BELTANE STRAWBERRY LEMON PASSION BARS
Hello my loves! Beltane is almost here, so I started to experiment with new recipes. This one, I have been messing around in the kitchen to get it right for 2 weeks now.
Beltane often includes aphrodisiacs and other romantic foods. So why not some sweet strawberry lemon bars that represent love and passion?
FOR THE CRUST
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 ½ cup butter, softened
1 cup powdered sugar
FOR THE FILLING
1 cup sugar
2 tsp. grated lemon peel
The juice of 1 lemonÂ
½ cups strawberries
A pinch of salt
4 large eggs
3 tbsp honey
Directions
Butter a square baking pan, and line the bottom and sides of the pan with parchment paper. This will prevent the bars from sticking to the pan.
Make the crust by creaming the butter, sugar and salt in a kitchen aid until light and fluffy. Stir in the flour. Press the dough into the bottom of the baking tin with your hands.
While you wait for the oven to preheat to 350 F. Chill the pan in the fridge. Bake your crust for 12-15 minutes, until very lightly browned. Leave the oven on.
While you wait for the crust to bake, blend your strawberries into a puree.Â
Whisk together the eggs, sugar, lemon zest, lemon juice, and blended strawberries. Pour the mixture over the crust and bake for about 35 minutes, or until your filling is set.
After cooling for 1 hour, dust with powdered sugar and enjoy!
Prayer to Hestia
Hestia, Goddess of the Hearth
Goddess of the home
I pray to you.
I ask you to fill my home
With love,
With good memories,
And with safety.
I pray that my home be a sanctuary
For all who enter.
I pray my home be the comfort
At the end of a long day.
I pray for your blessings in this house,
Hestia, Goddess of the hearth and home.

Some herbs and their magical properties from Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs đż
No one:
Literally No one:
Witches: Shit... I forgot about Imbolc.
A Hearth Witch's Security System - Boundaries and Entrances
A Disclaimer: I am one person and my opinions (which I have in abundance) may not reflect the opinions of other witches, in general, or other people who call themselves hearth witches. In fact, they probably wonât, because Iâm an asshole. I have a bizarre sense of humor that doesnât convey well in text and I rant about shit I donât like. A lot. If you donât think you can handle that, maybe donât read anything I write. Ever.
Protecting the Home, Protecting the FamilyÂ
Let me preface this post by saying, I am exhausted, so probably nothing I write here is going to make sense to anyone but me. Also, that has just been my luck lately, but weâll see how it goes anyway.Â
If you read my blog, youâll know that I do a lot of stuff to protect my railroad cottage. Not just because I live here, but because I literally use my house as a symbol of my household and family. So, in a witchcraft sense, protecting my home is protecting my family. And, because thatâs the witchcraft I write about most on my blog, thatâs what I get a lot of questions about (spirit work aside, because thatâs what I get the most questions about).Â
So, this post is going to be about various ways to protect your home and (hopefully) prevent nasties from creeping inside.Â
Rule Number One: Keep a Clean House
I know that sounds really boring. I know youâre like, âEmma, that is not witchcraft. Those are chores and I hate you. Did my mom put you up to this?â But, actually, there are two good reasons thatâs Rule No. 1:Â
Itâs not easy to cleanse a house that isnât clean. Part of protecting your home is being prepared to go into battle for it. Now, witchcraft is known to make a house a little cluttered. If youâve got ribbons falling out of your sewing box and stockpiles of tea on your counter. Donât worry. Youâre normal. But itâs possible for a house to be both cluttered and clean.
