MY HOME IS ON THE LIST/LIKELY TO BE TARGETED, WHAT CAN I DO?

* it may bring you peace of mind to have a go-bag ready, just in case. A go-bag is a bag with everything in it that you need to get out a volatile situation quickly. Any bag that can be secured (buttoned or zipped) will do. In your go-bag, you should include;

- identifying documents; passport/driver’s license/asylum card/ILR certificate/British Residency permit card

- Wallet and/or banking books

- A spare charger & cable and/or a power bank

- any shelf-stable medication (tablets, inhalers etc.) if you are on medication that needs to be refrigerated, leave it in the fridge until you have to leave

- Sanitary items; toothbrush, toothpaste, sanitary pads & tampons, deodorant. If you have very young children with you, you may also want to take your nappy bag.

* If you have to leave, a go-bag is a convenient way to ensure you have everything of importance with you.

* If you are being supported by an asylum seekers or refugee charity, or are a member of a gurdwara/temple, mosque, synagogue or church, reach out to your religious leaders. They may be able to provide direct support, or put you in contact with organisations or other congregants who can help. If you are friendly with your neighbours, it may be worth contacting them too.

* IN THE EVENT THAT “PROTESTORS” DO COME TO YOUR HOUSE, CALL 999 IMMEDIATELY, AND FOLLOW ANY INSTRUCTIONS THEY GIVE YOU. MOVE AWAY FROM ANY WINDOWS. DO NOT OPEN YOUR DOOR UNLESS INSTRUCTED TO DO SO BY EMERGENCY SERVICES.

I’M AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT/CARE WORKER/NHS WORKER, WHAT SHOULD I DO?

* Contact your student welfare office/NHS Trust/agency for advice, support and referral to organisations that may be able to provide assistance

* if you live in or commute through an area that is likely to be targeted, contact your lecturers and your faculty to find out whether remote study is possible; if you work in care or as part of the NHS, find out if it is possible to change shifts.

* If it would provide peace of mind, prepare a go-bag as listed above

* Reach out to your the uni society or student’s organisation for international students or students of specific ethnic origin; they may be able to provide you with direction to resources and peer support. If your university has a Marxist or Socialist society, reach out to them for mutual aid with a travel buddy etc., for getting to and from your place of study/work

* If you are a member of a gurdwara/temple, mosque, synagogue or church, reach out to your religious leaders. They may be able to provide direct support, or put you in contact with organisations or other congregants who can help.

* If you are friendly with your neighbours, it may be worth contacting them too for assistance with travel to & from work.

* Report any racism or racialised violence you are subjected to. NHS staff have a right to refuse to treat patients who harass, abuse, threaten or insult them; if a patient is racist to you, where possible, ask another member of staff to take over their care.

PERSONAL SAFETY:

* do not leave your home unless strictly necessary. If it is necessary to leave, don’t do it alone.

* use NextDoor, WhatsApp, social media and word of mouth to avoid commuting through “protestor” road blocks, areas of active conflict etc.,

* When travelling, use Share My Location or Life360, and keep at least two people aware of your expected time of arrival at your destination with instructions to contact the police if you do not let them know you’ve made it safely

* do not directly confront any individuals involved, or allow them to bait you into becoming confrontational

* only record if it is safe. Do not record individuals directly/from up close

* Do not directly intervene. If you see violence occurring, contact emergency services and if safe to do so, record what’s happening.

ALLYSHIP & HOW TO HELP:

* if you have neighbours, friends, coworkers or acquaintances form targeted communities, reach out to them. Ask them what you can do to help them feel safe.

* If you live in an area likely to be targeted, reach out to any vulnerable people you know. If safe and possible, offer to let them shelter with you in the event they need to leave home

* If you see any incitement to violence online screenshot it; it may prove useful in the event of individual “protesters” being prosecuted

* If you see any specific areas being discussed as targets, alert anyone you know at risk in the area

* Reach out to local refugee & asylum seekers’ organisations, to organisations supporting foreign national care & healthcare workers, and to churches, mosques, gurdwaras; they may be looking for short term assistance in helping to provide for vulnerable members of their community

1. Have proof they're a teenager first. More than just a picture, have a video call with them.

2. If you want to meet up with them, have your parents or a trusted adult come with you. Even if they are a proven teenager, its still good to have supervision in case any issues happen.

3. If you are talking to an adult, and they start being sexual in any way, you run the fuck away. It doesn't matter if they're 40 or 20. An adult inherently has a power dynamic that teenagers do not. And its up to the adult to act responsible about it. There's exceptions of course, if you're 16 and dating an 18 year old, that's not a problem, we're not talking about that.

