Absolutely mind blown about my bsf drawing us as Qiflings and he says that I would have the silverwood curse or as we put it "tree cancer" BUT HE HASN'T FINISHED THE MANGA SO HE DOESN'T KNOW THE FULL CONTEXT
destined to a life of misery ig!!
One day I really want to write a long analysis of WHA clothing and how Shirahama just gets it on so many different levels. But now I just wanted to share one thought.
How an outfit of an apprentice represents their teacher.
1. The girls' outfits look like they are meant for children who like to play in a garden, get dirty and are very active. It really shows how Qifrey views a proper childhood. They are shorter, made out of less fancy looking but probably more durable material.
Euini's outfit doesn't look very comfy, nor like it's meant for a child. It looks like he is supposed to be still, focus on study and represent Kukrow well among other witches in the Great Hall.
2. Qifrey's apprentices are not just little copies of him. Yes, he made sure that this familiar teacher-apprentice bond, that is so important to witches, is visible in their clothing. What's more, the blue capes not only reference Qifrey, but also other members of his "witch family" - Olruggio and Beldaruit. Still, they are not just small copies, his students are his own people.
On the other hand, Kukrow made out of Euini his little and less fancy copy.
I love the fact that its BRIMS that signal rebellion in wha.
Brims on any hat is a practical measure to keep the sun out of your eyes. Specifically it is intended to keep the sun out of your eyes while you WORK.
Brimmed hats are the mark of working class people who need protection from the elements. A brim is symbolic of determination, hard work and practicality.
Meanwhile brimless caps are associated with status, royalty and power. The caps of old royalty signaled luxury in its impracticality. It showed hierarchy and rank. In fact the higher the cap the higher the rank and wealth.
Making a brimmed cap a reason to erase a witches memory for no other reason than because it is brimmed makes the lives of witches that work outside much harder. Witches with less wealth would imidiately be targeted. A brim is a tool. Assigning it political value makes the demographic it is useful to instantly political. It is a silent form of discrimination that is consistent with history.
The brimmed caps might have originally been an oppressed class if they aren't now.

So the evidence implying Qifrey and Olruggio are romantically interested in each other is pretty well documented (myths, tassels, the entirety of witchen) but, I haven't seen as much about the scene that really seals for me that Qifrey wants to fuck Olruggio.
What happens literally is that we cut from baby Qifrey reaching for Olruggio and transforming, to adult Qifrey with his hand fisted in his lap, determinedly not reaching for Olruggio. And then he gets up and goes to stand in a lake and trigger his own PTSD to get the silverwood under control.
What happens symbolically is a guy thinks really hard about another guy, gets wood experiences an uncontrollable throbbing growth which fills him with horror and shame, and then he goes and stands in cold water until he can get it under control.
Completely insane scene construction. Yes, I know how the silverwood's growth is literally triggered, but sometimes a train going into a tunnel is the public transport system working as intended, and sometimes it's self-conscious Freudian symbolism.
Sometimes an evil parasite is an evil parasite, but sometimes it's also getting rock hard for your best friend.
First artwork I'm posting here :p
OH SHE'S SO CUTEE
Do u think Olruggio is a bit of an alcoholic because blacking out and not remembering the night is a sensation he subconsciously seeks from Qifrey erasing his memories?
migraine today...

“To be anyone else” - Euini is definitely one of my favorite characters from Witch Hat Atelier and I can’t wait to see more of his story one day.
euini gets his little bangs too !
I've been thinking about clothing in wha, more specifically the narrow focus of Luluci. (because when am I not thinking about her)
She's easily the most overtly connected to themes of sexual assault/agency over ones body. Though the theme itself is deeply woven into a stupidly large amount of scenes in the manga. See to drawing seals on peoples bodies, the scene where Sasaran has Agott (sickening btw), and the weight of memory erasure spells.
But.
It's not lost on me that of all known apprentice outfits Luluci's is the most revealing. Stay with me now.
Her apprentices wardrobe is composed of loose silken textures, exposed shoulders/arms, and light pastel colors.
It's fairly exposed in comparison to other outfits seen in the manga. The girls in Qifrey's atelier and Jujy are fully covered head to toe. Even Ininia who is aligned with the brimmed caps is still fully covered. It's also good to note that the intent of witches robes are to obfuscate non-witches view of them casting. And though Luluci's outfit could achieve that goal it would be relatively difficult too. Again, the other girls outfits mentioned are composed of weighty materials that would be harder to move in harsh weather climates-and their outfits are more apt for said enviornments-while Luluci's movements could exposed by a light breeze.
Now on to why I think Luluci's apprentice outfit is the way it is. There's two reasons. Her own masters bias and how little childrens(!) agency is valued in witch society. Master's design their apprentices outfits, and it seems that Luluci's master let his perversion of women guide his design. Exposed skin and a belt meant to tighten up the silhouette.
The revealing nature of his apprentices clothes also gives them nowhere to hide in times of stress. Time and time again in the manga characters like Coco, Tetia, and Euini curl into their outfits to hold onto a sense of safety.
Luluci doesn't get to have that. She's exposed to world, and with the way her master treats her, it's on purpose.
They're given to this man like a product.
It's so well done on Shirahama's part to execute Luluci's belief in the knights moralis not just through the explicit content of her backstory, but the implied context as well. The way she's dressed sticks out sorely against almost all other characters we know at this point.
ITS SO GOOD I'M ACTUALLY GOING CRAZY.
love her forever and ever actually
In honor of the wha anime (and me writing Orufrey fanfic) I've started rereading the manga and holy shit it's so good. like so good it makes me sick.
So now I gotta shitpost about every aspect of it I love and ofc I'm starting with the knights moralis bc (to reiterate) holy shit they're so interesting.
EVEN JUST THE DESIGN OF THEIR CAPS. like forgive me if anyones pointed this out before and I'm just stupid but the design of the caps is so fascinating. Like it's noted throughout pretty much the entire manga that the presence of a brim or anything that obscures someones vision of a witches face is bad. BUT the knights moralis have the visors-for lack of a better term-on their caps. And it's not just a personal choice for a handful of them, it's standard, it's uniform. The visors already look like they can obscure the vision of the witch wearing the moralis caps, but more than that if they were to slip even an inch everyone else would be blind to the witch wearing the hat. I also think it's worth noting that the visors would blind the knight, it's not the case of a brim (typically) the witch could see through them. It's like a one way/two way mirror situation.
The knights are blind to justice, or in Easthies case blinded by justice.
The visual storytelling is actually a work of art because before we're introduced to the knights motivations (like Luluci) we're shown how the presence of the knights is like slapping a bandaid on a bullet wound. Like it's no coincidence that the knights aren't presented as a strictly good entity visually, nor a fully bad one. They're representative of the systems they uphold (the blinding capacity of their caps) and the people that make up the system (Luluci, Galga, etc) and how there's no full goodness to their presence or even their name.
I have so much to say on this, but am not good enough to articulate it rn so...