Cleaning a house regularly is a fantastic way to magically take ownership of the propertyâwhich Iâve discussed here.Â
Obviously, Iâm not saying youâre house has to look like something from Good Housekeeping. My own cottage has four rooms and is home to more than four people. Itâll never be as neat as we want it to be. Butâs itâs clean. And thatâs what matters.Â
Rule Number Two: Good Fences Make Good NeighborsÂ
Iâm not talking about real fencesâbut those too. Iâm talking more about magical boundaries. Like a witch fence. This can be set up in or outside of ritual, using a real fence, other objects, or using visualization.Â
So, letâs talk about putting up this fence, huh? The method I use  is, of course, the âGross Methodââand, by gross, I mean no one wants to do it or talk to me theyâve found out Iâve done it. It uses a pre-existing fence to create the boundary, which means that what youâre actually doing with this method is enchanting or reinforcing your standing fence. Itâs supa supa easy. Like really, children could do if you let them. Only probably donât let them because itâs probably a health hazard.Â
For this method, you will need 1) a fence, 2) something to mark your stake-points with, 3) some bodily fluidsâi.e. menstrual blood, piss, spit, sexual fluids, etc., 4) your bad olâ self
Step One: Walk around your property and decide where you want your stake-points to be. I refer to them as stake-points because what youâre actually doing is kind of like putting up a magical tent rather than a fence. These are the strength points of your enchanted fence. Youâll want at least one in every corner of the existing fence. Mark these places. You can do this by scratching or painting on the fence, tying something to the fence, or sticking something in the ground there. In my case, I used the support posts for my pre-existing fence as my stake points, so I didnât have to mark them because I knew where they were.Â
Step Two: Collect fluids. (Unless youâre using spit, which you have.) You can water any of these fluids down if you need toâexcept probably spit.Â
Step Three: Using a paintbrush, herbs, your hands, a spray bottle, or whatever, apply the fluid to the INSIDE of your fence where your neighbors wonât be touching. As you do, visualize the stake-points linking together as theyâre placed. I tend to visualize something like a barbed-wire fence going up between my stake-points, but white light works too if youâre into that. **If youâre going to forget, mark where you started.
Step Four: When youâve completed the fence and connected your last stake-point to your starting point, visualize the tent going up. In my visualization this is something like a deer-skin version of a Circus tent, but I am a legit freak of nature, so your probably wont be.Â
Now, you can be done here, or you can write something to say to tweak the spell to your style. If you have Property Spirits that you work with, you may also want to ask them to guard the fence at this point.Â
Rule Number Three: Gardening = AmmoÂ
While weâre still outdoors, letâs talk about âdefensive gardeningâ. One of my favorite things to do with my garden is to reinforce my boundaries by planting protective herbs. Not only does it add punch to your enchanted fence, but it provides ammunition should you need to banish something later.Â
This can be done directly in the ground, in hanging planters at/on your stake-points, in windowboxes, in planters by the door, etc.Â
Some good protective herbs to start are:
Aloe
RosemaryÂ
Roses (thorny for offensive magic, rosehips for defensive magic)
Mint
Lavender
You may also want to include banishing plants
GarlicÂ
SageÂ
Sweeatgrass
Thyme
As well as flowers, trees, and shrubs to the same effect (like holly, cedar, etc).Â
Rule Number Four: Wards/Wardings Arenât As Hard As They Sound
Come with me to the porch and letâs talk about wards! *runs to the porch, points at wards* Wards are awesome! There are so many different kinds and they can range anywhere from decorative to practical to invisible!Â
When youâre warding your doorway, like a lot of witchcraft, intent is super important. Really, it doesnât matter what kind of ward you use as long as you have the intent. And, with the bucket load of types of warding, you should be able to find one to fit your needs.
My favorite way to ward a door or window is with a decorative ward, which was something we did in my family for years and then I finally saw it outside of our house in an Ellen Dugan book (which I bought JUST for that reason). This one isnât mine, but itâs a good example of one:
These hang above doors and windows to ward off evil, ill will, etc. and can be made out of dried flowers and herbs (like above), fabric (such as a warding banner), carved into the wood above a door, or any other way you prefer.Â
I usually go with the pictured method. Typically I
Start with a base. For year-round wards I like to use wheat and dried grass (which you can find at a craft storeâbut not Hobby Lobby, because they areevil).Â
I face half of my base one way and half the opposite wayâso that the cut ends are together and you have the awesome wheat/grass/evergreen ends facing out. Over lap the two halves a few inches and tie them together. (I usually use twine for that, but you can use whatever you like.
