He is paid absolutely bonkers amounts of money to watch a team play for five minutes and immediately diagnose what’s wrong with them. He is always right.

Ok 5 minutes is probably an exaggeration. The coaches send him a bunch of tape to review in advance. They probably focus on their best players or the ones they think need the most improvement, but half the time Shane requests more, focusing on players they hadn’t paid much attention to before. Then one day at practice, the players look up into the stands and are filled with awe, terror, and wonder, because Shane Hollander is sitting there staring directly at them with a scarily thoughtful look on his face.

He meets with the coaches and gm and reports his conclusions. Who to trade and for who , how to get better results from certain players, how to run power plays and penalty kills, changes in line makeups.

Some lucky players get to meet with him. He takes about five minutes to list off or demonstrate everything they need to do to stop sucking. He has no time for chit chat or hero worship. Focus, listen, learn, and do exactly what he says and you will be good. Fail to do what he says and you will shame your entire bloodline.

Like, in a sense, I get it. Bobby was more than a friend to Buck, he was his adoptive Dad. And yes, Buck is the one whose grief has actually been ignored/belittled by some characters (which is simply not true for Hen--in fact, it's explicitly stated that at least Buck obsessively asked everyone how they were doing, including her. And I'm pretty sure there are scenes with other characters supporting her that I'm just not remembering off the top of my head). But like... guys. Athena is right there.

Bobby was her husband, soulmate, the love of her life. Yes, the show has done the best job addressing her grief out of everyone, so no, her giving Hen's speech wouldn't make sense--but that's the thing. It was a dumb ass speech. No one should have given it, even Buck. Because the belittling/ignoring of his grief seems to have mostly been an issue between him and Eddie, not the rest of the characters--and therefore should be solved between him and Eddie (which the show has clearly decided it already did with the shitty not-apology but I digress. It had nothing to do with the fire fam at large).

But back to my point, Athena having to hear her supposed best friend say all of that bullshit, all of which is just straight up lies... let my girl snap back!!! Please let her verbally smack some sense into Hen fr 😭 This is not the time for Buck, and Hen frankly would not listen to him regardless of if he's speaking sense lmao. But Athena? She would listen to Athena.

You are trying to explain the trajectory of research on trans issues, and how the informed consent model came about as a wildly successful alternative to the gatekeeping model because time and again, people with clinical experience who actually cared about their patients found that just letting trans people transition was easier and the fear that it would lead to something bad was unfounded.

The Principle Understander is shouting at you that the medicalization of trans people is inherently unjust, and even the informed consent provider is still a gatekeeper, just a more lenient one.
