I’ve been here for days The void is relentless, just a dull, faded blue in all directions I can’t see the clouds, I can’t see the water For some reason, the plane is empty No pilot, no passengers, no one but me There would be silence if not for the engines They surge against my ears, but even that’s a distant noise My seat is cold, the air conditioning is cold But I didn’t come prepared, so I have no blankets My one bag is empty, save for essentials I call for the flight assistants and try to change the temperature myself But of course, no one’s there Because the plane is empty except for me I wish I’d brought my headphones Or some kind of distraction, but I didn’t And there’s no point in wishing I did, because I wouldn’t know what to put on anyway So I’d have just sat there like an idiot with my headphones on and no music playing But at least no one would have to see, because all the isles are empty I didn’t bring them, though, so I have to look out the window again The dull, faded blue is everywhere, and I still can’t see the clouds All there is for me is the plane wing and its blinking lights I hate it, but it’s something, I suppose I know there’s water below us It feels too close, like I’ll drown on this plane because of a foolish pilot Though there is no pilot, so it’d have to be my fault somehow Because I couldn’t stand up and at least try to steer away Because I’d stay in my too-cold seat with no blanket and no music I’m too close to the water Yet the sun feels too low, wherever it is I’ll drown, I’ll burn I’d prefer the latter; it’s better than the sea, which is freezing And it’s probably a faster way to go All of the sudden, the engines feel louder It’s too much, it’s too much There’s nothing in the plane, they’re nothing around the plane There’s no one to notice as the wings start smoking Finally, something to look at The air conditioner turns hot, my seat turns hot I’d enjoy it but it’s too much I wanted warm, not hot Still, I don’t stand up, and I just watch from the window as the plane falls apart Because the puffs of smoke are better than the blue I feel something warm graze my arm For a moment, it’s nice, and I let it happen But the heat grows—because of course it does—and it becomes unbearable I still don’t look away from the window My breath leaves me like that Sitting back against my seat, staring at the smoking wing like an idiot It didn’t matter much to me, though Not at the time, and still not now Should someone find that plane—and I hope they do not— They should find my body unmoved Despite the fact that my seatbelt was left unbuckled They should also find the bodies of the passengers and pilot No seat would be empty, and they’d all have bags and headphones and blankets So I shall be the odd one out, the one without comfort or distraction Save for the smoking plane wing and the endless void that surrounded me Because, since I boarded, that was all I understood.