Next, go you your second layer, which is the actual warding part. For this, my favorite things to use are lavender (which grows wild in the neighborhood I work in), and rosemary. But there are plenty of other possibilities, tooâsunflowers, rose, babyâs breath, holly, pine, mint, etc. These can be tucked into the tie youâve already made, glued on, or tied on separately.Â
To finish mine off, I usually add a bell, to symbolize a signal, which sort of makes the ward into an alarm. Sometimes, when trouble is around, Iâll hear a bell even though itâs not ringing. Sometimes it actually rings.Â
The ward can go above your door, window, fireplace, or anywhere else you feel you want to hang it.Â
Of course, there are a lot of other ways to ward your doors and windows.Â
With energy and visualization.Â
With water or oil (drawing protective symbols on them with the water/oil)Â
Warding Wreaths
Other hangings (like photographs of deities or saints, Brigidâs crosses, horseshoes, strings or bells)
Salt lines and brickdust (I tend to mix these together)
Hanging herbs by or above the door (I typically dry my herbs next to the door so I never have a shortage of door-based protection)
Whatever
The most important thing is that you make your intent clear. Whether you want to ward off evil spirits or unwelcome mortal visitors, make your intent clear. If you need to do this by putting your warding into a big ritual, do so. If you need to activate your wards out loud, go ahead.Â
Rule Number Five: Everything You Need to Strengthen Your Protection is On/In You
Spit
Urine
Menstrual Blood
Sexual FluidsÂ
SweatÂ
and so on
These are all totally useful supplies for witchcraft in general and for protection in specific. A touch of one of these on a window, door, doorknob, etc is fantastic for strengthening a boundary and clearly marking your territory to anyone who might wander inside. Surface cleaning with remove germs, but not the intent or the warning.
Rule Number Six: Never Let an Outsider Make Your Forget Whose House This Is
The conviction of ownership is pretty important to home protection. Donât let an intruder scare you into believing that they own your home. They donât. Itâs yours. The people inside it are yours.Â
Iâve been getting a lot of requests for home protection lately â this ought to help some people out, thank you!
^^Wow, this is amazing! Thank you!
Must print out immediately. :3
I gotta ask, how do people, like, do stuff???
hereâs what iâve figured out so far:
-gotta have eat first
-gotta sleep enough first
(seriously so many days iâm like âi have all afternoon Iâma Do a Thingâ and then i just kinda buzz around and do Nothing and think âWHYâ and then iâm like âoh yeah iâm really fuckening tiredâ)
-gotta be Excited About It (ADHD brain only does things if theyâre Literally the Most Interesting Thing Happening Right Now) (so like, hype yourself up to work on a project, or think about how happy youâll be with a cleaner room/all those chores done)
-gotta have small, doable first step (like, âget cloth from fabric drawerâ or âopen google docsâ
-FUCK distractions (computer is in drawer, phone is Off)
-Engage the Senses (if task needs Brain, play vague background Music, if task needs No Brain, listen to audiobook/podcast)
-maybe set time limit so i donât get lost??? e.g. i have a little egg timer that i use because the ticking isnât distracting but is enough to remind me that Time is a Thing that is Passing Right Now
-gotta have Self Awareness and Thinky about the Moment (get into the habit of Consciously Noticing what youâre doing at the moment, so youâre more likely to go âwait, this isnât what i wanted to be doingâ and be able to redirect)
-be willing to redirect and try to do something else if whatever you want to do Just Isnât Happening
-DONâT beat yourself up for only doing part of something, or failing entirely- all that does is make your brain associate âtrying to do stuffâ with âwell that SUCKEDâ. Which means you donât want to try again. Tell urself u did good for trying, and if it didnât work, try again later, or figure out why it didnât work and try a different way. Reward yourself for trying
this is what iâve figured out about cajoling the Thinky No Worky Brain into Doing Stuff. itâs not 100% reliable, especially if I forget to do some of these things (like SLEEP), but itâs what i got, ya know??
