more cowboy oc's. the quick back lore is that Deacon and Matthew (Chaos's boy) are childhood friends and then some. Matthew left with his brother to join a gang and was hurt Deacon wouldn't uproot his nice life to go too. Eventually Deacon did though, and then Matthew decided to leave that gang (that in truth is awful) and set out on his own with his brother, expecting Deacon to follow yet again. Deacon didn't. And now here we are.

Matthew wondered if this was how Deacon felt every time Matthew was the one who walked away from him. Of course, Matthew never saw it as him leaving, he saw it as Deacon refusing to come with him. He shifted the blame onto Deacon, he acted as the injured party, letting it help him forget the hurt on Deacon’s face as Matthew left him behind. Once, twice.
And now time three. Time three, it was Deacon’s turn.
Word had made its way back to Matthew that Deacon was being held by a rival gang in hopes of some ransom, and Matthew couldn’t saddle up fast enough. His own gang tried to stop him, his own brother tried to stop him, but Matthew knew if he didn’t go, no one would. There were many reasons Matthew had left the gang that Deacon still called his, and their willingness to abandon their own and leave them to fend for themselves was a big part of it.
Matthew had rescued Deacon, had brought him back to their camp, had made Deacon feel welcome with his people, despite clashes that had happened in the past. He took care of Deacon, and once he was on the mend, Matthew brought up what he’d wanted to for a while, but what he was afraid to know the answer to.
He asked Deacon to stay.
No more sneaking around, or chance meetings, or getting only a couple days with each other at most a time. Deacon could stay with them--with him. “Stay,” Matthew said again, drawing Deacon in to kiss him, pouring everything into it he could. All his love, all his apologies for the times he hadn’t been able to do the same for Deacon in the past.
Deacon said it wasn’t that simple, and Matthew knew that, knew his past actions were a large reason for that. But Deacon also didn’t outright say no, Matthew thought he was really considering it this time.
So imagine his surprise when the next morning, his horse was gone, and so was Deacon.
