The 2017 DC Theatre Technician Cattle Call will be held on Sunday, April 9 and Monday, April 10 at Sidney Harman Hall from 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM. This is the Main venue for Shakespeare Theater Company in Gallery Place.

Sunday will be devoted to Carpenters, Electricians, Audio & Video Engineers, Props Artisans and Painters. 

Monday will be devoted to Costume Technicians, Makeup Artists, Stage Managers and those who fall into other categories but are on run crew for shows (Heeeey Equity day off!)

What is the cattle call? It’s an opportunity to sell your talents in front of a room of representatives looking to collect resumes and add people to their call lists. It’s an excellent opportunity if you want to enter the DC theater professional tech world and network very effectively. 

Similar to an acting cattle call, each candidate will be given 8 minutes in front of the group of representatives. Companies already committed to attending this year include:

Earlier today, Trump floated a “genius” edict about attempting to place a 20% tariff on all goods made in Mexico as a retaliation to the Mexican president cancelling his trip to meet with Trump ( https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/26/us/politics/mexico-wall-tax-trump.html?_r=0 ).  To many who think Mexican migrants are rapists and murderers, this may sound like a victory for the white supremacist in their hearts.  But to the rest of America, this means that we, the people, will bear the brunt of paying for this wall.

Aside from the basic economics that any tax is ultimately passed onto the consumer who pays for a product, it targets musicians and recording engineers in a very significant way.  How?

Because of this:

The Shure SM58. The “standard” in live sound microphones. It isn’t known for being the best sounding vocal mic, or the cheapest, or even the most expensive. It is known for being the most durable, consistent and affordable mic for live sound.  You can hammer a nail into a 2x4 and then pop it on a mic stand and perform a set. This, and it’s sibling the SM57 (found on snare drums and guitar cabs the world over) are the backbones of Shure’s audio lineup. Almost as iconic as the 55 Unidyne “Elvis” microphone.

And, since the 1990′s, they have been made in Mexico.

This tax that Trump proposes not only will raise the price of this microphone that literally is used by every stage in America, but it will raise the price the world over.  This microphone, which retails for around $100 in the US, is often MUCH more expensive in other countries. But in comparison to the competition, it is still a more affordable option for live sound. And, it’s durability make it the perfect choice for a long term investment. If the price rises 20-40%, many artists in developing countries will not be able to afford what is considered the “affordable standard” in microphones by US accounts. This will only further encourage purchase of inferior quality audio gear from other countries, drawing more dollars and pesos from North America, further weakening us and a nation that should be our ally.

This is more proof that Trump’s juvenile, short sighted attack on the trade between Mexico and the US in the name of racial discrimination will further stifle artists in this country, and further divide the two nations.  Music and art is arguably is the largest export of both Mexico and America. Nations the world over pay top dollar for Mexican music and telenovelas, and for American films and television.  Both nations share more than have in difference, and it is clear in our art.