I wasnât actually expecting any answers when I made that post but damn this is really helpful, thank you <3
For all those who need it because I sure did!
â-DONâT beat yourself up for only doing part of something, or failing entirely- all that does is make your brain associate âtrying to do stuffâ with âwell that SUCKEDâ. Which means you donât want to try again. Tell urself u did good for trying, and if it didnât work, try again later, or figure out why it didnât work and try a different way. Reward yourself for tryingâ
Trying to retrain my brain after 30 years of doing this. I have made progress!
- things can often be broken into smaller steps than you first think, and you can sometimes rest between steps you thought of as one big step. when I cook, step one is âpull out the recipeâ, steps two through ? are âgather ingredients and cooking implementsâ and then I rest. This wonât always work depending on the toleration level of people you share the kitchen with and how many things you need out, but for me itâs often really important to be able to say âonce Iâve piled my supplies on the counter I get to take a breakâ
- sometimes you have to throw up your hands and get the âextraâ things that are more rewarding or less intimidating done first, because thatâs the difference between doing something and doing nothing. And sometimes, when you do that, you get an energy and confidence boost that lets you do some of the things you couldnât face before
- if hiding your computer and phone make everything worse, or you just canât make the will save to do it, is there part of the task you can do while looking at your phone? If the thing you need to do is on your phone or your computer, what if you put the distractions on the other one? Fic open on your phone, task open on your computer so itâs in your field of vision and maybe a part of it will snag your attention as more managable than the other parts.
- generally, as much as possible, keep things in front of you, in your field of attention. try to put them somewhere they wonât fade into background noise, or to move them around or something (yes i know this can be like saying âtry to stop yourself from experiencing gravityâ but if thereâs any spot that things fade into the background less, itâs helpful to put your task there).
- donât be afraid to type one sentence or wash one dish and then go back to your distraction. thatâs one more sentence or dish than you would have gotten done otherwise.
- is there a way to âcheatâ or take a shortcut? do it. look yes, there are some shortcuts that will have negative consequences later, but there are also a lot of voices saying it doesnât count if you make something easier on yourself. eat off of paper plates if you donât have the energy to do the dishes, buy microwave meals so you donât have to cook - take as many shortcuts as you can find.
- any way you can make it fun or enjoyable is the best tool you have. even if itâs silly or makes it less efficient. pretending to be a character sometimes helps for me, singing or dancing while i work can help, hissing like a goblin at my email while I type it can help
- is there someone you can ask for head pats/a gold sticker/whatever when you did a thing and it was so hard and your brain is just not rewarding you for it?
Iâm not that great at following these, but they are the things that sometimes work for me.

Iâm surprised more people donât talk about making herb bundles out of mint, honestly. It has so many modern cultural associations with cleanliness, plus itâs a powerful grower. You literally have to pot it separately from everything else so it doesnât grow like a weed and overpower anything you plant it with. Doesnât that sound like it would make a great bundle to cleanse your house with, get everything feeling clean and absolutely bust up competing energies?
Whatâs Up, Witches!!
Yâall listen; These baby witches that attempted to hex the Moon, the Sun, and the Fae...these beautiful, magical things are OKAY! Theyâre too protected to be hexed or cursed (under normal circumstances) and they are fine. They ARE, however, fuming that these baby witches even tried. Itâs not the matter of they DID hex them, itâs the fact they had the DISRESPECT to even try! Thatâs why the Lunar and Solar deities, and even other deities, and the Fae (Dear goddesses the Faeâs wrath) are pissed about it! Itâs the shear DISRESPECT!
Pagan holidayâs are fun cus no one can figure out if they should preface their holiday greatings with âhappyâ âmerryâ or âblessedâ
@greed-the-dorkalicious youâre right and you should say it
BITCHINâ YULE TO ALL MY PAGAN FOLLOWERS
Six Ways to Meet Aphrodite
1. Strip naked and slather yourself with lotion that your skin is as smooth as marble carved into beauty by mortal hands
2. Walk through the wet sand on the edge of the sea and feel it beneath your feet and between your toes and be reborn like the goddess.
