This is another info graphic I did advocating for snakes. When spring comes around snakes start to come out of hibernation and sometimes will end up in people’s backyards. Snakes around this time are killed left and right, whether it is completely harmless or venomous. I want to urge people to learn about snakes and also to leave snakes alone!

How to Pet Snakes: A Fixed Version of this post.
Disclaimer: Your mileage may vary, this is based off of my animals. Some individuals may not like their heads being touched, others may allow it!!
Sketches of various constrictor profiles, attempting to help illustrate that these snakes don’t just vary in color and size, but there’s tons of variation even down to facial structure. This was a fun exercise~

hello, my mother has finally given me permission to buy a pet snake, my problem is that she refuses to feed it, even with frozen mice. Since I am studying archaeology I sometimes am away from home for 2-3 weeks at a time. Could you recommend a begginer snake that would not mind a bit of travel? (once I arrive at the base camp I would not move it again until the term is over)
I sympathize in re: reluctant parents. My mother is severely phobic of snakes, so I can't have one as long as I'm living at home.
Unfortunately, snakes aren't really meant for travel. I honestly would not recommend getting any sort of reptile if you're going to be moving back and forth, even infrequently -- because they've got very specific heating and humidity requirements, maintaining those while moving would be difficult and likely put a lot of stress on the animal.
Maybe you can try connecting with local herp groups and making a friend who could feed your snake while you're away? Otherwise, I can't in good conscience recommend you keeping a snake right now.
/post/31726056090/ for heavens sake, do tis freaking person know that snake's king eat other snake ?!
You're right! The majority of snakes should not be kept in enclosures together as many will kill and eat other snakes. The exceptions to this rule are very rare -- garter snakes are the only captive species to come to mind immediately.
But in this case -- we're talking about the picture of the ball python and milk snake, yes? -- it looks like the owner of the animals just had them out together for a photograph. It's unlikely that the animals are kept together as 1. they have different care requirements, and 2. it would be dangerous for both animals. They're on separate hands and the owner is clearly supervising them. I wouldn't suggest doing this for prolonged periods of time, and never leave them alone together, but in this particular case I don't think that the owner is mistreating, neglecting, or endangering his/her animals. It really looks like they're just out for a photo.
But yes -- never cohabitate your snakes. It's dangerous, it goes against the snake's natural instincts, and ultimately it may end in the loss of one or both of your pets.
