from one of my students, or Zoey, and lots of extra charting during sick season. And my collection of cute themed scrubs, of course. I would say those are in the 'enjoy' category, the praying is 'survival'.
I am fully anticipating to be bleeding pink and red glitter hearts come February despite whatever hibernation smacks me in the face, so you don't have to worry about that. What can I say? I tried to give it some incentive. That's exactly what the study entails โ now that I'm the maker of the magic, I gotta make sure I don't burn myself out on it. Can't lose the whimsy and wonder, y'know? Sick season puts such a damper on things; at least you get to ride it out in the cute themed scrubs. Scrubs should be a universal work uniform, truly. They've always looked super comfy. Kinda like professional sweatpants, in their own roundabout way. You keep any good tea or soup recipes on deck for that survival phase?
Do you really, honestly want to know how I survive the hustle and bustle of the holiday season? ... I hire a decorator and a personal shopper. But then again, I'm not much of a holiday person, so I'm not sure that I'm the best person to ask. I'll still take the snacks and company, though. Here, let's turn this around: when the holiday rush is through, and you enter hibernation mode, what do you look forward to doing the most? Besides sleeping. Binge watching TV? Catching up on... knitting? Taking up a new sport?
Well now I've got questions, Raf โ do you give the decorator a specific vision? Or direction on how you want it? Or do you just give 'em creative freedom? And how does one go about finding a personal shopper during the peak of shopping season? Is there like... Tinder for your Christmas shopping? You gotta let me know. Not saying I'm going to also need to take advantage of it this season but between a new house and a store that kind of demands seasonal perfection... might need the leg up. Haven't knitted a day in my life, I'm afraid; very seriously doubt that I've got the knack for it, but I do love a craft from Pinterest every now and again. Realistically speaking, though, it'll probably be getting the house the way I want it. Painting, more painting, possibly redoing the kitchen.

Dressed in an faded t-shirt and overalls, her light jacket already hung up to the side, Sloan started to settle into the pottery studio. Amongst the walls were so many pieces of Halloween related decor waiting to be painted, and while she fully planned on grabbing a small pumpkin to paint and place on her desk in her office, this moment, early in the morning, was to make an attempt at the pottery wheel. It had been so long since Sloan had practiced anything like this, but it had been something she enjoyed for a really long time. There was something peaceful about it, at least for her. After grabbing the amount of clay she dropped it onto the wheel and started kneading before someone sat down next to her. "Trying your hand at making something too?"
"Trying," Andie agreed with a head tip of acknowledgement, wincing as her efforts to shape her clay. "That's the operative phrase. Don't know that I'd call it succeeding, though. This was supposed to be a vase." Whatever she had sitting on the wheel in front of her was far from it โ if anything, it was a noble attempt at something new, but far from the handmade piece of art she'd daydreamed up to sit in the shop with a faux-flower arrangement for the holidays. The back of her hand rubbed at a spot on her forehead where some flyaway hairs had escaped their capture within a haphazard bun. "On a scale from one to ten, though, how obvious is it that the last time I attempted clay was... probably high school?"
I think being up to my eyeballs in a holiday-dependent business the last few months has only reconfirmed to me that this time of year is all gas, no brakes. Just about every major holiday squeezes itself into this back quarter of the year, and for what? For me to go into hibernation like a bear after New Year's? I love this time of year, but a girl's gotta avoid the burnout. This is my first rodeo trying to both capitalize on and enjoy the holidays like every other average Joe โ consider this my formal plea to take part in Andie St. Aubin's first annual research project of how do you both enjoy and survive the last three months of the year. Participants will be rewarded with snacks and my company.
Taryn blew a tendril of her hair out of her face as she restocked a platter of croissants before putting the empty platter in the back and coming back out to the front of the cafe. She was surprised at how successful the brunch was. She was definitely thinking about making it more of a staple in the cafe. Maybe once a month or something. She hadn't worked all the details out quite yet.
Moving over to where some people were adding food to their plates since everything was laid out family style, Taryn smiled. "You won't regret the apple cinnamon donuts. They came out fresh from the oven just a few moments ago. Is everything to your liking so far?" She had to keep the masses pleased.
