Chapter Five.

December 24th, 2023. Late Afternoon. Dallas.

Margie’s brow creased as she focused her eyes on the sketchpad in her lap. She turned her pencil around and rubbed the eraser end at the lead on the page, erasing smudges and mistakes. Turning it back around, she focused again on her sketch.

Sketching had always been Margie’s saving grace. Whenever she was feeling strong emotions, she sketched. She had sketches from the night she and Joe first kissed. He’d slept in the guest room while he was visiting her, and that night, she’d sat awake in her bedroom, drawing anything she could, in hopes that she would tire herself of the excitement racing through her veins and eventually fall asleep.

She had sketches from the days following the births of her children. She had sketches from the night Joe proposed. She had sketches from several of the days that they fought, and from moments where her heart swelled with love. When Margie couldn’t paint, she could sketch. It was less stressful than painting was. She loved to paint, but sketching…sketching was easier.