3. Fuck someone so well that the phrase âmaking loveâ vanishes from the folds of their memory and all they know is heat and the sweet feeling of tongue on tongue and flesh on flesh.
4. Walk the silent halls of a museum and see each aeonâs thought of beauty in marble and paint and plaster kept as icons in new temples for new ages.
5. Let hot water pour down your back and soak into your skin and scour away imperfect sorrow until all thatâs left is your soul laid bare.
6. Fall in love like youâre hitting concrete and know why a shattered city is a fair price for the gift of the Lady of Cythera.
Transitions between the Wheel (For the four seasons)
This is from my personal practice with observing the wheel of the year and my focus on each transition between the sabbats. I honor the current seasons in between. Each transition has itâs importance to self care and managing the home and garden. I will probably add to this later cause some paragraphs I wrote I feel like are a bit vague. Some of these transitions are not meant to be 100% literal and static but I feel like they are good areas to focus on for that moment in the year.
Yule->Imbolc Resting
During the thick of winter when itâs too cold to do anything and always dark, itâs the perfect moment in the year to rest. The focus is on relaxing, taking extra time to sleep and care for the body especially to not get sick. Winter is also âspaâ season because the air is so dry and harsh itâs a good time to soak in hot baths and scrub away dead skin and moisturize with protective lotion. Do not try to make new plans, yet sit home, rest and reflect.Â
Imbolc -> Ostara Cleansing
When winter thaws itâs a great time to clean the home and prepare for spring. Personally, I also like to do a body cleanse since I tend to eat a lot of processed (yet delicious ;-;) foods all year round. This also makes up for all the heavy foods Iâve been eating since Summer (all the BBQs) to Winter comfort foods. As I clean the home and get rid of stuff that has accumulated over the year, I clean the body. Also the focus is on cleaning the home as well. Breathing in the same air, especially if its full of dust, is really unhealthy and itâs good as the days are getting a little warmer to open up the windows for a few minutes to allow in fresh air to circulate. This is also the time of year I throw out old furniture, accumulated things and rearrange furniture in the room as well.
Ostara -> Beltane Sowing
Spring is a great time to germinate sprouts along with other seeds and clean the backyard or garden to grow plants. If you like to compost itâs a time to start mixing in the vegetable/fruit/plant scraps with the soil. Spring is also a great time to sow bigger changes in life as well. Something about the warm new season brings an air of flirtatiousness and âsocialnessâ that makes it perfect for making new friends or finding a partner. (Probably because people can finally come out of hibernation). Itâs also a fantastic time to work on your image and portfolio and apply for long term jobs that begin in the summer or fall. Spring is the season for new beginnings and putting long term plans into action.
Beltane -> Litha Growing
A tradition I like to do on Beltane is repotting of plants and gardening. Repotting plants is a tradition I try to focus on every year because itâs very easy for house plants to die due to dead soil. Plus it makes the inside of the house super vibrant and lively to have fresh new soil in pots. From this point to summer solstice is the point of growth. Growth in the garden but also growth of personal goals. May and June feel like hectic months where there are so many events and opportunities to advance your work or change your social scene, that if I am not personally progressing, I focus all of my attention on my growth.
Litha -> Lughnasadh Thriving
Its the heat of summer! Itâs time to get out and feel the intense hot energy and use its power to focus on goals and networking! Where I am thereâs usually an exciting event every week where itâs an opportunity to make more connections and meet more friends but also since its warm and nature is so vibrant itâs time to take some days to relax and get away to enjoy the heat and life of nature. Go to the beach, go hiking, swim in a lake, sleep under the stars. Be active since the efforts will pay off.Â
Lughnasadh -> Mabon Reaping
This is the time you earn what youâve sowed both literally and metaphorically. If you have a garden its the time it will start giving back. If you are an active goer of a farmers market you will notice how beautifully abundant the stands are. If in Spring youâve sent out tons of job applications, and in Summer got the job youâve wanted and worked hard, then by now you should start seeing some results. If there are no results being seen itâs a time for reflection and re-strategizing. There is a second chance in this time to start again before the cold and the holiday season bulldozes through.