Saying no to Sunday brunch of any kind felt akin to sacrilege for Andie, the same sentiment handed down to a themed brunch at that. Cobblestone was her daily haunt, after all, passing through each morning and afternoon before she checked in for shifts down at the Shoppe โ this Halloween season had called for extra doses of caffeine โ that one more day couldn't possibly hurt. It paid off, of course, between the immaculately spooky ambiance and the incredible spread.
"The hostess with the mostest," Andie affirmed as Taryn flitted by to check in, lifting the coffee cup she still had in hand up in a gesture of salut. "You've really outdone yourself. If the Holiday Shoppe gave out commemorative stamps for festivity, you'd have earned it by a landslide." Taking Taryn's advice, she reached for one of the apple cinnamon donuts, cradling it in her pincer grasp with a napkin firmly embracing it. "The outfit's fabulous, too. You had a second yet to take it all in, enjoy it? The food's kinda to die for," she playfully ribbed, sending a knowing wink Taryn's way.
OO1. One of the few necklaces that Andie wears daily is a thin chain with a Cartier Love ring threaded through it; her ex fiancรฉe bought her the ring for Christmas one year. Despite swearing that relationship is over (and that at some point she'll mail the ring back), she still wears it every single day โ whether it's a reminder of everything she gave up in order to choose herself first, or she's just too much of a sentimentalist, she'll never truly say.
OO2. If you were to ever rummage around in Andie's purse, you've got a high likelihood of pulling out one of the following: loose sticks of Big Red gum, pop-tabs from an Alani can she didn't want to litter, a random Crayola Clicks pen, a receipt from Cobblestone Cafรฉ, a tube of The Outset's Lip Oasis in the shade 'Dune', L'Occitane's hand cream, her Hobonichi Weeks planner that she's known to both grocery list and emotional breakdown in, or a stray claw clip.
OO3. She rescued her black and white Border Collie, Heath, about three weeks into being back in town when she saw a picture of him on the shelter's Instagram in need of a foster home. She had every intention of fostering him... and that went about as well as expected. Her application to adopt him was submitted three days after taking home, and the first order of business was changing his name from Milo to that of one of her favorite actors.
OO4. Andie only just moved into her countryside home at the end of September, after being back in Merrock for a month. She did her time in a rental brownstone downtown prior; her rural home was the only one she looked at, a happy accident of sorts that she'd even found herself at the open house and putting in an offer. Her highlights of the home include the pre-established flower bed and gardens, porch space that looks over the dirt road, and a window seat in her kitchen.
OO5. She's never been the best in the kitchen; she's got a few staple dishes she's perfected but she's now on the quest to expand her repertoire. She wants to eventually curate enough recipes that she's decent at that she can make into her own holiday-themed cookbook for the shop. Also, she really wants to get into making homemade wine, considering she enjoyed her brief stint as a bartender, but she's got a ways to go.
OO6. If you're ever planning to leave Andie a voicemail, let that dream die. Her voicemail has been full for almost two years now, and because she's got a weird attachment to them and the little memories they remind her of, she won't delete any of them. That said, she's the type to text you back in a heartbeat... once she reads it.
OO7. Her Jeep's name is Emilia. She's got a campfire marshmallow fragrance bottle hanging off the rearview mirror (think clove, vanilla, rosewood, and amber) and the audio system's volume must sit on an even number between 8-16. Odd numbers itch.
OO8. There's a scar on Andie's right calf from where she was twenty-four, newly single in Portland, and found herself out drinking one night at a honky tonk bar. Somehow she ended up dancing on the bar with her friends (strangers) and nearly stumbled off at one point, resulting in a thin, jagged cut. She's convinced the only reason she's got a scar is because she was too out of it to get down to an emergency room and have someone stitch it up, but if anything, it's a good story.
OO9. Her top Spotify artist predictions for 2025 are Noah Kahan, Kelsea Ballerini, Kacey Musgraves, SZA, and Kesha.
O1O. Skincare and beauty are a niche interest of hers that isn't entirely evident, considering she very rarely wears makeup beyond SPF tinted moisturizer, lip balm and mascara on a day-to-day basis. She's got a ten step skincare routine she goes through every night and she quite enjoys collecting makeup, even if it's not in her particular color profile. Most of it's stored under the extra sink in her master bathroom; she'll gladly help you find what colors make your eyes pop or what your perfect nude lipstick shade is if you ask.