4. Being in a server with adults or ran by adults is not inherently bad. Talking to adults is not inherently a problem, and will likely happen in any number of Discord servers. It is only an issue when they are acting sexual and show predatory behavior.

5. Look out for grooming behavior. It can be difficult, because at first it seems like innocuous behavior, like complimenting or giving gifts. Especially if you feel lonely and have low self esteem. And groomers actively target people like that.

If they start trying to isolate you, talk sexual with you, state they depend on you for emotional needs, blame you for their own actions, try to be secretive about the relationship- Then you need to talk to people you trust, block the perpetrator, and call the police on them.

But what about a Simon that is so damn tired. Simon who wakes up on the Hail Mary and just. Lets it all happen. Accepts it.

There's another human named Ryland who swears he won't hurt him? That's awful nice of him. There's a strange, mouthy alien named Rocky? Well the name certainly fits, and he's much kinder than the last alien Simon met. Ryland wants to know his last name? He must be important enough for one now, and hey, Rocky's recommendation of Fisher is pretty funny and ironic, so sure. Earth is still alive, the stars are being saved, and he never has to worry about Eden or the COI ever again? He just wishes his mom could hear all this good news.

He's happy. Tends to his plants in the corner of Mary he claims for himself. Goes out on space walks with Ryland every so often. Teaches the little guy in his ball of xenon to swear for once. Even gets to see the beauty of Rocky's ship. He's safe, and happy, and okay. Finally.

But Ryland swears there's a sorrow in his eyes still. Simon's smiles don't go all the way through his face, and Ryland's caught him going extra still during zero gravity moments and just. Staring out the window at the stars.

So just in case, Ryland spends every second he can spare making sure Simon knows this is real. That he's really free, and safe. It's a sensory journey, of touch and sight and sound. Ryland shows him Earth life and movies in the screen room, plays him music and learns Eridian sonnets to duet with Rocky, makes sure Simon is even more careful and attentive of his plants.

It eventually evolves into their sleep, cuddling and gentle touches and whispers of reassurance through all the darkness the (relative) night invites. And Ryland - selfish selfish selfish - even develops a feeling of intimacy and affection for Simon, and his need for him to understand only grows tenfold.

But Ryland never sees it happen. He never gets a spark to ignite in Simon's dull eyes. But his heart still beats, his touch is still gentle, and he stays. He lives. And for both of them, that's plenty.

It isn't until they save Rocky from the taumoeba, agree to go to Erid instead of Earth, and the biodome is complete and safe, does it finally hit.

It's their self imposed weekend, and Grace's day off. They're cleaning the house together. The gentle sway of monotony settles comfortably over them both, just like it has every other Eridian weekend prior.

But suddenly, Ryland can't hear Simon anymore. He calls out, gets no response. He didn't hear the door open or close, so he's still in the house. Just inexplicably quiet.

Ryland panics a little, rushing to the last place he remembers seeing him...

And finds Simon leaning heavily on the kitchen sink, water running and his breathing heavy. He's shaking, and the cup in his hand threatens to join its dirty brethren.

Carefully, Ryland walks over to him. Tries not to startle Simon as he removes the glass from his hand and turns off the water.

But Simon still whips his head around to look at Ryland. And when they lock eyes, Simon is in tears, a combination of grief, sorrow, and unending relief warring with the scared furrow of his brow and hopeful twinge of a smile.

"I'm alive..." he whimpers, and shatters Ryland's heart. "This... isn't heaven...? It's real...?"

And Ryland falls apart, pulling Simon into a tight embrace. Melting into the frantic returning curl of Simon's arm around him, pressing into the body against him and letting that hand curl tightly into his shirt. Whispers reassurances and confirmations and the gentle truth over and over and over, just as he's been doing the past few months, no less true.

"You chose me..." Simon whispers into Ryland's shoulder, right by his ear. It's full of every emotion Ryland has had to stomp down since they arose. "You did all this on purpose- Why?"

He has to look at him. Ryland pulls back to take Simon's face in his hands, look him eye to eye, through all the tears and shaking and whimpering. And he announces, with every ounce of love he's had to hold back, "Because it was you. Because you deserved everything."

What is heaven, if not everything that's too good to be true being both? And what is life, if not heaven given breath and a beating heart?

The flickering sparks in Simon's eyes falter. "That- that was enough?" he chokes out.

Ryland just presses their foreheads together, cradling Simon's head, heart, life in his palms, and declares without a single doubt, "It was all you ever needed."

The spark becomes an inferno, and they fall into each other's arms. Happy tears, a weightless relief, and the final piece of peace slotting into place.
