They originally wanted Ford on the project because he's smart but because he's got bigger priorities (the portal + Bill), he refuses to go. Maybe if he was younger and more susceptible to people telling him what to do, he'd do it. But he needs to do something by himself and being on the petrova task force doesn't allow him to do that.

But the task force need him. Maybe it's a like a thing of some of the higher ups/people sponsoring the whole thing want Ford on the project, otherwise they won't give the go ahead/won't fully fund them (or something, I'm not sure). They'll wait years if they need to to have Ford.

However, other people aren't so patient (Stratt or whoever Stratt would be in this AU) and need Ford now so the project can get the funding it needs. Earth may not have that long. But Ford said no.

So they do their research and come across Ford's identical brother. If they can't get Ford... what about someone who looks exactly like him? The higher ups won't be able to tell the difference! If all they need is Ford then, well, here he is!

Stan is skeptical at first (pretending to be his smart, perfect brother that he hasn't spoken to in over a decade leaves a bad taste in his mouth) but once they offer a hefty compensation for his time, he's all on board.

He assumes Ford's identity, they teach him everything he needs to know science-wise in case anyone asks him to do something smart and no one is around to cover for him (and he does learn it) and the project gets their funding.

Then things get out of hand, the scientist on board the Hail Mary dies and they don't have a replacement scientist who knows enough to entrust them with the whole mission.

But they do have Stanley who has been on the project from the very beginning. Every inch of progress they made, Stan was there for it. He knows everything.

So they force Stan on the Hail Mary (or whatever she's called in this AU) and he's flung into space. Without telling his brother goodbye. And there isn't enough astrophage for a return journey.

When he wakes up, all of his belongings are addressed to a Dr Stanford F. Pines. He looks exactly like him. He doesn't remember anything. Introducing himself as 'Ford' doesn't seem right, no matter how much he tries to convince himself it's his name (he doesn't know why it feels wrong).

He calls himself Stan instead.
