my sister is so annoying to watch Star Wars with, all she does is ask where Obi-Wan is, even when he's like, RIGHT THERE, ON SCREEN, GIRL.
Palpatine just gave Anakin his sith name and my sister said "And Obi-Wan?"
i WHEEZED. NSKJSNDFKJ I CAN'T SNDDSJ
She also asked where's Obi-Wan when Padmé and Anakin where hugging and making love eyes at each other. LMFAO
@kationella Star Wars Dir. George Lucas as per my sister's logic.
“Men like me don’t start the wars. We just die in them. We’ve always died in them, and we always will. We don’t expect any praise for it, no parades. No one knows our names. In fact, by your standards we have no names at all. We don’t have names. And no one will ever know who we are. But we do. We always do. We’re the Grand Army of the Republic.” The Cestus Deception by Steven Barnes.

Stolen from elsewhere.
trying to create a fanart gallery wall for my apartment. i love digital paintings that emulate a more traditional look through visible brush strokes and simplified details (but with a more vibrant colour scheme). i was also inspired by this amazing oil painting of mon by arthur gain—which i saw go on sale but couldn’t afford 🤠—so although i’m nowhere near that skilled, this was the best thing i could do!
Shmi in tpm always has dignity, and her agency is emphasized, it's noteworthy. She's still not a main character- she's a role and a messenger more than a person in some ways- but her words and her choices are given respect by both the narrative and the main characters. She conveys several of the central themes and messages of the movies- and the entire series, bookending Vader's eventual choice. When Anakin wants to race, she is the one one who's permission he needs. She and Qui Gon speak quite extensively about Anakin going to the temple, and it's only with her permission that he asks Anakin, and then it's only with her encouragement that agrees. She's constricted by the harshest of circumstances, but her choices are some of the most important of the movie.
And she has this dignity about her.
AotC's presentation of her feels absurd as a contrast. We receive our update about her from Watto, and by the way he tells it, things just happened to her. Our next update is a story of a kidnapping which is an homage to a racist caricature. She is tortured for no apparent reason, a brutal narrative tool to drive anakin to rage. She gets one single scene of her own, and can barely speak. Her death fuels her son to a fate we know she did not want for him. She has no choices and her words do nothing.
It's sort of remarkable to get these two stories back to back.
and then in RotS, Anakin's dreams about Padme are a crystal clear echo of the ones he had of Shmi. This trigger sets his downward spiral in motion, driving the climax of the trilogy. She is never mentioned at all. Anakin has no memory of her words, her lessons.

something something “I’m a person and my name is Anakin” showing his name is a central way he retains identity while a child slave vs “that name no longer has any meaning to me” in almost the same breath as “I must obey my master” thirty years later after Sidious accomplished what Gardulla and Watto never managed to: breaking his spirit and convincing him he has no other options but obedience, accepting painful consequences, never looking for a way out. something like that
lol what
Here's Obi-Wan in mando armor that I really felt like drawing but I certainly didn't feel like coloring or shading it comprehensively lol
Anyone else loves his beard but find it hard to draw? I do, and it somewhat stops me from drawing him more often, it's my greatest weakness ☠️

Sometimes media throws in a line that seems so ham-fisted that I recognize it as writers frantically trying to justify something, and nowhere is that more prevalent to me than character dynamics. It's like they seem to realize they didn't show enough reasons for a character to care about something so they work overtime for it. And the most glaringly obvious use of this to me is when Anakin calls Obi-Wan his father.
In AOTC one of the biggest complaints was that Anakin and Obi-Wan seemingly have no reason to like each other, and Anakin spends the entire film screaming how he hates him. This resulted in reshoots (like the elevator scene with Ewan's fake beard) to show that no, they do like each other. And the "you're the closest thing I have to a father" is so out of left field I never took it seriously. It's a fun space to play in, like what does fatherhood mean and look like to Anakin, but it's uh pretty obvious to me it was put in there to say "seeeeee they like each other lol! Everything's great :)"
All of this to say, it annoys me when that line is taken at face value and no one explores their dynamic beyond that. He's the daddy anakin is the son and that's it nothing more nothing less
@obiwancreampie exactly!!!! the shipping angle really throws people off. And even when I tell people that shipping obikin is a very recent development for me, no one cares. And you're right that it's like the Qui-Gon people, sometimes I feel like I'm watching different movies from people. Was Obi-Wan ever really a terrible master??? Or was Sidious just fucking amazing at grooming children?? Please engage with me on a deeper level I'm dying here
Anakin was still alive in Obi-Wan’s mind. Obi-Wan was engaged with him so intensely that he expected his apprentice to walk over one of those shifting sand dunes and grin at him again. Or scowl. He’d take anything. Any mood, any defiance. Just to see him again. Every day and every night he violated every principle the Jedi had taught him about staying in the present moment, about acceptance.