Mabon -> Samhain Harvesting/Gathering
This is the time to gather and harvest. Usually family tends to gather now since itâs the holiday season. Thereâs not much other than gathering to be done since family and holidays are bombarding you from all sides. Also there is an abundance of food. This is great to store for the next transition which is
Samhain -> Yule Preparation
This is the moment to prepare for winter. My warddrobe completely changes here, I take up knitting projects that were abandoned last Imbolc, and I store food and herbs for the winter to use. Also making preserves from things in the garden or hand knitting clothes make great presents for the winter holidays. This is also a time to prepare the garden for hibernation. Take in potted plants, harvest the last of the herbs and food (that are not potted). Make sure plants you do not want to die have a place to chill in the house.
Not enough witchy attention gets paid to the time in between festivals. This post is gold.

ohhh i DEEPLY regret teaching my cat how to talk
Oh? Would you elaborate?
okay so one night like a week or two ago kurt was meowing at me and one of the meows sounded like he was saying âhewwoâ so since then I started saying âhewwoâ instead of meowing back at him (like I do with all his cat sounds, naturally) and slowly his meows evolved into something vaguely âhewwoâlike with the one or two True and Powerful Hewwoâs a day
but now that you have backstory I was just standing in my kitchen making rice, everythings dead silent, and suddenly this fucking âHEWWO??â echoes through the whole apartment and it almost killed me
I actually got in huge trouble with my fianceâs sister for that. One night, I heard Fish meowing and it kinda sounded like she was saying âhelloâ so I decided to encourage it. If no one was going to try to get the cat to stop screaming at 3am, I wanted to try to get her to scream words so everyone would be as disturbed about it as I was. For the better part of three years, I used treats to reward her whenever she âspokeâ while not letting anyone else know I was trying to teach her stuff.
One day, my fianceâs sister goes to give Fish a treat and the cat whiffs it. Misses the treat completely and it bounces under the fridge, so sheâs trying to stick her paw under to get it back.
âOh no, Fish. You lost your snack!â
âI know I know.â
Instant chaos. It wasnât even Fishâs best words. If she had only said it once, maybe no would have noticed, but the repetition got attention and everyone just lost it. I made the mistake of praising Fish and suddenly I have the sister turn on me. âAre you why she says âoh noâ all the time?â Apparently Fish rarely âmeowsâ properly anymore and will say âOh noâ whenever sheâs mildly inconvenienced and wants a human to fix it for her.
Itâs Important to Remember:
Not everyone views the Gods the same way.
Not everyone worships their Gods.
Many Pagans do not view all Gods as perfect or infallible. This is actually normal.
Not everyone has the same opinion or relationship with a God.
Not everyone views the Gods as their parent.
Some people have enough parents and are not interested in more.
Some people may have negative experiences with certain Gods and thatâs okay, it shouldnât affect *your* relationship with your God, and you shouldnât try to force/fix someone elseâs relationship with that deity.
Some see Gods like family, but with their own agenda. This is also valid.
Some people are married to their God. This is valid. Even Christianity has Godspousing. It is a thing. Donât disrespect it because you donât understand it.Â
Not everyone believes that all Gods are 100% tuned into what is your highest good. They are not equatable to the Christian Omniscient/Omnipotent God that knows what is best for all people.Â
Some people avoid certain Gods because they feel that God has their own agenda, which may be true.
Not all Gods may have your comfort and happiness as their priority. Some may act against this.
Not all Gods *like* humanity.
DO NOT PROJECT YOUR VIEW OF YOUR GOD ONTO OTHER PEOPLE.
DO NOT CONDEMN OTHERS THAT DO NOT SHARE THE SAME VIEW.
