scientific fact
Riga, Latvia
I thought Lydia had a urinary blockage, so we've been in the ER since 9:30 PM. Seven hours. Finally we get called into a room and they literally have no plan. The ER doc is quibbling with me about whether or not she has crystals or stones. Lady, I only know what I was told and I've been here for the better part of a shift.
It's supposed to be my first day back from vacation and given that I have only caught about an hour of sleep since I've been here I will have to call off. Assuming I can find a way to do that since I am stuck here without a way to email and a dying phone.
After a follow up with the primary care vet today, Lydia will very likely have to have her bladder stones surgically removed. We're looking at ~$1900, not including other follow up visits. I have already spent at least that much on her bladder issues already.
I love this cat, my dear friend of over a decade, so so much. I can't afford another $2k more in vet bills up front, even with pet insurance. Insurance that, on its own, is blowing up to $70/ month. Everything this year is more expensive. That's not an exaggeration even - my rent, all my premiums, food, phone bill. The only answer I can come up with is to start delivering food after work a few nights a week.
This beautiful cat is so full of life. She ain't ready to give up, so neither are we. If I have to go back to my roots (spiteful pizza delivery on a metaphorical empty tank) I'll do it for her. Of course I'll do it for her.
In 2019, I planned a trip to New Orleans that I had to cancel for dumb but necessary reasons. In 2021, I meant to go there on my honeymoon but let's be so for real that was not going to happen. Then, in 2026, a miracle happened.
I cannot stop thinking about every meal I had there. I slept under a drawing of Tennessee Williams. It was so hot I wanted to die and yet I was compelled to wander. I would absolutely go back. Without hesitation.

The 2026 Gender Census is now open!
[ survey.gendercensus.com ]
The 13th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 13th August 2026.
It’s short and easy, for most participants it takes 5 minutes or less.
After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.
If you think you might have friends and followers who’d be interested, please do reblog this blog post, and share the survey URL by email or at AFK social groups or on other social networks. Every share is extremely helpful!
Survey URL: https://survey.gendercensus.com
The survey is open to anyone anywhere who speaks English and feels that the gender binary doesn’t fully describe their experience of themselves and their gender(s) or lack thereof.
Thank you so much!

PS: You can see some regularly-updated statistics about incoming data here, with lots of demography and graphs to peruse!

YES PROBABILITY DOES NOT WORK THIS WAY, BUT LOOK: IN THIS CASE, IT JUST DID

After running a thousand errands, working hours of overtime, and being stuck in seemingly endless gridlock traffic commuting to and from their jobs, millions of Americans were disheartened to learn that it was, in fact, only Tuesday.
“Tuesday?” San Diego resident Doris Wagner said. “How in the hell is it still Tuesday?”
Tuesday’s arrival stunned a nation still recovering from the nightmarish slog that was Monday, leaving some to wonder if the week was ever going to end, and others to ask what was taking Saturday so goddamn long.
