I really didn't enjoy the Avatar Aang film, idk I've seen some of the negative criticisms and it's more about the juvenile writing and flanderization of other characters (which i do agree with) but Aang's writing in this film is genuinely frustrating. This doesn't really feel like the same character. And I feel like this conflict is not a very interesting one to give to Aang.

I think Aang's conflict works best when he's forced to challenge his own morals and integrity. pairing him up with an obviously evil villain and then making his final conflict be about being corrupted by a magic staff feels so... boring? So cheap? Aang is such a fantastic character because you can see him genuinely try to avoid easy solutions and work on being more kind and empathetic. Idk i really did not like this film

#he's my second favorite character so i was lowkey malding in a few scenes #like what do you mean tagah disrespects his wife and he has NOTHING to say about it??? idc how star struck he is #he wouldn't allow anyone to talk down to katara.#why do the writers think portraying aang as completely oblivious and narrow-minded as an adult makes him interesting #i also think this scale was just. a bit much #i would have been perfectly okay with a much smaller scale conflict. people love these characters dearly they'll watch them do ANYTHING #i feel like instead of the MCU-ass spirit battle we could have had a smaller scale story about Aang slowly rebuilding his culture #him finding the other air bison is weirdly treated as a small addition when it should be a VERY big deal #there's also other things i just didnt enjoy. like why are we still doing the 'non-benders are oppressed' shit #and why is it NEVER RESOLVED???????#like okay i get it. its to connect it to TLOK (which also handles it badly)#but im just supposed to believe aang just saw this conflict and for the next 60-70 years he never resolved it #more baffling given all this emphasis about how airbenders are keepers of the peace and aang does not--okay.#as im typing this i realize the film also could have used the non-bender oppression as a conflict #why was it so slapped on for plot #and listen i love redemption arcs but its weird that the girl who was a terrorist gets to have a happy ending with no consequences #< prev tags

there was a great study a few years that went into the whole "ppl online are bigger jerks than irl cuz theres a virtual wall and no repercussions" and the researchers were expecting to see that be the case but it turns out that people who were really angry or argumentative online were also found to just be assholes in person and people who were pretty patient and nice online were found to be patient and nice in real person as well

and it just debunked that whole cynical idea that people will naturally be mean if theres no punishment for it

Being able to draw older people as attractive without reducing or erasing the visual signs of aging, and in fact showing that they're attractive because of those signs, is an artistic skill that should be valued so much more. Honestly, it should earn you an immediate fortune because holy fuck is it a rare commodity. There are so many artists who seem to think attractiveness and aging exist in opposition to each other, so they smooth every wrinkle, erase every crease, and de-age the character until they're basically thirty with silver hair. But when an artist can look at crow's feet, smile lines, weathered skin, deep-set wrinkles, and all the little traces of a life well lived and say, "No, that's what makes them beautiful," that's a level of artistic observation and care I wish we celebrated more often.

it's okay to have thoughts that run counter to your values, and it's okay to have them in their entirety. let them run their course in private, in your head, in a diary, with a friend who understands this doesn't align with your core beliefs and is ready to talk through it with you.

it's not going to corrupt you. it's not going to somehow be psychically transmitted to the world at large. give yourself space to recognize that these are, in fact, your genuine thoughts and feelings, no matter how intensely uncomfortable that feels. recognize that you can let them be the dominant attitude in your mind for a few minutes without it affecting your behavior or compromising your integrity.

once you've gotten all of it out and seen the train of thought in its entirety, you can take a breath and step back to examine it from a distance. you can respond to it the way you would to a child who doesn't know better, non-judgmentally, trusting yourself to stay true to your pre-established values. and having processed it this way, you can feel closer to those values instead of feeling that tension between what you believe and the thoughts you refuse to acknowledge because they don't align with it.

"but prejudiced people aren't entitled to my empathy and education!" they are when they're you. it's non-negotiable that you have to live with you, therefore you are necessarily entitled to your own compassion.

"what would people think if they knew?" you don't have to tell anyone shit. your thoughts can be completely your own, and some of them should stay that way, but that doesn't mean they're evil to have, even if you hate the idea of acting on them. good news, you have free will and you don't have to act on them.

it's okay--good and healthy, in fact--to have pieces of yourself you wouldn't share online. no one can (or should have to) be 100% marketable and palatable inside and out 24/7. thoughts have no moral component. however, when pieces of our internal life are misaligned, it causes discomfort, and we can't address that discomfort if we don't acknowledge and examine it without judgment.
