Thank you for waiting so patiently for this, nonnie. <3 I still haven't gotten to Shinki's introduction in Boruto, but I didn't want to wait for this sweet request any longer.
I hope I did him justice for you.
Warnings: Themes of abandonment, nightmares, fluff.
You woke with a start. You sat up, blinking the sleep from your eyes as you tried to make sense of your surroundings.
And then you heard it. A wailing sound coming from the next room.
You didnât think. You just moved, racing from your bedroom to the room next door. As you opened the door, you were greeted by the sight of Shinki, curled tight around himself on the bed as he whimpered. Black sand swirled dangerously around him. You steeled yourself, then stepped forward, ignoring the stinging as the grains cut into you.
You picked Shinki up from the mattress and cradled him in your arms. He let out a noise of protest at the movement. Then his eyes opened. Immediately, the black sand fell into piles on the floor. âIâm sorry!â he said frantically, his eyes filling with tears. âI didnât mean it, Iâm sorry!â
âSshhh,â you soothed, rocking him gently. âItâs all right. Itâs over. You were just having a nightmare.â
He hesitated, then buried his face in your chest. âIâm sorry,â he choked.
âWhatever for?â you asked. âYou didnât do anything wrong.â
He sniffled as he tried to formulate his answer. âI still canât control it,â he said. âAnd you got hurt.â His eyes screwed shut. âAre you going to send me away?â
âWhat?â you gasped. âNo, never, Shinki.â
Tears flowed anew from Shinkiâs eyes as he clung to your shirt. âIn my dream, you didnât want me anymore,â he said. âLord Kazekage said I was a failure and not worthy to be part of his family.â
You squeezed him tightly. âThat is not true, none of it,â you said. âWe both want you here, and you are not a failure.â Your voice shook as you struggled to keep back tears of your own. âYou are our son, and we love you.â
A spark of hope appeared in Shinkiâs eyes, but it faded quickly, as if he didnât dare let himself believe it.
âYou know, my mother had a song she used to sing to me whenever I would have a nightmare,â you said. âMay I sing it for you?â
Shinki nodded and shifted in your arms.Â
You adjusted your grip, then gently rocked him as you started to sing:
âThe stars shine bright from the skies
The sun has said all its goodbyes
So rest your head and close your eyes
And sleep until morning
Iâll keep you safe all through the night
Let no nightmares within your sight
And keep your dreams all so bright
So sleep until morningâ
Gradually, Shinki grew heavy in your arms as the vibrations from your chest soothed him. His head fell back and his breathing grew slower. A small smile appeared on his face as he slipped back into slumber.
You gave him one more kiss on his forehead, then carefully tucked him back into bed. As you pulled the blankets around him, you glanced at the door with a smile. âYou can come in, you know,â you whispered.
The door pushed open, revealing Gaara. âI didnât want to interrupt,â he said, matching your quiet tone.
âI wouldnât have minded, and Iâm sure Shinki wouldnât either.â
âWhat happened?â Gaara asked as he walked to the other side of the bed.
âThe little one had a nightmare,â you replied as you stroked Shinkiâs head. âHe dreamed that we didnât want him around and that we were going to send him away.â
Sadness filled Gaaraâs eyes. He sank down onto the mattress, looking defeated. âShinki expressed as much during our training,â he said. âI thought I had assured him that wasnât the case.â
You stood up and walked around the bed to Gaara. You pulled his back against your chest and wrapped your arms around him. âHeâs just a child, and heâs been through a lot,â you said. âItâs going to take some time for him to feel truly safe here. All we can do is be here for him when he needs us.â
âI know,â Gaara said, leaning back against you. âI just canât help but wish I could do better.â He reached out a hand and carefully ran his fingers through Shinkiâs hair. His eyes widened as Shinki turned his head, nuzzling into Gaaraâs palm.
You pressed your hands against your mouth, suppressing the squeak building in your throat. Gaara mirrored your movement with his other hand, not daring to even breathe.
Once you had yourself under control, you squeezed Gaara tightly. âSee, youâre doing just fine.â
Tears began to form at the corners of his eyes as he smiled. âI guess youâre right,â he said.
âArenât I always?â you teased.
Gaara chuckled. âThank you for being there for him tonight,â he said. âIâm sorry I was so late getting home.â His expression turned thoughtful. âI think tomorrow Iâll see about taking some time off to spend with him.â
âThatâs a good idea,â you said. âAnd thereâs no need to thank me. Shinkiâs our son. Iâll always be there when he needs me.â
