benson, the kid in his trailer park, drawing stick figures in the sand during recess and telling him to guess a word and made this twisted little game of hangman. some kid comes stomping in it and instead of benson getting to react, it's daryl. and something in bensons little head tells him to calm the kid down the best he can. he's used to violence at home, but you know what else he was used to? soothing his mama after a particularly bad fight. he's always taken care of her even when she didn't appreciate it.

but back to daryl. daryl calms down with such ease by being distracted by everything the other kid threw at him. he was calm and walking back to class with benson mostly embarrassed for even acting out that way. the roles were reversed later that same week and for daryl, he didn't comfort anybody at home. marle, shockingly, was the one always doing the comforting. the man was a beacon of patience before the army destroyed who he was as a person. so, he did what he thought he was supposed to do and just distracted benson. benson, confused, gets more mad before he kinda realizes the effort. he appreciates it. it was then, mostly, where he learned to appreciate the little things.

benson and daryl, young as hell, aged 9-12, and throwing rocks off into the water. they're talking about their brothers and they both look up to their brothers wanting to be just like them (even if they both get into trouble or go to juvie) but they don't think they can ever measure up cause they're like heroes to the boys. they think of their older brothers like superheroes. so when bensons brother dies and he has no one he can even try to explain it to but daryl moved away right before high school and he was too fucking prideful to keep up with him.
