Robot Whump Blog

The reblog chain is one of the things that makes Tumblr unlike anywhere else. All the notes on reblogs are attributed to the original post, no matter which branch people actually liked or reblogged. We want to keep encouraging conversations, and give contributors the recognition they deserve. 

Soon, you'll be able to like, reblog, or reply to any part of a reblog chain, and that note will go to that reblog's author. Each reblog will have its own counts, instead of one aggregated number from every version of the post. And yes, you’ll be able to like multiple posts in one chain.

If a reblog doesn't add anything, the love flows up to the last person in the chain who did. Your post doesn't lose notes just because people spread it quietly.

Past notes will stay on the original post — we're only changing what happens from here on out. Retroactively re-attributing all of them would be... a lot.

But this. This changes the data architecture. This changes the SINGLE THING that makes tumblr the "... yes and" website. This KILLS THE COLLABORATIVE POSTING THAT MAKES THIS SITE DIFFERENT FROM ALL THE OTHER MEDIA PLATFORMS.

But it's necessary for me to have a roof over my head, even if it's mobile.

I need to purchase a cheap van or class c rv. It'll settle for a van, I can get a mattress for cheap and lay it down on the floor and maybe a military surplus winter sleeping bag. It's better than nothing at all, which is what I seem to be heading towards.

I'm looking for $5000. That will get me the vehicle, registration, gas (petrol, for my UK friends), the aforementioned mattress/sleeping bag, food, and space rent for a week or two when I get to where I'm going (power hookups so I can stay connected with y'all and bathrooms).

It's below freezing here, frequently below 0°F. If that wasn't bad enough, ICE is still doing their usual bullshit and have even begun deploying LRADs in the Twin Cities (Long Range Acoustic Devices, sonic weapons) as well as arresting anyone they don't like.

I'm trying to get to Washington state where my partner is. If I'm going to be homeless and living in a van/rv, I want to finally be able to be close enough to hold them.

There was a post going around a bit ago making fun of the word whump along the lines of, ‘just say you’re a sadist/masochist.’ And I’m not denying there isn’t some overlap in the community between whump and those kinks but…they don’t overlap like that for me. It’s hard to explain, but the feelings I get reading whump are not at all the feelings I get watching/participating in kink. I recognize that like kink it stems from the same dynamics (domination and control versus submission and acceptance) but most whump I read and write just doesn’t hit the same buttons as a similar kink scenario would for me. Personally I think I do enjoy the ‘aftercare’ aspect of whump more, which might contribute to the difference. A whipping scene in kink is sexy as hell but the aftercare of a fictional whipping scene has a ‘whumpy’ appeal that I don’t get out of kink experiences and scenes.

A different post that was also making the rounds said something along the lines of, ‘we need silly words like whump in fandom it keeps us humble,’ which isn’t incorrect - but I feel like whump as a concept can be divorced from fandom in a way that a lot of other ‘fandom terms’ can’t be. Whump is more akin to a genre with its own conventions and archetypes than it is to being an exclusively fandom-based phenomenon. There are ‘stock characters’ like there are in the romance or horror genres. There is no specific situation or setting tied to whump, like a fandom would have with established characters, but it has specific criteria (character is hurt and this is central to the story, the same way a mystery is central to a mystery genre story).

Whump isn’t synonymous with sadism/masochism, nor is it as simple as a fandom trope*. Whump is in my opinion a genre. Within whump there are consistent tropes, archetypes, and repeating themes, but whump itself is not a trope or fandom exclusive term. Like any genre, it can be kinky (romance threesomes, horror monster fucking, etc.) but reducing it to ‘just a kink’ is a disservice to its literary potential.**

Idk I just feel like there’s nuance between ‘it’s all kink’ and ‘it’s all silly fandom nonsense.’

*This is not shade at fandom tropes - they are useful and good, I just don’t think whump as a concept meets the criteria of being a fandom trope. Considering the whole breadth of whump to be a ‘trope’ puts the term in a very small box, and at the same time warps the definition of what a trope is and how it can be used.

If Hero is Villain's trophy, the power differential will be more overt. Villain is showing off their conquest and power by bringing Hero to heel. In the first variation of this (and also the og daydream that spawned this post) Hero is basically treated like a showy pet: kept by Villain's side all the time and obviously beneath them, but also kind of pampered and Villain won't let any henchmen be very mean to Hero. In the other variation, it's less pet-whumpy and more blatantly abusive, with Villain physically hurting Hero whenever they feel like it.

If Villain is Hero's trophy, first off I'm thinking Villain will be given to them brainwashed instead of Hero brainwashing them themself. But second off, there will be a layer of sort of hiding or softening the power differential and how messed up this really is, because these are the "good guys" and want to keep that image. One version of this is with Hero as more of a Caretaker type, who's horrified to receive Villain like this but can't really do anything about it. And the last variation is that Hero's happy to go along with this (but with less dehumanization than there would be with the roles reversed.)

Before Whumpee could turn around, the person hit them over the head, knocking them out cold.

Nah cuz its not sexual for me and also I don't get the same feeling from real people or irl acts of violence. Also mostly I enjoy “whumperless whump/environmental whump” so like sickfics or car crashes or caretaking and such. So…..

I'm taking this ask in good faith but just so you know its not very nice to label people (especially minors, which I am) as being sadists (not that there’s anything wrong with s&m itself).
